Folding@Home 20th Anniversary Folding Competition - Lots of prizes up for grabs !

Recommended Posts

Put it this way, until GPU's come down in price, getting the community folding project started in any meaningful way did become harder.

For heat reasons I need to find a sensible place for the rig, Loft would be great but in summer it gets way toasty so running a rig up there would be a no no.

I was considering putting it in my office in a wall mounted config BUT I fear the heat it will kick out will murder me.

Need a room with decent thermal control lol. Will have to have a think.

Pfft, i'm not the threat anymore. You guys with multiple 3090's are. The M40s and K80's did not pan out. Biggest issue was 16x extenders and Heat. They thermal throttled so hard! You better pray I don't find any 3 series cards for MSRP.

It would have been so cool if that setup would have worked. I have no problems with getting beaten by a setup like that!

accidental double post... sorry... well actually this was a post I didn't think went through because it was still sitting in the submit box... and I hit submit again later.

No, FaT's are all about every last piece of tech we can get our grubby hands on to fold. The MOAR, the merrier.

Like Avacado said, it's no problem. Ask your neighbors, friends and family, install F@H on the display computers at your local hardware store, whatever you can to produce more than @Avacado!

Ok cool... I'm no threat lol... even with my wife's PC going full blast... it's just an HTPC with a 3200G... the CPU/GPU combination on it can't hold a candle to my CPU alone.... it's crazy what PPD I see out of a heavily throttled 3900x compared to my old CPU's and hers.... makes me wonder how well the 5000 series does.  I usually see around 250 to 300k a day out of my CPU, her system only nets around 65-70k per day as a whole

Yea, it's a 1900x 8/16 TR. Not really sure I want to burn her like that, maybe when I put her on water in the caselabs TH10a with the 4x2080 Ti's this summer. All dependent on whether I can score a new card for the S8S in the computer room though.

I would love access to 2080ti's... but my poor 3900x and 5700xt will have to do... this computer is worth more than both my cars ?

For the new guys, this is the EHW Community Folding Project. Just needs GPU's now and a sensible place in the house to run it.

I am still tempted to get some decommissioned mining cards for it.

Got my rig all back together and leak free last night. Starting folding and let it run through the night to see what it will do (other than keep my room nice and toasty). I am pretty excited about this event and being able to use my PC for more than just occasional space heating. Thanks all who put this together

Sure hope that isn't to fold on. Those 1x risers are going to gimp your PPD.

Expand

Certainly is. For a simple multi GPU RIG this was one of the easiest ways to go with respect to cramming 6x GPU's into one space while keeping cost reasonable. I had already discussed the Pro's and Cons of the system in the CFP Thread and yes there will be a little gimping of the PPD output but not by a hugely offensive margin in my opinion. It is not a perfect solution I agree, but for a modest GPU folding rig, it will do the job.

I did some testing and it looks like I'm not going to get into tier 1. In order for me to do 12+ WUs a day, I need to be folding for 28 hours a day.

@Andrew, let me talk to the powers that be and see if we can start getting some of these 28 days you speak of, though I refuse to work the extra 4 hours in my new long days haha.

It might no put out a lot of PPD, but if you CPU fold as well, you will meet the WU requirements.

Or even a laptop, mine completes 14 units a day with a GTX580m. 1 minute TPF on 13439 units, 150k ppd.
Not sure if the "max-packet-size = small" flag really works, but with 10k points per unit you would think it's a small unit.

Each WU I get these days takes 2hrs10mins - 2hrs30mins to complete on my 2070. I have no idea what settings, I'm pretty sure they're at the default ones.

Oh yeah, I meant to reply to that. I did try that out, it does push my CPU close to the max temp so I don't really want to do that. I'm fine with my GPU temps, those only get up to 65c with the fans at 30%.
