Meta says it may be forced to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe

A new EU law requires companies that gather user data within the union to keep and process that data on European servers. Facebook's and Instagram's data, however, is processed on both US and European servers, which is crucial for ad targeting and businesses that operate on those social platforms.

Don't threaten me with a good time then not do it.

In all likelihood, I don't think they'd shut down their services in the EU. This is just an empty threat to get people on their side to go against this new law. Whatsapp is to Europe what iMessage is to the US.

Yeah I call BS on this. No way are they going to shoot themselves in the foot. I agree, this is more of a power move.

If they did shut down in the EU that would be great news for the EU.

It might force people to go outside.  Gasp!  Shock!  :lachen:

We can only hope that would happen.  Too many people with their noses glued in their phones all day.

I do not agree with Meta's tactics at all, that being said could I live without Facebook, yes. Would I want to, not particularly and the ONLY reason is my contacts and for business reasons. Not having an FB presence both professionally and personally would make things more difficult for day to day.

While it doesn't make it right, if Facebook wasn't doing questionable things with data, someone else would. The price you pay for using a "Free" platform.

User data farming I do not agree with. That is why EHW has the least operationally possible data collection on users and that is an aim of mine to continue.
