You can always just pick up a cheap board that's hot swappable and pick up whatever switches you want to try. If you hate them, just swap to something else without having to buy a whole new keyboard. Microcenter has a full aisle of keyboard switches, keycaps, etc in addition to all the keyboards they sell. I am probably going to pick up some of these Panda switches. I have the Glorious Pandas in one of my boards and they are great. Curious to see how he Redragon ones compare. microcenter.com WWW.MICROCENTER.COM

What is the best way to store used radiators?
Fluxmaven replied to Barefooter's topic in Water Coolers
I have so many rads laying around that I just toss em in the closet. I'll blitz and flush them when/if I ever use them again. I've cleaned and dried, or left filled and capped but I always end up cleaning them again before reusing anyway. -
I am thankfully not going anywhere for Christmas. At the point where 4 of the water cooled rigs in the house need to come apart for upgrades and/or maintenance so I just need to force myself to rip everything apart and take care of it. I may need to cheat and rent some cards if I don't get those rigs back online, but I'll fold on something

Sometimes you need those little victories to keep going. I've never been one for under hood bling, but if it's a functional upgrade I'm all for it. I hate working on brakes... I have had new pads, rotors, lines etc for the Miata for over a year now putting off upgrading. After redoing the whole braking system on my clapped out E30 I just lost all interest in the car. It's that time of year where all the motorcycles I want are cheap enough I'd actually buy them. So I have had a little bit of urge to finish up the E30 so I can sell it and get the garage space back

Browns are just scratchy reds... Barely tactile. I do have a board with lubed Gateron Browns that's super smooth and quiet that feels nice, but it's too light for me. I'd agree that Gateron versions of all the common switches are better than the legit Cherry counterparts. I like heavy tactile and/or clicky switches. My favorite boards to type on currently have Glorious Pandas, BOX Royal, BOX Navy, and Topre. It's fun to bust out the old Model M with buckling springs from time to time as well. There is a point where you get too much of a good thing lol. I have a meme board with 150G springs in some Gateron Greens

MX Reds are the most disgusting thing I've ever touched. I have not used that site before. Looks fine though.

I wasn't really happy with the stock shift knob in the mustang. It's just too small and I don't like the two tone metal and leather. I was going to buy a white Bullitt knob from Ford performance but $145 was a bit steep for a shift knob. Comparing to the $400 dark horse titanium knobs it almost seems justifiable... Then I saw that AmericanMuscle had these Speedform knobs on sale for $25. I love it. It's just a little bit larger which fits my hands better. The pattern is engraved so it won't wear off like the cheapo eBay knobs that are just printed on. Saved a bunch of money that can go towards other upgrades. My Sync 3 upgrade also showed up. Now I just need a warm weekend to install it along with the new door speakers I've had sitting in the corner for a month

I've always disliked linear switches. I recently tried some newer options and results are in... They still suck

EXTREMEHW Foldathon November 24-26 UTC (3 DAYS!)
Fluxmaven replied to firedfly's topic in Folding@Home
Howdy, I have the stickers ready to go. I will try to get them packed up and ready to mail out this weekend if I hear back from all the winners. These are just a reprint of the ones I gave away last year. Last time I had two sizes. This time I just did the smaller size since that's what most people preferred. -
Thanks. I actually forgot I ordered the colored mods Went to check my emails for the order info and came across this gem from a week ago So yay another delayed group buy. Still not as bad as the RAMA Kara seq 2 stuff I ordered 2 years ago that are just now scheduled ETA of May. This type of BS is why I drifted away from building mechs. Pay hundreds of dollars to wait forever for stuff. Especially nowadays where I can buy boards off the shelf that have most of the unique features or form factors that used to be exclusive to custom boards.

All switches have 2 signal pins. The 3 pin and 5 pin is referring to the physical pins that stabilize the switch. So in a 3 pin it just has the center stabilizer pin. On a 5 pin it adds two additional stabilizing pins. In the past I've used flush cutters to snip off the extra pins to make a 5 pin switch fit a board that only supported 3 pin.

