If you're the type of user who feels the need to sift through updates, you probably shouldn't be on the home version anyway. It makes perfect sense that the version designed for least capable users would have the fewest optional updates. The straws some of you guys grasp at to find reasons to hate windows is... well highly illogical to put it nicely. In this thread: windows 11 prompt notifications = forced updates, Microsoft does the exact same thing they have always done but suddenly it's a problem, complaing that windows 10 isn't the last windows OS. The only legitimate complaint about windows updates is when they mess things up for businesses, but business shouldn't be using windows home anyway, and they should have the ability to pick and choose updates. For those of you complaining about it here, why are you using windows home if you care so much about this? Not much logic to any of these complaints, though by pointing that out I fear I may be inviting even more illogical complaints. In a time of so much unjustified and false skepticism, I think it's a good thing that Microsoft is proactive about updates. Infected PCs can infect other PCs, it can be hyjacked to send DDOS attacked out, or for somethingas simple as mining. I'd rather they piss off the crowd that can't handle change than leave millions upon millions of devices connected to the internet without updates. As someone who has been doing PC repair for a long time, I can tell you with certainly that whatever Microsoft is doing is working. It's extremely rare for me to see a PC with a virus on windows 10 now. Ten years ago it's was probably most repairs were virus related.

Microsoft Confirms Activision Blizzard Will Release Games on PlayStation 'Beyond Existing Agreements' - IGN WWW.IGN.COM Microsoft has confirmed that "Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles" will not just be released... Part of me is wondering if MS sees this as a way to force Sony to allow cross play without a hassle.

Who cares if windows 10 is the last version of windows or not. That's a non-issue. The logic is simple, older devices that lack security updates are more prone to infection and much like in the real world infections can spread more from devices that have them so having a bunch of out of date devices connected to the internet creates risk for everyone. It's not like PC will stop working without updates. If people really don't want to update, they don't have to. Again, this has always been the case since at least windows XP and it should not be a surprise to anyone in the slightest. I think the only reason to even write an article like this is to rile people up about nothing.

This is nothing new. Windows 10 isn't like pervious versions of windows where the first version is the same as the current version minus updates. Windows 10 has had major revisions many times and they regularly drop support for the older versions. In the past we would have service packs for windows and users could be limited in what they could do if they didn't ever install any service packs. It makes sense really, if you don't do updates at some point you won't be able to get any updates without updating enough to get updates.

reuters Researchers achieve nuclear fusion energy milestone
UltraMega replied to UltraMega's topic in Technology and Science
That would be a different tech. There is tech being developed to burn nuclear waste in a clean way that can be done on small and large scales. If that ever works out, that would be a great fit for mobile applications like vehicles. The tech here in the OP would be for powering cities. -
From what I've read it sounds like the deal Bungie is agreeing to will allow them to continue to release games on multiple platforms and maintain a high level of autonomy, with Sony coming in as a parent company. Bungie doesn't really have a lot of IP these days so I doubt Sony was looking at this deal as a good way to lock down any specific games but rather just a way to acquire manpower more so than anything else, as well as grab an IP that has a consistent cash flow. I suspect Bungie is working on a new Destiny like MMO game and they will want it to be multiplatform to maintain the cash stream. I'll admit there is definitely some cause for concern that some titles may end up being exclusive in the long run that otherwise wouldn't have been, but I'm optimistic that the overall benefit from these mergers will be higher quality games from both Microsoft and Sony. Just going to have to wait and see what happens.

kotaku Ubisoft says "Gamers don't get it" in NFT interview
UltraMega posted a topic in Software News
Ubisoft Executive Says Users 'Don't Get It' In Extraordinary NFT Interview KOTAKU.COM 'So, it's really, for them. It's really beneficial. But they don't get it for now' As a gamer I don't get it. I don't get how a company can manage to make so many mistakes and still be in business. With this news, I'm really starting to wish they simply go bankrupt. -
Researchers achieve milestone on path toward nuclear fusion energy WWW.REUTERS.COM U.S. government scientists said on Wednesday they have taken an important step in the long trek toward making nuclear fusion - the very process that powers stars - a viable energy source for humankind. This is a major breakthrough. Essentially this would be the ignition device for some future nuclear energy source. The ignition needs to produce more energy than it uses and that has been a difficult task for scientists to achieve.

