Choosing A New NVMe Cooler

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So I will soon be undertaking a review of Corsairs new MP700 SE Pro.

However on this occasion the NVMe in question does not come with a heatsink solution and will be a bare PCB. I could use the motherboard integrated heatsink, but where is the fun in that! So I am in the market of looking for a cooler to be used in the review. After a quick look I found a few contenders, as below. What are your thoughts on the below coolers? Feel free to recommend others 🙂

Whatever you choose, please also test it, as is (in this case no heatsink), and also with just the motherboard heat sink.

They do have water coolers too lol. I'm sure AIO is also around the corner.

Those seem kinda ridiculous. I think I'll just stick with Gen 3 or 4 drives for now.

To me, having heatsinks with little fans on them that are that big is approaching the realm of absurdity with how I would want to approach on-board storage.

I do know the Thermalright NVMe cooler you have listed comes well recommended. If I was to get one I'd probably go with the fanless model and point a fan at it myself though.

Something like this could be a good performing solution if you have the room available for it.

I will say that I have this little guy cooler and it seems to do the job on my roasty toasty WD SN750 drive. In my case my low budget motherboard didn't come with an NVMe heatsink.

I have not fully decided on testing parameters just yet but if I were to test multiple scenarios, it would be bare PCB and Aftermarket.

Some of them are for sure and some of the less "Crazy" coolers are still sufficient. However until a time where running temps of newer gen drives can be tempered by other means, the need for more extravagant coolers will grow. Just imagine Gen 6 and 7 lol.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did see that one but wondered if it would interfere with a cooling fan I have aimed at my RAM. My M.2 slot for Gen 5 speeds is next to my RAM.

I'm a fan of Thermalright. I'd go with a fanless and rely on case airflow. Those puny little fans on the others will either move almost zero air, or make a ton of noise. That Gen 5 slot placement on your Ace is really nice since it would be in the path of intake airflow on most cases, and a RAM fan would also get some air on it.

Not an issue with your setup, but an issue I see with a lot of motherboards is that they put the only gen5 slot right above the primary 16x slot where people stuff a huge GPU... So those m.2 coolers with the side fan would be pressed right against the backplate of the GPU in a lot of builds. In that regard, the Graugear you linked would probably perform the best for most people.

Curious to see how the review turns out. Those m.2 waterblocks that have been a gimmick all these years, might finally be starting to make sense 🤣

Im having as well the HR-09 in black and have to say im fine with it.. Cools nicely the PCIE gen 4 Disk...

Regarding the M.2 2280 - performs as well as the MOBO heatsink from the test i saw, sou would not consider it much..

Im Would be goung with the HR-10 from Thermalright as it has 4 heatpipes, performs well and looks very nice.. And personal preference in this product i thing that fins add more than little fans..  😉 But thats just my opinion....  And yes as wella ThermalRight "FAN" - on amazon youll find the HR-10 for about 10 USD/EUR/POUND... so its a nobrainer 😛

Thanks for the comments guys.

Right now I think it is a toss up between the Thermalright HR-10

image.thumb.png.93cc1ebbc44d214ff29bf92ab0006fe7.png

Or

This less well know, but evidently one hell of a contender, the NewHail NH1

It does really well in THIS review, though not surprised as it has 3x direct contact heatpipes.

Lmao, that's nuts. I would be tempted, but due to the thickness of its profile, I doubt I would get that to fit in my M.2 position:p

Yeah would be as well tempted 😁 but its a challenge to place it somewhere… but as your slot is next to RAM it will be fine passive cooled from case airflow. So i would go for the thermalright HR-10 or HR-09.

And the HR-09 has a nice finn design from the above so if it would fit under your RAM fan would be benefitial as well for it 🙃 better then for the HR-10 which has a flat top not much suporting airflow from above…

or buy all and ill buy from you all the thermal right one for the full price😇 once you make the testing…

Let us know how you desided….😉

I recently replaced my Thermalright HR-10 with the TeamGroup TForce Dark Airflow. And temps dropped by about 5c.

I might have to try and get their waterflow 01. But the AirFlow 06 is magnetically stackable. I wonder how high it will stack.

Upcoming new 2280 M.2 SSD Coolers showcased during Computex 2024 by Team Group

but they are as well cosiderably larger then the HR10 right?

They are all taller.

I was able to move my HR10 into my Asrock deskmini x300. Which is why i upgraded in the first place. And it fit in the deskmini with little room to spare. 🙂
