I remember a girlfriend upgrading my first computer for me, she put Windows 98SE on it from win 95, and upgraded the memory from 8Mb to 32Mb. All on a 1Gb hdd. Oh, and I met her on dial up internet on my dial up aol.com acct. 🤣  We didn't even have DSL in our area then. lol, I even remember having to change out the modem in the comp and adding a 56k pci card.

I can remember saving my money to upgrade from a 14K modem to 56K. Rich people and some businesses had a T1 line if they lived in an area that supported data transmission rates "that fast" LOL. I remember swiping a credit card in a store and waiting for the cash register modem to dial up to complete the transaction.

Remember how depressed you got when you logged in after singing along to the dial-up connection sounds and not hearing "You've got mail"?

lol, I remember wrapping the modem in a sock to muffle the squeal so it wouldn't wake my sister who had to work the next day when I'd log on at 11-12 at night to chat with my girlfriend. 🤣

Indeed. I do remember being disappointed that I had no email. Now I am disappointed about how much email I get. And, 99% of it is unsolicited crap that I wish I didn't get. My how things change.  One might say that you can get too much of a good thing, but in the case of email it is generally too much of a bad thing.

ironically after 17 years i created a new email address yesterday for this exact reason. all the crap i signed up for as a teenager spams my inbox to this day.

with the exception of Coke Music, RIP my friend you consumed me as a teenager.

modem wise, the only thing that used to annoy every one of us, guranteed was when mom picked up the phone in the kitchen to kick you offline so youd come downstairs for dinner.

Ask Alexa. She can tell you if your fruits and vegetables are clean.

Best way to be sure is to shower daily, using soap and water.

The "call waiting" feature would kick me off.  This is before the internet....I would be on a BBS that I probably redialed over and over again in what felt like an eternity until I didn't get a busy signal...Then I see 094321q5ujloikjsddfa;lhasdp98p790834hjl56kaslkjdfhasd980fjhol34.  I hear a click and then the phone would ring. 🤬

The mp3's...that's nothing.  At 2400 baud it would take 30 mins to download a 300k file.

I remember the days you'd get an AOL sample/starter CD in the mail.
I tossed them and kept the CD case for other things, I may have one of those old disks from back then around.... Probrably not but it's possible.

I still have most all I'd need to build a retro-machine around here and may have to do that one day, biggest thing is I need a case and a decent PSU for it.
I have all else required to do it and can easily build a Socket A now if I had the others things I listed so maybe.... One day I'll get it done.

Have a rare XP-M 3000+ chip onhand (Also have a XP-M 2800+ and a XP-M 2500+) with all the DDR I'll ever need, ready to go right now.
I Could base it on an Abit AN7 or NF7/NF7-S if I want or even a Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0, have all of that here - I even have an unmodified DFI NF2 Ultra B in the box I could use if I really wanted to.

Water blocks, good air coolers..... Chipset coolers.... Periphials..... CD drives..... Yep, I've still got all that too.

To create the "Ultimate" Socket A gaming rig I'd still need to find an ATI 3850 AGP card to round it all out but I do have a couple of decent AGP cards onhand at least.

If anyone has "Jane's WWII Fighters" we could fly it online, I used to create custom missions for the forum based on it long ago and can do it on a dime even now if I had to.
