You guys will NEVER guess what I found tonight helping an old friend.  I'll give you a hint, I'll be uploading them all to the internet archives hopefully in the next few weeks.  I now have a flat out NEED to build a retro rig that can read CD's because a low speed drive is going to be imperative, like seriously I'll want to try to locate like a 1x or 2x CD reader if I can from the early 90's, just so I can rip all of these gently.

I FOUND MY OLD ABSOLUTELY FULL CD WALLET OF OLD CD SOFTWARE!!!! :wheee:

Yes, some of them are copies, but 99.9% of it was all legitimately bought software of mine from back in Windows 98 till early EARLY first edition Windows XP.  I just thought it was absolutely awesome and had to share.

Software and Games list in this wallet:

Spoiler

CD's marked with (OEM) are original OEM discs.  If not marked, assume its a copy of an original disc.  These will be uploaded to the archives once I source a drive that'll read these slow enough so they don't disintegrate inside the drive.  Some of these discs are definitely lost causes due to mold problems and well, they're 20 years old.  These were all circa 2002 when this wallet was made.  For OS's, assume no service packs unless otherwise noted.

Did you save your 20 year old coasters?  Because I didn't! :lachen:

C'mon, we all knew AOL was trash even back then in the 1990's.  I'm surprised I didn't have a Netzero CD in there though.  Probably one of the few missing discs, I noticed there was blank areas that probably weren't blank originally.

Naw, threw out the box of random assorted trash disks a few years back. Somehow a couple of AOL disks were in there, not really sure why as we never used AOL.

I'm curious if my "People PC Online" disc would still work though.  I have a home phone line.  People PC Online is just old version of "Earthlink" which is still active today.

Now I am curious. 🤔

You can bet on it once I get my K6 rig running properly, I'm going to try..... :lachen:

I actually WANT to create a dial up network system between a buddy of mine and me to play old games over dial up LAN.

Like, this is so exciting finding this stuff lol.  This means I have ALL of the software here to make a Win98 or 95, or even a DOS rig, and have it fully functional.  Including Winamp for music (which I still use mp3's today).  And tons of games that'll work.

  Reveal hidden contents

CD's marked with (OEM) are original OEM discs.  If not marked, assume its a copy of an original disc.  These will be uploaded to the archives once I source a drive that'll read these slow enough so they don't disintegrate inside the drive.  Some of these discs are definitely lost causes due to mold problems and well, they're 20 years old.  These were all circa 2002 when this wallet was made.  For OS's, assume no service packs unless otherwise noted.

...thanks @pioneerisloud! --- great reminder that I needed to pay a visit to the storeroom ('some say it's haunted')...found three big albums / wallets containing some of my old stuff and that of older siblings. I do have a retro gamer and am already enjoying my all-time fav - MDK and MDK 2, along with Duke Nukem 3D and Terminal Velocity 😁

I'll have to test that soon, I found Midtown Madness Chicago. :wheee:

I'll have to write a list of all of these down tomorrow lol.

Midtown Madness, Monster Truck Madness and Motocross Madness were among the games that spent many hours entertaining my 5 kids. In fact, just last week one of my sons mentioned how much fun those three were and the good memories he had of the family playing them. He specifically remember ramming houses with a monster truck and everyone giggled about the old man voice yelling "hey you kids, get off my lawn!!" LoL

Anyone else have memories of spending hours on dial-up, braving sketchy web sites hunting for No-CD cracks and trainers so you could leave your CDs in their jewel case? Little kids were murderers of CDs.

The kids had a knack for scratching them up. My custom builds always had two optical drives so I could burn disposable  "working" copies of new discs using Nero and Slysoft AnyDVD and CloneCD/DVD on the DRM-protected discs. That way the originals stayed like new.

My kids felt lucky. Each had their own custom desktop PC built by daddy on the 6-computer home network. Laptops were rare back then. They cost a small fortune and were generally used exclusively for business. Laptops back then were beige putty colored like most desktops and monitors, and many had a built-in trackball, before touchpads were invented.

We spent many weekends "killing" one another in frag matches in Quake II, Unreal Tournament, Arena, etc. They cut their teeth playing QBasic Nibbles and Bananas using a CRT display and MS-DOS, (I think before Windows was invented, although my memory of that is a bit foggy now,) but that quickly morphed into Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom back when Apogee/id software were brand new companies at the forefront of PC gaming. Everything then was on 3.5 inch floppy disks and optical drives were brand new tech that almost nobody owned yet.

I would have loved to have that as a kid. Luckily I had a friends who's father was in IT. I would go over all the time and he would let me take apart his 386/486 machines while his own son played with nerf guns outside.

I can remember being excited about my first VGA monitor and being stoked about upgrading from an 8088 CPU to a 486SX. It took me a long time to embrace Windows. Real men used DOS. Windows was for wusses and Mac-lovers.

Edit: I also remember adding a math coprocessor as an upgrade to speed things up... And, there was a company called Evergreen Technologies that sold AMD CPU upgrades with an adapter for the CPU socket to fit an AMD K5 100MHz (yes, 100, and 1 core/1 thread "upgrade" kit) processor onto an Intel mobo. That was long before the internet was invented, LOL.

Later came the 200MHz bombshell upgrade to end all upgrades. 🙂

I remember a girlfriend upgrading my first computer for me, she put Windows 98SE on it from win 95, and upgraded the memory from 8Mb to 32Mb. All on a 1Gb hdd. Oh, and I met her on dial up internet on my dial up aol.com acct. 🤣  We didn't even have DSL in our area then. lol, I even remember having to change out the modem in the comp and adding a 56k pci card.

Remember how depressed you got when you logged in after singing along to the dial-up connection sounds and not hearing "You've got mail"?
