Huge grain of salt but it sounds believable that Nvidia would go balls to the wall with RT and not really focus on power consumption at least until RT is more viable to use.

Agree with the above, but that also would mean if true that there's technically no performance uplift watt for watt. If you halved the power draw of this theoretical 4080 to what the 3080 draws, is it just a 3080 at that point?

 

I'll wait till we see more concrete stuff.

Double is a bit much. Everyone's going to need new Power Supplies again.⚡I think double the performance and power makes sense on the top tier cards though. Many would welcome that fps boost, and you can always power limit if it's a big concern, but doing the same doubling on the lower end models seems a bit tragic for those on tight budgets. I'm pretty excited with the potential for double performance. Maybe we'll see 240hz 4k in this generation. 🤔

Typically no, but double what it is now will necessitate rebuying PSU's again. It's excessive when you figure some 3090s can draw close to 500W. Are we really saying next cards are double that? I don't think so.

Who exactly will need new PSU's again and what are we thinking the pricing will be on these new units? I don't own any PSU's <1000w. Personally I don't see the difference in running NVlink cards or a new ONE of the newer cards. We always speculate on the TOP tier when these card talks happen and then forget we are talking about ENTHUSIAST level cards. I don't believe a 4060 is going to require 500w. Enthusiasts, which is what all of us are here should be more than capable of handling the wattage and price tag IF we desire whatever comes next.  

 

And no, I don't think we'll see a 1Kw power requirement on a 4090, unless some idiot wants a 1Kw bios (Most will).

A lot of enthusiasts have 1Kw + PSU's,  so from a standpoint of having to upgrade PSU to handle the next 4080/4090 I do not think many will need to.  

 

I think Nvidia's goal is too really push RT hard, at the expense of the power envelope which is a shame to be honest. More powerful so far as performance does not have to come at a huge expense of power draw. I would prefer to see additional optimization of the process for the next gen over chugging it full of power and throw in some extra RT and Cuda cores. 

 

Im not upgrading anyway due to the fact my 3090 is more than fine and frankly the prices will be mental again.

Eh. Fair, but a lot of us not on the cutting edge run 650-850W for years. Having to say now go to a 1500w PSU would be redonculous. Hell I'd say that would be ridiculous for anything below the 90 class card. If an 850W can't handle a 70 or 80 class card in the future, I'd say they are going the wrong direction with how they are developing this stuff.

 

From an enthusiast standpoint, you are right. But more and more people are increasingly priced out of that stage at this point.

That's exactly what I am saying.

 

Personally I don't buy that this is a true rumor. If it's double the performance of Ampere but with double the power draw, that's literally no uplift watt per watt. And secondly, early rumors always try to paint things as "2X this, 3X that" and we all know that's not reality these days. The last time we had a literal doubling of performance (for same tier cards/chips - i.e. flagship to flagship) was probably going from the GTX 580 to the GTX 780 Ti, and close again going from the 980 Ti to the 1080 Ti.

I put ZERO stock in a 2x performance uplift, let alone a 3x. Unless they found some magic process or really are going to dump literally 100% extra power draw on the 4000 series...its not happening. If they did decide to just bang up the power drawer for the sake of keeping the performance crown....they can keep it.
