3DMark Releases Storage Benchmark (Direct Storage)

UL has incorporated a DirectStorage feature test into the 3DMark Storage Benchmark DLC, providing gamers with a free update to evaluate the impact of Microsoft鈥檚 DirectStorage technology on their PC gaming performance. This benchmark enables users to measure the potential improvements in how game data is loaded, offering valuable insights into the effectiveness of DirectStorage. DirectStorage is a technology developed by Microsoft for Windows PCs equipped with PCIe SSDs. It aims to reduce the overhead associated with loading game assets by allowing the GPU to decompress certain data instead of the CPU, especially when used with technologies like GDeflate.

Interesting, we're slowly getting there I guess? Wonder if there will be a difference in NVME-> CPU and NVME->PCH or not? Guess I'll have to take a look at some point 馃檪

Are any games using DirectStorage yet? Feel like there must be some, but wasn't sure.

Forespoken, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Star Wars: Outlaws. I believe more Sony games use the API but I am not 100% sure.

There are some challenges with it but I am not fully aware of what they are. I just know on the backend, if it was a win/win, it鈥檇 be used more. There must be some draw backs, whether it鈥檚 resource management or level of effort for the reward in most scenarios.

I could be wrong, this is all speculation, and complete conjecture. I am sure there are some deep dives out there with more info.
