AMD Teases Second-Gen Upscaling Graphics Tech Reveal At GDC, Possibly FSR 2.0

Raster graphics rendering at regular resolutions 8-megapixels-and-below is basically a solved problem with modern GPUs. Despite all the hullaballoo surrounding the search for "single-card 4K," you don't even need a GeForce RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 6800 XT to run games in 3840×2160 with good performance. Heck, NVIDIA even advertised the RTX 3090 with 7680×4320 8K UHD benchmarks. That's some 33 megapixels

Not saying that I actually LIKE the tech, but it is useful.  I can manage "Ultra" in Cyberpunk 2077 on my sig rig at 5120x1440 if I use FSR on Performance mode.  Otherwise I can barely squeak by on "low" settings with FSR disabled.  Both options look like poo though.  It does seem like Nvidia is slightly ahead in this endeavor right now with their DLSS though, image quality seems to be much better over FSR.

Regardless of "future tech" purposes with this technology, its useful as is to get playable frames on modern games with budget friendly GPU's in today's GPU market.

So...is FSR2.0 incorporated into RSR?  I'll watch it again when I have time, but I got the impression that RSR will initially be equivalent to FSR1.0, but integrated down at the driver level, as to be of benefit in a far greater range of titles.  Regardless, I'll be eager to see what Tim @ Hardware Unboxed has to say about it.

RSR is basically FSR 1.0 but at a driver level so it can be applied universally to any game. The downside to this approach is that unlike FSR, RSR will affect the UI with its scaling.

FSR 2.0 will be a new and improved version of FSR that looks to be more in line with DLSS and the upcoming Intel XeSS. FSR 1.0 has no temporal component to it, but 2.0 will add that as well as other enhancements. I would guess FSR 2.0 will be much better than 1.0 while still not fully on par with DLSS, though probably close enough that the difference will be irrelevant to most gamers, and I believe FSR 2.0 will be no harder to implement in games than 1.0 from the sound of it.

From what I understand about DLSS, though Nvidia talks it up a lot I don't think it's really doing anything that other modern GPUs couldn't do so it will be interesting to see what AMD can achieve without the AI cores that Nvidia likes to emphasize as so crucial to the process.

Another "preview".  They usually do a pretty good job of testing/comparing these features when they are released.

I am annoyed that AMD is leaving Vega and Polaris owners in the dark on RSR. Like I figured we would get it by default since it is "powered" by FSR1.0 and FSR1.0 is supported on Vega and Polaris.

Made this quick video to try our RSR in a game that has no FSR. Looks pretty good IMO.
