Nvidia wants credit for pre-rendered Witcher 4 trailer

Recommended Posts

I've seen this posted on a few tech sites, and the way it's being presented is very odd. This is a pre-rendered video not meant to show off what the game will look like at all, it's akin to the CP2077 trailer that released years before the game. Yet it seems Nvidia wants people to believe this has something to do with the GeForce 5000 series even though this game has no release date planned and likely won't come out until GeForce 6000 or even 7000.

CD Projekt Red has released the first trailer for The Witcher IV at the Game Awards 2024, introducing an open-world single-player RPG developed with Unreal Engine 5. The game aims to expand the Witcher series by incorporating new gameplay mechanics and elements, initiating a new chapter in the franchise. Utilizing Unreal Engine 5, The Witcher IV seeks to provide a more immersive and technically advanced gaming experience, enhancing the series' renowned storytelling and world-building capabilities. The trailer centers on Cirilla, Geralt's adopted daughter, establishing her as the main character. This shift follows the conclusion of Geralt's storyline in the previous trilogy and aligns with her prominent role in Andrzej Sapkowski's novels and her playable sections in The Witcher 3. The cinematic trailer was rendered using Nvidia's forthcoming GeForce RTX 50 series graphics card, highlighting a partnership that leverages advanced graphical technology to improve the game's visual quality.

This collaboration with Nvidia demonstrates CD Projekt Red's dedication to integrating the latest technology to enhance the gaming experience.

Does it even matter what product you use to prerender video? Wouldn't it just take longer on something else?

It does not matter at all. Any GPU can pre-render a 3D rendered video.

CD Projekt has always marketed their games as PC first, pushing tech and graphics. Even considering how poor (critically) the CP2077 launch was and damage to their reputation, the game sold ~10M copies in a couple days if I recall correctly.

Nvidia also pushed a LOT of their tech, and marketing into their games.

Witcher 2 “Uber sampling” settings. Witcher 3 hair tech. CP2077 RT. All some level of Nvidia sponsorship. All I see is Nvidia doubling down on this strategy. Yes, it’s misleading but it doesn’t mean it’s false. It’s just to hype up Blackwell, regardless if other GPUs can pre-render trailers. Glad outlets are calling it out and if you haven’t learned your lesson yet, wait at least 6 months before this game drops before considering a purchase.

What's funny is we'll probably be on 60 or 70 series GeForce by the time this game comes out.

They announced it’s in full production now. I suppose they should hit beta within 6 - 8 months if there are no major changes to scope. A release in 2025 is technically possible but I believe 2026 is more realistic, especially with this being their first UE title. I don’t believe we will have 60 series by that time.

We should know more by 2025 Summer Game Fest. Besides, if GTA VI is still on track, no publisher is releasing their huge AAA game near it.

They have already said the game is very unlikely to come out until after 2025. Remember that first 2077 trailer? It was released like 6-7 years before the game actually came out.

We know that this is just cheap Nvidia marketing, perhaps to indicate they will continue to push Nvidia features; but the average gamer doesn't understand that and they may be left thinking they should buy an RTX5000 GPU if they want to play the Witcher 4... which seems to be the kind of misleading marketing that Nvidia likes to do.

I was unaware they mentioned 2025 or earlier is unlikely. Traditionally when an AAA game goes from pre-production to production, it should be out within 1-2 years. That’s when the team is essentially full size and just grinding content, features, and squashing bugs. The only large risks are essentially external factors or large changes to the project. That’s why I inferred 2025/2026 is possible.

Unless Witcher 4 is trying to do something completely revolutionary, they should be able to get it out relatively soon. It’s going to come down what they’re trying to do in UE and if they have the capability to do it.

Agreed with the whole marketing nonsense strategy… I thought we were passed misleading hype trailers. A simple “Still in development, pre-rendered footage only” type subtitle would of been more… transparent.

They have been pretty clear that right now there is no release window, and gamers should not expect it in 2025 and likely not 2026 either. "It's done when it's done."

I think they really only just started full production for W4.

If they only just now started full production, then yeah 1-2 years seems unlikely to me given games these days taking multiple years to dev.

All fair points. I guess we’ll know when they at least feel confident it’s on track and in good shape. I do believe with UE5 they will be able to avoid a lot of their challenges with CP2077. Since we don’t know how ambitious the new title is, whos to say they won’t into different technical hurdles.
