Just got my 5700XT up and running. I bought it a few months ago, but the drivers were a mess, so I pulled it and set it aside while I waited for a more stable kernel driver.

 

If anyone is contemplating running this card in Linux, you are definitely going to want to run the latest 5.5 rc kernel along with the most recent Linux firmware. Before the latest kernel the card couldn't be OC'd in Linux, and it had all sorts of bugs that caused random and somewhat frequent crashes. I've now had it up and running without crashing for the last three days.

 

It is stable at 2085/900 under heavy OpenCL stress testing. There is still no ROCm support (that stack is generally a bit of a mess to run with upstream kernels anyway), and generally speaking, OpenCL code paths and/or AMD's OpenCL driver will probably have to be updated to be completely for compatible with Navi. I haven't done any 3D or game testing, but I might fire it up if anyone is interested in Linux performance.

@tictoc out of interest what are the temps like under load on that GPU with your OC ? Is it air cooled ? Just wondering as AMD have not done all too well as of late with toasty GPU's.

Thanks for the info. Those temps seem fair considering its a reference design and using the blower type cooler. If it keeps to those temps under sustained load, it is not as toasty as I thought it may be. Will have to look at some reviews for non ref cooler types to compare the temps.

It didn't throttle at 75% fan speed, but at that speed it is probably louder than most people would want deal with. It was getting nice cool ambient air (16°C), because the blower sits right on top of the bottom vents on my case. The posted temps was where it leveled out after 10-11 minutes of sustained load. Gaming you could probably get away with lower fan speed, and not lock the boost clocks at max OC.

Ha, I am used to loud rigs so that probably would not bother me lol but I get your point. Good idea with locating it closer to your case vent so it has access to cooler air as opposed to the warmer ambient air within the case.

I knew I had to buy a 5700XT from the very beginning, instantly loved it, so I chose the MSI Gaming X 8GB. It has one of the best heatsinks in the business and the fans will shut down completely when idling. Runs pretty cool. Definitely much lower backplate temps than with my RX 580... you could fry an egg on that thing... lol

I recall almost burning myself on some GPU backplates in the past. Is that 5700XT in a workstation or media server of some form ?

I ended up with tictoc's card he's talking about here in the thread.  Still loving it, best GPU I've had to date.  I do think you made the right choice going for the Gaming X card there Storm-Chaser, the reference blower card does get quite loud.  Doesn't bother me a bit, I love reference blower cards.  But its definitely something to be aware of.  Mine tends to top out around 72*C or so at full load at 2050 / 900 with a custom fan profile at 100% fan speed around 75-80*C or so in the AMD CP (which puts the fan around 75% or so at full load).  I have started noticing some artifcating at times with the memory overclocked, but that could just mean I need to reseat the cooler.

It's an HP Z820 workstation. Incredible design and very innovative for it's time. 100% tool less. Also I had to go for the very rare factory liquid cooling system. I highly recommend you get one and find out for yourself. They can be had for $200 to $300 on ebay. Im running two E5-2696 v2 processors with a single core turbo of 3.5GHz and all core turbo of 3.1GHz. Gotta love 8 channel memory as well.

This is my current setup and I needed a decent GPU to future proof this machine for many years ahead. Not to mention four digital outputs.

Ps. Those little radiators are pretty bad ass if you ask me. No problems cooling, whatsoever. Matter of fact they are rated for the 150w E5 2687w v2.

Nice, I rather like the radiator design on that. With the ducting over the top I would imagine the cooling is fairly efficient. I love buying rigs and repurposing them. A rig like that would be good for FreeNAS, though obviously there is more potential for that rig. I am tempted to go FreeNAS when I do a re-build of the NAS, however I cannot fault QNAP devices.

Yup it would really be great for that type of work load. Memory speed is still very impressive with all 8 channels locked in. I definitely like using old hardware, it's like driving your 57 chevy around the state on Sunday afternoon. 

 

This rig also has active cooling on all 16 RAM modules. I currently have a 1680 v2 to see about OC with this robust cooling system.

If you do ever go down the z820 road you should take a look at the build I documented over at techpowerup. It's important to get the z820 with the higher gold rated 1125W PSU and later boot block date, so you can run ivy bridge processors in the E5 2600 series family. Earlier boot block date is limited to 1600Mhz memory and sandy bridge only IIRC.

Has anyone benchmarked one of these recently against a 1080ti with current drivers? I'm really curious on ditching Nvidia cards all together and replacing my 1080ti with a 5700xt in my GFs rig 

We ran a superposition 1080p extreme benchmark over at techpowerup last year. Seems the 5700 XT is more or less on par with a GTX 1080ti. And just a couple hundred points behind a 2060 super.

 

Can't tell you much about drivers tho. But if you search for the thread on Google you will see the results for yourself from the GPU comp. Regardless, something good about having a 5700XT under the hood so I would proceed as you would with the swap. Recommend the MSI RX 5700 XT gaming X it's one of the better cards on the market in terms of cooling and performance.

Saw those on ebay a few time.

 

You can custom build a micro atx dual cpu x79 too.

 

I miss my 5700xt sold it for like 300$ cad then with covid they are now 1300$ used

WOW. I've never seen anything like this. Im assuming you can OC via FSB as well since its X79?

My dual socket SuperMicro boards with the C602 chipset don't allow overclocking.  It'd be nice, but I mean with 32 cores with HT you kind of don't need to.  I cannot comment on that board linked above though.
