Lord of the Rings 4K

Recommended Posts

So incase anyone is unaware, just a few days ago Lord of the Rings came out in 4K. The movies were shot on 35mm film which seems to land somewhere between 1080p and 4K in terms of image sharpness. The movies are sharper but not greatly so. The best change is the color correction. It hasn't been upscaled to try to look like it's HDR, but there were a lot of scenes with bad color tinting before the remaster, and the color correction alone makes a big difference.

So far I think the cheapest way to watch this is actually the windows store. You can rent the non-extended 4K movies in 4K for $4. The extended versions can not be rented but can be purchased. I rented the first one past night and was not at all disappointed. It looks like it was filmed recently and not 20 years ago now.

Read that these were coming some weeks ago, and I'm glad to hear you weren't disappointed. I watched the extended version of both trilogies earlier this year and really enjoyed them, so I'm interested in the 4K versions for sure.

Well actually, when I made this thread I had only watched the first one so far. Last night I watched the second one and in terms of quality that was a bit disappointing. I think they may have used some low res first gen digital cameras or something for some of the shots in the second one because there are some scenes that look like 720p.

Hmmm, interesting. I'll probably give it some time and see what more people think. That'll give me more time to forget about what exactly happens as well, so watching again would be more interesting.