No screenshots, no details at all really. Just an impending sense that our hardware will be shamed.

yahoo finance Russia Plans To Ban Crypto Mining
UltraMega replied to UltraMega's topic in Journalism & Entertainment
Stocks are down because the government announced plans to raise interest rates. Nothing to do with this news. https://www.thestreet.com/.amp/investing/rising-interest-rates-hurting-stocks-risk-assets As for crypto, it had already dropped some before this news but it started dropping way more as soon as this news came out. Maybe it's not a direct cause and the timing is pure coincidence however I'd say they're more than likely related. Not saying crypto and the markets don't move together these days but right now there is even more going on than just that. Bad news across the board. -
I've got nothing against Linux. I don't think it's realistic to think an open source OS would ever become the OS of choice for your average PC user because that's not the user base Linux aims for anyway, and for many other reasons. I don't have a dog in the API race, but I don't think devs have to pay to use directX either... That would be news to me. I suppose one reason they might choose to use DX would be since they probably already use it for Xbox so it's just less work to stick with it for PC. I'd imagine there are some trade offs between different APIs and I don't see a problem with it not being open source. I don't think Microsoft is buying devs to keep games off Linux. PC is an open platform so they don't get anything from PC game sales anyway unless you buy them from Microsoft and for a long time they didn't seem to care about that at all. I think Microsoft is probably a lot more worried about Android in terms of a Windows competitor. Windows is a small part of Microsoft's overall business now. If Linux did take off someday, Microsoft would probably just go with the flow and release game pass for Linux.
-
I don't mean you specifically, but there are a lot of PC gamers who seem to just hate game pass for any and all reasons they can come up with. Your attitude about it is synonymous with a lot of other stuff I've read online. I'm not gaslighting... that's not what gaslighting means. I'm just maintaining my position and it's hard not to roll my eyes at what I see as over the top and unjustified skepticism. I see game pass as simply an option that's a really good deal, from my perspective it's hard to relate to anyone who is unhappy about it. I don't see it as a threat, just a good deal.

Good thing you have plenty of retro systems to keep you entertained until the gaming industry gets more inline with your preferences. Until then I'll be enjoying having a huge library of games for less than a pack of cigarettes, on top of all the games I might choose to buy. More than anything the reception game pass gets from some PC gamers is proof that PC gamers are extremely eletist and anal sometimes.

Open standards are great but video games are an entertainment business with huge dev costs. There are positives and negatives to this kind of ramped up competition but as PC gamers we get the best of both worlds. I'd also argue that we can expect higher quality games, but there is no denying some console gamers might miss out of a few games in the process. Even if you are a staunch Linux gamer, there's more games available now than ever.
-
I agree people who own Playstation already are potentially going to miss out on a few titles. That's the negative. There are also positive aspects to heightened competition as I've stated. Vendor lock ins absolutely have their benefits and it's completely short sided to ignore that. The reason Sony is on top in this race is because of their exclusive first party content. Being first party, their content is very high quality and it makes perfect sense that Microsoft would want to try to do the same. Yes it's always a bummer when games are not multi-platform but it's also not unusual at all in this industry. Sony has done the same, like when it acquired Naughty Dog for example. And let's not ignore that if Activision wasn't struggling and in need of new management Microsoft probably would not have done this.

yahoo finance Russia Plans To Ban Crypto Mining
UltraMega posted a topic in Journalism & Entertainment
Russia Plans To Ban Crypto Mining FINANCE.YAHOO.COM Russia believes that cryptocurrencies may hurt its financial stability. Crypto fell a lot lately, this is why. I expect this to happen in more and more places over time. Crypto seems to do more harm than good, especially in an era the energy/resources used for mining is so problematic.
