Welcome to the ExtremeHW 7-day Folding Competition, January 24th-31st 1200 *UTC*

Start Time: January 24th 12:00 UTC

End Time: January 31st 11:59 UTC

Countdown to Event Start

Countdown to Event Stop

^^CLICK THOSE IF YOU LIVE SOMEWHERE NOT UTC TIME ZONE^^

How to participate:

During the competition you must be folding for Team 239902

Stats: You can view the stats for the foldathon here: https://ehwfoldingstats.lazypenguin.com

Prizes: p.m. @damric or @firedfly if you have something suitable to give away*

 tbd

Folding Time Prizes:

 tbd

Excluded from Prizes:

tbd

Mind the EVENT START TIMER as it is UTC time zone.

Note: Stats are updated as soon as possible, but less frequent than desired. Just keep folding!

Note: Extreme Team Members remember to use a different pass key than your ETF key (If you don't know what that is then it probably does not apply to you).

Folding is stressful on hardware, and will often break an overclock unless it's been tested with folding. I do not recommend overclocking high end GPUs as the power draw can be extreme while folding. If anything, try tuning for energy efficiency. Casualties happen and EXTREMEHW can not be held accountable if you destroy your hardware while folding.

Thank you for your participation!

[H]ardForum has invited us to their annual foldathon. So instead of our normally scheduled 3-day in January, it is now a 7-day competition for forum bragging rights.

https://hardforum.com/threads/annual-h-vs-taat-folding-home-bigadv-eol-5th-anniversary-challenge.2032553/

Official Score Card:

https://hardforum.com/threads/2024-5th-bigadv-eol-challenge-results.2032988/

- We still fold with our Team Number 239902.

- I know 7 days is a lot, so do what you can. At least it is winter for most people!

- If this works out, this opens the door to future cooperation and competitions between other forums.

Thanks @firedfly for the ideas and being liaison for this.

EDIT: I fold 24/7 already anyway. Should be able to do 7 days no problem EXCEPT that my wife's 3060 might not be available as she'll be working. I'll run it as much as possible but it will probably need to be shut off while she's working.

As far as I know, we don't have to sign up over there. We're getting clarification though.

No need to sign up over there.  I signed the team up and the competition is between teams instead of individuals.  We'll be keeping our team's individual stats as usual during this.

I'm not sure how they'll be posting updates during the competition, but I'll attempt to replicate that information here.

This is pututu from [H]ard|OCP team. Just registered here. Looking forward for this upcoming friendly competition once a year. This year will be exciting as we have 5 teams participating. In the previous four, it was just [H] vs TAAT but we decided to invite a few more teams and see how it goes this year. It's only 7-day event, once a year but I hope we all can have fun poking at other teams and some trash talks. Get more folders on board and see which team can come up on top.🏋️‍♂️

It's a good time to introduce new members to folding@home or wake up some sleepy folders once a year. Just spread the word around.

In case why this is called BigAdv EOL challenge, I think most of you know what it is. It just happened that FAH BigAdv program ended on Jan 31st. It has good and mostly bad memories/experiences for some very long time folders but it is just a date that happens to be associated with FAH.

Welcome to EHW, and thanks for the why's behind the BigAdv EOL challenge 🙂

For the uninformed--also see: Big Advanced, which details what sort of work units they were.

Premium Platinum - Lifetime

Yeah back in 2012 people were running -bigadv on 2600k at 5GHz and just barely completing them in time, but they were doing a few hundred thousand points daily if I recall, and millions a month. It was by far the best way to make a ton of points.

This was before GPU folding was lucrative at all for points - I remember folding on an HD 6870 and doing 8000 ppd, for an entire year 24/7, and I got a badge for it on OCN.

[H] had a "4p Mafia" back then churning out points.  Quad g34 opteron systems (48 cores total initially). I believe each of these beasts would get 400-600k PPD in 2011-12.  Someone (tear) on the forums even modded the bios for several supermicro boards to allow for some overclocking.

An old PSU failed, and took a lot of hardware with it. Don't buy cheap PSUs, OVP is a good thing! I got another card back online yesterday and hope to be back to full folding power by the time this starts tomorrow night. It just depends on parts arriving on time and the final troubleshooting to finalize what's actually broken.

The whole process has actually been pretty interesting with parts stacked up to be swapped and tested. Turns out a fried SSD can make a system *almost* but not quite POST by looking like a memory or CPU problem in BIOS. Tricksy!
