Intel has announced that it has found the root cause of the crashing issues plaguing its CPUs. The company will issue a microcode update to address the issues by mid-August, ostensibly ending the long-running saga that began when the first sporadic reports of CPU crashing errors surfaced in December 2022 and grew to a crescendo by the end of 2023.  

 

Intel's advisory says an erroneous CPU microcode is the root cause of the incessant instability issues. The microcode caused the CPU to request elevated voltage levels, resulting in the processor operating outside its safe boundaries

I would imagine the likes of Gamers Nexus etc will re-run benchmarks to compare pre/post microcode update performance to see if this move gimps the processors ability to boost etc.

While Intel is still the big boy on the block, there concerns seem small and there reply not only weak but very late. I think they should be more worried what a threat Ryzen poses to them, especially in light of this fiasco as it will only drive users to AMD.

With the exception of an old Cyrix, I only ever bought Intel CPUs for work & play until late 2018...now I have AMD TR 2950X, 3950X, 5950X and 7950X3D...I will take a close look at Intel's Arrow Lake and the Ryzen 9K / X3D but am in no hurry at this stage. I know die-hard Intel fans who are switching from Intel to AMD even for the current 7950X, that includes hosting and 'server-for-rent' commercial operators who have been taking a bath on downtime and replacements for 13900K/KS but especially 14900K/KS

I find all this hard to believe that the physical processors have actual issues.

 

The ME is probably the main culprit for people's stability issues also noting motherboard manufacturers using incorrect firmware and or uCode. 

 

13700K has been under dry ice and is aged well. Has seen v-core as high as 1.7v and Vccsa as high as 1.5v. It was sent to MrScott and he now uses it. Without issues. 

 

14700K I have is fine too. Also been under dry ice and several times. The only difference between this and a 900 series is mour Atom cores and p core boost clocks. Which the cpu runs fine 16 threads 6.3 to 6.4ghz under DryIce and 1.60v+. 

 

I did kill my MSI gaming plus wifi with the 14700K. RMA the board and it's not stable. It shut off and that was that. MSI replaced a cap. Board still shuts off. 

 

Called MSI and the tech asked for me to update bios. It worked fine before.....

 

So I updated the bios and the board is super unstable. Having issues even with the simplest overclocks. 

 

Put the 14700K into my B660 board and it works great!! No issues. Same OS. Updated ME. No problems. Boosts well, hits 288w like a champ. 

 

Wish I had a 14900K, but I don't need extra area effecient cores. They don't get me hard, so aim not paying for the strip tease of SP ratings that only certain Asus boards provide. It's likely a bullshit number. People say it changes on them. Well yes, but when looking at XTU, your fastest starred cores do Not change. Talk that as my opinion here. 

 

The fix will be through ME. Intel probably fucked up when releasing ME for next gen. No surprise there, it happens.

 

Me on the other hand get to buy a new motherboard cause MSI is gonna try and blame Intel for the issues like the guy told me on the phone. How about send me a new board with a factory shipped bios so I can get back to benching??
