Might try to make this 7700k last me until DDR5 hits consumers PCs...

Nice. I agree with you on that, I am not upgrading any of my rig until the new DDR standard has hit the consumer market. Right now there is not need for me to be on the bleeding edge, so I can wait it out. Those speeds however are juicy, considering an architecture like Zen gets a healthy boost from RAM speeds, I can imagine the future Zen CPU's that release alongside DDR5 will eat this up.

I thought about waiting this out till Zen 4 or whatever next platform supposedly has DDR5 support. But I am struggling running newer games at 1440p on my current 4790k / 980 platform so I think I'll just bite the bullet with Zen 3 and RDNA2/Ampere. Besides it will be expensive when it first releases, so I am ok not being on that bleeding edge.

Yea you're still on ddr3 so it would be tough to wait that long.

I'm not waiting.  I have a new case, radiators, water block and cable sleeving just dying to be used in a new build.  Plus this segfaulting 1700x needs to be put out to pasture.
