Mobile Router that allows the disabling of radio(wireless) and connect direct to ethernet ?

Hello

 

Are there any mobile routers, 3g or 4g, that allow us to disable wireless radio connectivity (disable WiFi) and connect to the hotspot via ethernet connection.

 

I know alot of the newer huawei 4g and ee 4gee routers have ethernet ports, but I have been unable to disable the wifi radio on my Huawei ZTE MF286D 4G router... I havnt yet tested EE's alcatel 4gee

Hi and welcome to the forums. I am not quite understanding what you are asking for here. Most wireless routers have default IP addresses that can be logged into with admin permissions. Once there, you should be able to turn on/off wifi. It sounds like you are looking for a non-wireless router?

 

I do not know for certain, but there have to be "Hotspots" with ethernet ports on them. It's just a matter of searching for them.

Hi avacado, you understood correctly, It isnt the case that ethernet port = option to disable WiFi.

 

The new Huawei ZTE MF286D 4G router doesnt contain such an option to disable WiFi in the admin panel.

 

I have heard the Netgear MR1100 does allow disabling WiFi radio, the shame is that its £200... I was looking to spend <£80

I would highly recommend searching for "4G Draytek". You can pick these routers up within your budget and you can certainly disable wifi and have 4G internet via ethernet only.

I know there's devices made by "Mofi" that are supposedly fantastic for the uses you're looking for.  Actually just bought one myself to try out.  But yeah, they're spendy.  When I was doing my LTE research, that seemed to be the ones that kept popping up for recommended use, so that's what I bought lol.

 

The problem being that I ran into, these "mobile hotspot" router devices are typically used for enterprise type applications.  Businesses will typically use these types of devices for their backup internet source quite often, or their only internet source for things like buses and boats that have wifi.  Because of their typical use scenarios, they're generally more expensive than consumer equipment.

There's a Netgear device that I was also reading about that was more in the consumer market price range.  That might be something to look into.  I'm not sure how well coverage will be with your carrier, or if your carrier will even work with the Netgear.  That seems to be hit and miss between devices and carriers.

 

If you're looking for 5g access, unfortunately you're going to be looking at a Mofi device in the $500 range (from what I had read about anyway, your own research may vary).  If LTE is sufficient, I'd research the Netgear further.
