New benchmark results for Intel’s upcoming 56-core Sapphire Rapids Xeon Platinum 8470 have surfaced online, showing impressive performance from Intel's new Sapphire Rapids architecture. As shared by Twitter leaker @yuuki_ans, the new Xeon was able to outperform AMD’s 64 Core Threadripper 3990X in a multitude of benchmarks including Cinebench R15, R20, R23, CPU-Z, and V-Ray.

 

 

As usual, note that these results are not official, so take them with a grain of salt. Sapphire Rapids is still in development, so performance is subject to change before release.

It looks to be a great competitor to AMD's newer 5000WX CPUs and Milan-X.

*Sigh. I'll be looking for these used on ebay to torture in a decade. Though if I ever win the lottery, everyone on this site is getting a new rig.

Took Intel a long time to get ahead of the 3990X. With the exception of CPUz, it looks like its just barely ahead too.

Aye, I'm not a Threadripper user, but I try to follow the news in that segment anyway.  I may be mistaken, but I would assume AMD can leapfrog this anytime they wish given how long it has taken Intel to "catch up".

Maybe, maybe not. Intel has been out of the HEDT space for awhile. The 3990x Is a 64 core chip. Losing in some benchmarks with 8/16 cores/threads more.

 

I was under the assumption that they had a dual socket board in the works for the next gen TR's though. 128 cores. That would be nasty and more than a down payment on a large house.

I believe AMD Genoa is 96 cores and is coming out at the end of the year. And they have a 128core cloud cpu coming out in the first half of next year. But their new 3D stacked epyc should be here before sapphire rapids. However it probably wont beat sapphire rapids. But it is good to see competition is heating up.

The 3990X is a consumer model that came out over two years ago and still uses the Ryzen 3K instead of Ryzen 5K cores...it is also limited to 4 RAM channels instead of 8 the AMD Epyc model (w/ Ryzen 5K cores for a year) has which would be the counterparts to the Xeon...never mind the new Milan-X with 64 cores and 3D cache (think 8x 5800X3D under one IHS). It may not be the best Cinebench performer due to clocks, but in many other professional-apps benchmarks, it seems out of this world - never mind the upcoming new Epycs with Genoa cores...

 

As Sapphire Rapids is not even available yet (!), I rather wait for a head-to-head of the top Xeon Sapphire Rapdis vs the top Epyc Genoa when both are out and available - a true apples-to-apples comparison...instead of clickbait

I imagine most of that performance lead evaporates against a 5995WX.  IPC improvement of Zen 2 to Zen 3 is somewhere around 19% plus the higher stock clocks on a 5995WX. 

 

The real question is how Sapphire Rapids Xeons will compare to current Milan-X CPUs and the Zen 4 Genoa chips.  Depending on the workload, a 7773X is a pretty nice improvement over a 7763 (especially for a mid-process refresh), to say nothing of the upcoming Genoa chips and it's rumored monster L2 cache and 20% performance improvement.

Maybe folding@home. No idea how they perform at folding.
