Windows 11 was only released a couple of months ago, but Microsoft is already planning to begin work on the next version of its omnipresent OS fairly soon, according to at least two independent reports.

The first comes from German Windows news outlet Deskmodder.de, whose sources have claimed that Microsoft will begin the development of Windows 12 in March. According to Deskmodder, Microsoft had been busy reshuffling its teams and seeking the right employees for the project, one that is now presumably ready to fulfill its duty in bringing the next generation of Windows to life.

Looks like Windows 12 will be the one that will be a subscription service, or at the very least, introduce it as the preferable option. All recent moves seem to indicate this to being the case.

Im still 50/50. I think they wouldn't hesitate to put certain features behind a paywall but I do not think they will make the entire OS subscription based as it would tank so hard. Nobody, well some would, but most would not put up with that.

I'll just leave this forbes article here from 2015, where Microsoft stated that 10 was "the last version of Windows", and that the future of Windows might be open source they claimed.  Gee, almost as if they lied.......

Is this really the end for Windows? Like we know it, yes...

Was wondering what possible reason they could have to be working on this so soon but reading the article it sounds like 12 will be a new starting point that ditches legacy code. I'd guess their starting so soon to get a jump on planning what the new code will look like and how developers will work with it.
