[TECHSPOT] Chinese graphics maker is developing a GPU to rival Nvidia's GTX 1080

Recommended Posts

Would be good to have a new up and coming player. AMD, Nvidia and upcoming Intel are all well established companies but it would be nice to have a smaller underdog nipping at the heels of the larger companies. Competition, competition, competition is what I say.

Very interesting. This makes me wonder, how often does this happen? I can't recall a company coming out of the woodwork to try and compete with the big three, but I suppose that's because it either never happens or they never gain enough traction to make the news past the first article or two.

Big three? I know there's AMD and nVidia but as of right now I wouldn't really count Intel. They don't really make anything more powerful than GT 1030 and it's built into their CPUs.

I was just including Intel since I was considering CPU manufacturerers.

On that note I'd love to see how their new discrete GPU venture fares.

So would I actually. I hope it's successful enough that they end up making GPUs that will compete in the higher-end as well. It's kind of tiring and expensive to only really have nVidia at the top with AMD being a generation behind as far as performance goes in their high-end.

I would agree, but that being said I would still consider them a competitor just taking into consideration the budget they would have to compete with lol.

Well, they are dipping their toes in the dedicated GPU market next year albeit in the low-end. I think if they're successful there, they'll move onto higher-end hardware.

Fingers crossed, we need another competitor to start pegging it to Nvidia.

I just want someone to shake something up with regards to pricing especially. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of tax / difficulties in getting Chinese designed/made/etc GPUs to become popular in the West.

No doubt tariffs will play a part, especially for the US and its current battles with China on that front.