EXTREMEHW Foldathon November 24-26 UTC (3 DAYS!)
Fluxmaven replied to firedfly's topic in Folding@Home
So I just switched a few rigs back over to EHW from LTT. Was checking the stats and realized I finally hit a few milestones. top 1k, and over 3 billion points. After our event I plan to swap back to LTT to finish out their month of folding challenge. Then I'll be back to EHW full time. It's wild to think about how much more PPD newer hardware puts out and how much more points the WUs are worth. The measly 500k I folded with no team was over a decade ago just doing on idle CPU folding and I don't remember how long I did that but it was probably over a year to hit that. Comparing LTT vs OCN it's interesting because in just a couple weeks I well surpassed over a year of participating in the monthly foldathons at OCN. So I just came home for a few hours between flights to pet my kitties, do a load of laundry, and take a quick nap before getting on another plane. I've got a couple rigs folding but I won't be around to do any last second shenanigans slapping extra rigs together to slip by anybody at the end this month. Good luck, have fun. Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels for those that applies to. -
The lack of Android Auto in the mustang is the only thing about the car that's been annoying me. Adding it myself is still a lot cheaper than buying a newer car.

Is the only change to the T-shirts the printing method? I have one of the originals and it seems a bit flimsy. I'd love to see a heavyweight shirt at some point.

I'll be out of town the entire event but I'll leave a card or two folding -
I've never had him in my car... But I did ride in his car. I don't remember what it smelled like before, but it definitely smelled like a pile of sweaty bros and beer farts afterward

Amateur Review: Lepy LP-838 2.1 Bluetooth Amplifier
Fluxmaven replied to pio's topic in Amateur Reviews
That's a shame it turned out to be junk. A little amp with a sub channel is a lot less common. I actually just swapped out my SMSL mini amp in my bedroom. That amp is fine but didn't have a sub output and I wanted to simplify my remote setup. Originally had a nice Logitech Harmony but I accidentally washed it with the sheets. I decided to swap to one of my Denon receivers which is overkill for just 2 channels and sub out. But the TV can control it over ARC so I can just use the TV remote for everything. -
Got signed up. I can spare a card or two for the event. I'll swap back whenever our next foldathon happens

It's actually a Marchal logo. Since it's a race sim I was going to cover it with vintage motorsports sponsorship logos.
-
So it's been a while since I updated this. My roommate decided maybe we should stop being nerds and have a more "normal" main living room so He'll just pull his sim rig out when he wants to use it and mine migrated upstairs to the home theater. Doesn't look like I ever mentioned it but I added a Simagic TB-1 Handbrake a while ago. I've had a 3080 Ti and a nice Aquacomputer block for it for a long time... Probably around a year now Finally put the block on and swapped it into the PC. I also swapped in a spicy kit of Trident Z Royal 4800cl17 in the beautifully tacky Nigerian prince gold. I managed to order the correct "extended" block but the standard length backplate But it works good and now the sim rig is complete until I get the itch to upgrade the whole cockpit/frame since drunk me tends to bend the bracket the handbrake is mounted on. If I actually start using it more I might pick up the direct drive wheel base but I'd rather dump money in my real cars before spending any more on this.
-
The 4090 rig is upstairs so I assume he just doesn't leave it running all the time to not bother his wife with the fans and LEDs. I on the other hand can create a beautiful hellscape with way too many cards running in way to small of room. A little over 80f in the office currently I put the block on the 3080ti and got some distilled to leak test, but then ran out of motivation.
-
-
Fine I will lol I have the 4070 Ti, 2080 and one 3090 up now. I've got a new waterblock that's been mocking me for months for the 3080ti so I'll try and get that installed, leak checked, and folding tomorrow. The other 3090s have been busy rendering lately but I might be able to spin those up for a few hours as well

A delightfully cursed solution to poor chipset placement
Fluxmaven replied to CassieDragon's topic in Air Coolers
I'm a total slut for watercooling. It's appealing for a combination of added performance, silence, and aesthetics. I do however understand that it's a terrible investment for most people. I also focus on actual performance and use big external rads and soft tubing. Not the bare minimum rad space in an airflow choked glass fishbowl of a case. I miss how much more unique builds used to be when people just had to engineer their own solutions. I also totally hear you on the motherboard cost creep. It seems like you're either stuck with bottom of the barrel junk or ultra premium. Not a lot of good stuff falls in the affordable middle of the road range. I like having high end boards (even though I'm a noob overclocker) but I don't really like paying for stuff I'll never use like Thunderbolt, USB DAC's, daughterboards for a gazillion M.2 drives etc.
