Contentment - is it what the PC industry hates ?
UltraMega replied to J7SC_Orion's topic in Water Coolers
If you were playing counter strike competitively or something like that, the best hardware would probably be more meaningful, especially on the CPU side, but for the more mainstream games lately there isn't much beyond having a top tier GPU. Unless you play at low res, all the newer and more interesting games will be GPU limited all the time, and with ray tracing still being so early the difference between a GPU that can run CP2077 at max with DLSS and get 40 FPS vs one that can get 45 for $500 more is just not compelling for anyone who doesn't hate money. On top of that we're still waiting for next gen to kick in. We don't have UE5 games yet, or games from other devs that are on par with what UE5 looks to deliver. Ray tracing is still only 2 generations in, and only one for AMD. I suspect in another GPU generation or two when ray tracing performance gets a lot better, we'll start seeing some stuff on PC that will make an upgrade be more interesting again. Until then it feels like we're still waiting for something interesting to come along. We have some PS4 era type games that got ray tracing slapped on for new gen hardware but really there is still yet to be a single game that is truly next gen yet, except maybe MSFS2020... and even that game is a long way from where it is supposed to eventually end up. Eventually that game is supposed to have ray tracing as well but considering how demanding it is already, I suspect they're going to wait until hardware is a lot more capable before adding RT into the game. I think we're probably still a year away at least from something really interesting happening in the PC gaming world. Before then, we'll have new hardware come out that will boost RT performance quite a bit but that will probably just amount to higher res for now, less need for AI upscaling, so it probably won't really amount to any interesting new visual features. I somewhat suspect Rockstar is sitting on a mostly ready to ship version of GTA6 but they're waiting for next gen console sales to saturate the market more. Chip shortages have certainly played a role in that and devs are still releasing all their games for older consoles. I think around the time GTA6 comes out, it will mark a time when things finally start to shift and really break away from last gen so we can start to see something new and exciting. -
Job interview question that made no sense
UltraMega replied to UltraMega's topic in Operating Systems
Yea, it felt like a lot of the questions were designed that way. It was a written test so there was no communication with another person about any of it in this case. I don't think a single question actually had anything to do with computer repair. -
guru3d 5 new AMD CPUs including Ryzen 7 5700X
UltraMega replied to UltraMega's topic in Hardware News
If I were looking to upgrade from my 3700x, the 5700x would be a solid choice. I could sell my 3700x for maybe close to $200 on ebay, at least $150, and get the 5700x for ~$330 and get a pretty good IPC lift for ~$170 or less which wouldn't be a bad upgrade for the price at all. Personally though, I game at 4K so a better CPU than what I already have wouldn't really make any difference. -
Job interview question that made no sense
UltraMega replied to UltraMega's topic in Operating Systems
Yea, after thinking about it for a while later on, that was my best guess as well but didn't occur to me at the time. If it had just said "change the timeout setting for the 'select OS' menu" or something like that, that would have been much easier to understand. I definitely know how to do that... No loss though, it was a dumb job and I have a bunch more interviews scheduled. Kinda the first time in a long time I've looked for a job, been self-employed for a long time but covid messed that up. It's dope this time around because my resume is a lot better than it was the last time I was looking for a job so I'm getting a lot of offers and have the ability to be picky. I have an interview coming up for a way better job that really wants me so yea, things are looking good on that front. -
I went to an interview with a computer repair company. I almost for sure wouldn't take the job because the pay is low but I was still curious so I went. They had me fill out a test and one of the questions/tasks was "set the time to list the operating system at 17 seconds". I'm sure this is something I could do but I don't get what that question was asking. Any ideas?

Intel Raptor Lake CPUs could outgun AMD with rumored boost of up to 5.8GHz | TechRadar WWW.TECHRADAR.COM Are we set to get ridiculously fast clocks with Intel’s next-gen flagship? The future of the CPU race is looking bright. Could 6ghz overclocks be within reach? Seems possible.

Emm i think it was that in the last thread about this, the intel CPU had much worse DDR5 ram because the latency was so high but here it's an even comparison.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D -1080p and 720p gaming gets tested (guru3d.com) Not a major victory, but it seems the 5800X3D generally beats or at least ties the Core i9-12900K for gaming. Update: Official review benchmarks:

The process of taking ownership so that you can edit xbox files is specific and annoying. It's best to find a youtube guide IMO. Hopefully this video will help: -
techspot Epic Games releases Unreal Engine 5 to the public
UltraMega replied to UltraMega's topic in Software News
I found a pre-compiled version of the demo that doesn't need the UE5 editor to run. 1fichier.com: Cloud Storage 1FICHIER.COM The performance is slightly worse than the console demo on my PC. Still a lot of optimization work to be done for sure. FYI you have to change windows scaling to get the render resolution to change in the demo for some reason. What's weird is the FPS is about the same at 1080P that it is in 4K. I've watched some videos of people running it on more powerful hardware and they get a similar result. Seems to have some odd bottlenecks. -
Yea I agree, it's time to close this thread as this is just not the place for this kind of discussion. I definitely have no issue with computer stuff marketed towards women. Really this just stood out to me because it looks so tacky (IMO), like a very low tier attempt to market to women, but then again there are a lot of tacky looking parts out there in general.

Back to the actual ram, I just think it's funny. It makes me think what would a computer part marketed just towards men look like and then I remembered how GPUs used to look.

Idk, ya know on one hand I think in a survey its fine to ask what gender and just list male or female, or maybe add in "other". Maybe surveys should specify "biological gender". On the other hand it's like, who cares. If people who struggle to feel welcome in a two box system want a couple more boxes added, no sweat off my back. Then again I doubt anyone would care about that sort of thing if they didn't feel sort of unwelcome by society in the first place. When I see something like that in a survey I think it's a little silly but probably just an example of people who feel like they don't have an easy place in society trying to win the small battles they can to try to inch their acceptance forward.
-
Probably stsrting to get into deep water here. This was definitely not the intention of me posting this thread but I'll add my two cents. The problem with gender, as in gender roles and not biological gender, is that it's a concept made up by society. Not everyone wants to fit into those boxes and really we shouldn't have any boxes or pre-defined notions of how people are supposed to express gender. Until society stops worrying about these lables and pressuring everyone to fit into a box, this will be an ongoing issue. Some people would tell me I'm not a man if I expect my gf to split the bills with me. Too freaking expensive to be worried about that kind of stuff anymore. People who get caught up on this stuff are living in the past.

Dirt Rally 2.0 has VR support. I don't have a VR kit, but I have Drit Rally 2.0. IMO it's one of the best out there in terms of physics. Really feel every bump in the road.

How to reduce Windows 11 64bit Page File Usage?
UltraMega replied to HeyItsChris's topic in Operating Systems
The way windows works it mostly just mirrors some files onto the hard drive page file to make certain tasks potentially load faster but it won't use it if it doesn't need to, though some files will always be there on reserve so it may look likes it's being used more than it really is. -
Came across this and just thought it was funny. Ram is getting so overly flashy these days. But hey, at least it's gender inclusive now. How to reduce Windows 11 64bit Page File Usage?
UltraMega replied to HeyItsChris's topic in Operating Systems
I don't remember how off the top of my head but you can turn off the page file if you want to. Or get 32gbs of ram. That's the point where windows pretty much stops using the page file.
