Cableless GPU power connectors targeting over 600W specs leaked

Recommended Posts

When Asus demonstrated a GeForce RTX 4070 utilizing the new system at Computex and the Bilibili World 2023 exhibition, observers reported that it could deliver up to 600W. That wattage is enough for the flagship 4090 at stock settings, but overclocking and future high-end GPUs could exceed 600W. However, designers appear to have revised that spec to deliver no less than 600W to meet the demands of high-end graphics cards, with no upper limit stated.

Is that a dedicated 12pin SLOT for power?  As in it'll slot in just like the PCIe slot?  If THAT became standard instead of the stupid plug and cable you can't bend to fit your GPU in with the side panel on, I'm all for it!  To be honest, I kinda prefer mid-range cards for their aesthetics for the very reason they don't have a bunch of 6 or 8pin cables connected to it.

Wouldn't be proprietary if it became an adopted standard though.  🙂

All this does is move where you plug in the power, and remove (plug-n-play) backwards compatibility. Even as a standard, this would effectively separate "HEDT" and "Desktop" GPUs into entirely separate branches. Where, a 'HEDT card' isn't compatible with any 'value-oriented' boards.

That sounds like a wetdream for AMD/Intel/nVidia and their partners but, a nightmare for Small-SIs and DIYers.

No Thank You.

OTOH, I'd be more than on board for -12V_N_+12V "Split Rail" 24VDC becoming 'a thing' for PSUs and GPUs.

Basically, (If you've done any home electrical work in US/CAN) just think of the GPU as an Electric Range, Dryer, or Water Heater.
