Yeah, it only works under select circumstances (and only on Asus CH) for the Ryzen 3k series - it is actually counterproductive on Ryzen 5k, at least when I compare my Ryzen 3k with my 5k.

 

I would focus on your heat generation issue (180W) for improvements.

180 watts was just for suicide runs. That was the 3800X at 4.5GHz across all cores at 1.525v. That was an aVX workload. 

 

Daily driving with my OC it hovers in the 120w range.

...good, because 180W peak is what my 3950X 16c/32t uses for 27280 in CinebenchR23 which uses the regular AVX. 5950X records 260W peak for 32311 (see earlier posts).

I still prefer doing more with more, versus more with less. More watts is MOAR better. I still miss seeing 1.2kW+ getting sucked from the wall with my 7980XE in Cinebench. Fun times. I probably should upload one of my 3090 KPE with the XOC vBIOS pulling 1100W+ in 3DMark 11.

No doubt. It is true, the better achievement is more with more (I do live by the hard and fast rule that there is no replacement for displacement)

 

EDIT: But I also like selecting a specific CPU and trying to compete with others who have the same chip, for frequency, overclocking, etc (regardless of cores, it's just fun for me)

 

That's why I have 36C/72T HP Z840 workstation coming to the table soon. Technology is a little old but sixteen module, octal channel 2400MHz DDR4 across two CPUs should generate some substantial bandwidth and good results in some benchmarks. I think the CPUs can be turbo hacked and are water cooled from the factory.  I will be using two 18C/36T Xeon E5 2696 V3 processors. These are 145 w TDP each and have a single core turbo of 3.8GHz. Also going with the 1125W PSU.... (its also a tool less design)

Best I can do right now is:

I know, it's a puny 214W. But it's the best I can muster (right now) (cpu wise), locked down, each processor is limited to 110w. (2x 2673 v2 OEM xeons) 16 core / 32 thread in total. 4GHz single core turbo / 3.6GHz all core. Basically the OEM equivalent of the 2667 v2, with 10 watts less power usage but same turbo specs.

Good timing because Im getting the 9600KF rig back in line today. So I will sign up today.

 

Also ordered the reminder of my z840 system today, another good thing. Total spent was under $1000 including everything I need. 

 

Old Z820 did 100Gb/s r/w/c with 8 channel ddr3, so this should be substantially higher. Thinking if I can turbo hack, I might need to add another radiator to the system but it's very easy to modify, interestingly enough. We will see tho. 

 

The CPUs only cost about $150 per. So I am getting much better value for my money than mainstream retail market, in the sense that I should get at least 5950X performance for a lot less, also lucked out and found two grade A chips which appear to have never been used. They are fresh at the very least. Only other source on eBay is typical hard used grade C. with scratches

The nice thing about benching obsolete hardware is you can often swoop in and steal rank from people that previously set high scores when the hardware was current after it is too late for them to return and try harder because they no longer own the hardware and can't re-enter the competition. It is like playing the role of a sniper. Just patiently waiting in the shadows until the opportunity for a stealth headshot surfaces. Nobody sees you and the moment they let their guard down *BAM* ...game over.

You called it. Also note the same logic can be used in eBay bidding theory. Never bid, you are only jacking the price up on yourself. Snipe it I usually count down the seconds and win BC I pull the trigger a few seconds before the auction ends, and by then it's too late for them because they don't see the bid until it's submitted.

I do not agree, DDR4 is still a very capable platform, especially when running 8 channels. It will smoke any retail DDR5 kit up until this point. 

 

I will say that new hardware is pushed on us like we need it, or we need it to bench to stay on top. Neither points are true. Especially because these processors are in the not so distant past, I can just simply double up on them in a dual processor configuration to gain back the performance losses. With the turbo hack, I should be able to go further as well.

 

Heck even my 2969 v2 z820 does (DDR3) 100GB/s in R/W/C in terms of memory bandwidth. That's far better than you will see than with the latest and greatest quad channel 6000-6400MHz DDR5 configuration.

I will check this out,👍 probably the best way to go about winning auctions with confidence, however, I do like the adrenaline rush of bidding at the last second. It's a thrill and I'm an adrenalin junky.

I am more than willing to forego the experience of "playing" the auction game. For me, it's all about getting what I want at reasonable if not lower price, then moving on. That's what gives me the boost of adrenaline. I have never used Auction Sniper, but I almost never bid on anything. I most typically use the "make an offer" and "buy it now" and purchase when the price is right because I don't like waiting for however long the auction is scheduled to run. Most sellers know what they have is worth and if it is overpriced just to see if a sucker is dumb enough to grab it at full asking price without thinking they will often accept a reasonable offer.

I also like to target unique CPUs, chips that are rare or non mainstream, OEM, also combining server chips to be first for a dual processor configuration with that particular CPU.

 

OEM chips are actually better in some cases than their retail counterparts (at least in the E5-2600 family). They generally have a higher turbo and use less wattage doing it. For example, my OEM 2673 v2 comes in at 110W vs it's retail counterpart, the 2667 v2, which comes in at 10 watts higher but has identical turbo specs.

Anyway I can link my pre-existing storm-chaser account, it's forcing me to sign in with google or facebook which I don't want. I dont want to create a new HWBOT account if at all possible.
