  1. What RAM do you have per chance ? I found that with Zen + getting 3600Mhz was possible with my GSkill Trident Z but it was not truly stable. I had to back it down to 3466Mhz as well. I just think you hit the IMC ceiling with anything above 3466Mhz. As we all know though, lower clock with tighter timings will beat out higher clocks so it is not a huge loss. 3200Mhz was the sweet spot for Zen+ so any higher is just a bonus IMHO.
  2. Yeah I have always been a fan of game studios holding off for release if it means I get a better experience for it first time round...after all it is what you pay for.
  3. I have always know to stay well clear from SMR drives. I will not use them for anything as the performance is just painful, even for portable uses. The fact that WD is still going to use them for one of the RED lines for NAS use is just upsetting. Never use SMR drives in a NAS unless you enjoy poor performance.
  4. I will be able to test in the coming days as I nabbed myself a GTX 1660 for my new Plex build for hardware acceleration. I will see how it goes and report back.
  5. Well I am hoping it is not a Plex limitation as well, otherwise that would be a mighty bummer.
  6. So I notice a few things right now. 1. You are using the Fast preset on the calculator, do you fair better at a higher clock rate say 3600Mhz but on the Safe preset ? Fastest is nice but not always going to work out, so sometimes you have to fallback to safe, but in all honesty the timings still stay fairly tight. 2. I notice your memory rank is set to 2. Are you sure your kit is dual ranked ? This plays a part in outputting the correct settings. I ironically had mine set to dual by accident and could never get my OC stable, as soon as I went to single ranked (Which my ram is) I was able to get the OC stable. 3. Do yourself a favour and in the voltage section of the calculator, set all your voltages to maximum in the BIOS. Once you are stable you can revisit the voltages and reduce them later if you want, but we might as well just remove that as a factor straight away.
  7. Hmmm that is puzzling. I would have expected the Video Engine to see more utilisation and not have the CPU's pegged like that. Unless we are looking at the fact that the GPU when using NVENC requires some serious baby sitting by the CPU's ? I know this is something that happens when you are Folding for instance, Nvidia cards rely on the CPU to do some of the lifting. I know you have an older CPU but I would not expect it to peg it that hard. I will have to wait until I get my GTX 1660 to compare against my AMD 2700X and see if I get the same thing. I will take a look at another app that supports NVENC to compare against Handbrake. The other factor is that Handbrake does not use NVENC effectively ? Hard to say right now.
  8. Have you tried changing your Ram Type to A3/A2 category ? I believe your kit should be in this category. This will influence what the calculator outputs. I have the same kit, all be it the 32GB Variant and I can hit over 3600Mhz. (This is a 4x 8GB Module kit). I do know that as the memory count goes up, it can hamper the overall speeds you can achieve. Can you attain a lower speed setting ? Have you tried looser timings ? The calculator is great, but also a guideline at times and what it gives out does not guarantee 100% compatibility. If 3600Mhz does not work on the tighter timings, loosen them up. If that does not work then keep the looser timings but also reduce the ram clock until you get stability. Once you know you are stable, you can revisit the timings again,
  9. Nice, will get my listen on ! Been so swamped the last week.
  10. Sounds responsible to me....and "Coincidentally" will be launched ready for the next gen GPU's more so I would imagine.
  11. For an accurate test why not test NVENC encoder using OBS : https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce...casting-guide/ This way you can see what sort of load your GPU is getting and apply that theory to the Plex server with some degree of accuracy. What I will say though is from my encoding experience, the GPU is not going to get hot to the point where you need to start thinking of solutions for it, but this is only in my experience.
  12. Yeah the XT refresh is a cash grab and it will work as people love the XT naming and will probably just but it because of that lol
  13. I think Ampere will be something to behold with the way things are going ! Now we just have to wait and see about what that competitive price will be assuming they want to keep AMD at bay..

    Hello

Welcome to EHW ! I remember Wing Commander all too well which I am thinking might make me on the older side haha. Nice rig btw
  15. That is a good point, I forgot about the XT refresh. I think they will be delaying the 4000 series then as there is no point in releasing this refresh and then going straight into the next gen. Personally I think the XT series is silly enough as it is, no need for a refresh at this point.
  16. Ahh right, then yes that would make sense to put some of those directories on an SSD for sure. I have a 1TB SSD I may just have to dedicate to that stuff then ! Nice find !
  17. I have the 3950x, Great CPU. It beats the 2990WX which what I had before from a general computing/gaming perspective. Granted rendering or anything core hungry will prefer a threadripper. It goes without saying that the X570 boards is where it is at for the 3950x, I can only speak from experience that the Asrock make some awesome boards on the X570 platform. My Asrock Aqua flies with this CPU. However the Asrock Taichi is a brilliant board from what I have see on reviews and from what I have gathered from speaking with those who have used it. As for RAM, Samsung B-die based RAM all day long ! I personally have the G.skill Trident Z and they are fantastic and due to the Samsung B-Die have some great OC headroom. Currently running what was a stock 3200Mhz kit at 3733 @ CL 16-17-16-34. What I will say is that this CPU does run warm and expect to see sudden temp spikes, just seems to be the nature of this CPU. I would imagine looking at your current WC setup that you are going to be OK on the temp side of things. I think the platform has a good amount of life in it. Forget about the upgrade path, it will last a good while before the need to upgrade again. Though the good thing is that X570 will support the 4000 series of CPU from AMD.
  18. Will have to wait for @1usmus to chime in on that one. As for Thaiphoon Burner, either you read it wrong or something has changed between one software version to another regarding its detection maybe ? Only way to test is to get an older version of the software and test it against your current version and see if it comes up as a different value.
  19. Have you tried using a different memory revision such as the A3/A2/B2 dropdown to see what results you get if any ? Possibly a bug @1usmus any idea ?
  20. I think it could be likely, they might as well cash in on the 3000 series while they can. Though you could argue they should release anyway in order to punish Intel into the ground.
  21. Yeah those videos are cringe! Looks like the build is shaping up nicely. What I will say is while there is no harm in it, I am not sure SSD cache will give you a noticeable improvement so far as a Plex environment. As I said before, I can only see it being of use should there be frequently used files users are accessing. I could be wrong, as I say...no harm in it as why not lol. I will do my Plex server build thread soon now I have ordered the parts Mini Itx build here we come !

    Hello

Hey and welcome ! Look forward to seeing you around
  23. Good thing you don't care, I can tell you now that those are LOUD at full blast lol. Good idea on the 10GB NIC. Great for LAN, though I always find people buy them in hopes of helping there out wards streams over the net and have to remind them their broadband is going to be a massive bottleneck.
  24. Nice ! I did look at the 2080Ti's with WC but at that time I was not running a GPU's as part of my WC loop, so ended up getting the AIO cooled 2080Ti's. As you say though, these Ampere cards look to eat power so I am hoping they and AIB's will have put the emphasis on pre-blocked cards at launch.
