Ridiculous things we run across online that people buy....

Recommended Posts

I'll start with something I ran across today since I'm starting this post,I hope everyone else also contributes things to make us laugh at what people buy....

This Large WiFi Router Guard Cover (Blocks About 90% of WiFi Router EMF While You can Still use The Router) Blocks 5G! (lol) was obviously thought up to cater to the paranoia over the 5G towers and is actually selling some. according to a couple of dissatisfied commenters it's actually made from a metal wire paper holder and a sheet metal base.🙄 the list price is $89 and change PLUS shipping.

Source that led me to this wonder of modern science was FaceBook.... 🤣

Those WiFi blockers actually do have a use in some industries. I know there are routers out there that if you switch WiFi off in the settings, it doesn't actually switch off. The only way to "switch it off " is with those Faraday cages.

One thing that I have seen that is actually ridiculous is those 5G blocking USB drives.

What they are, is a 1GB (sometimes 512MB) flash drive with a fancy case and hologram sticker on it. You can buy these ready made on Alibaba for $4.99 each if you're buying up to 499 of them, or $3.22 each if you're buying up to 4999 of them.

image.png.3ec3fe8376cc1ca8bf4ef7c900f79ccc.png

One prominent "company" selling these $350 each so they only needed to sell 7 of them to get into the profits assuming they bought 450 of these

image.png.0c03134e7397f2483c41cb67ae5793d0.png

Here's the one they're selling for $350. As you can see, it's identical to the Alibaba one but with their "company" logo engraved onto it, which the Alibaba seller will do for no extra charge.

It's supposed to work by

Quote

Transmuting and harmonising all harmful frequencies into life affirming frequencies and reducing the intensity of 5G radiation by using the nanolayer shield [the hologram sticker on it].

But then on the same page it also says

Quote

It does not reduce radio frequencies, it balances them.

These apparently sold very well in 2020. Like to a point where trading standards had to step in and said people are being ripped off with these and gave an alternative link for where you can buy the identical flash drives for 1/10th of the price that these are selling for. This is something that rarely happens, and in this case when it did happen, it made the kinds of people who believe this stuff believe it even more.

Also the entire "audiophile grade" level audio equipment as well as computer mice garbage. One of the best things I've seen is a $80 gold plated S/PDIF cable with low dispersion high purity fibre core with carbon insulation to reduce electromagnetic interference. The computer mice thing I'm talking about are things to reduce latency. None of those things do anything. You're just spending $60-$120 on magnets to put on your mouse cable for a placebo. Just admit you're bad at FPS games and that a pro with a generic Microsoft office mouse will be able to beat you at any FPS game, no matter what mouse setup you have.

Well considering the site that's selling them....along with Aliexpress....it's a given that it's useless junk.

Dude......  Beldon 5T00UP is $2.25 per foot at Blue Jeans.

Parts Express sells the same stuff for $1.79 / foot, or $143 for 100ft of it.

Belden 5T00UP 10 AWG 2C Cable Hi-Flex In-Wall Speaker Wire CL2 Per ft. USA. Part Number: 102-1190 by Belden.

You're paying more just to buy it from a snake oil salesman at Blue Jeans.  They make their money off selling their "ultra sonic welding" and their "color print out sheets".  There's been people that have paid thousands of dollars for cables at that company, and had absolutely zero discernable difference from regular lamp cord.  They're just as bad or worse than monster cable.

You can even buy the stuff cheaper than Blue Jeans on Amazon.....

Note the description:  "We can cut to any length"

https://www.amazon.com/Belden-5T00UP-Cable-Hi-Flex-Speaker/dp/B00CWEND4C

I will admit, that they're not AS BAD when looking at their raw materials though.  But their assembled cables, a lot of them (not all) are absolute snake oil.

Now a days their prices are a little high...but it's a husband and wife run company that probably doesn't sell in large volume.  Back when I bought from them, Amazon wasn't what it is today.

I don't like the ultra sonic welding thing...but other than that there is no other market jargon or what I would consider snake oil. They list what brand of wire they are using and where it's made.

To be fair, the REALLY bad offender I was originally thinking of when I ran into Blue Jeans was "Coconut Audio".  Website's gone now, but back in the day that troll really did have a fully functioning checkout system.  Not sure how many people fell for the scam.  I remember banning Patrick off OCN several times for trying to sell his garbage.  I mistakenly thought it was Blue Jeans. 🙂  Could've sworn Blue Jeans was spamming OCN at one point too, but I could be wrong its been years.

Again, they're not THAT bad, but they're far more expensive than cables really should cost if somebody shops around.  Just like Monster.  Idk, I usually default to Parts Express and Monoprice usually.  Amazon basics too.  Copper wire is copper wire. *shrugs  Obviously analogue wires require certain things in certain scenarios, but yeah.

Back in the day Blue Jeans was recommended by Audioholic's for being snake oil free.  That's where I heard of Blue Jeans...I used to visit that site everyday....I bought my Ascend Acoustics Sierra 1's because of that site.

Change is inevitable, even as far as Blue Jeans go. These days, it seems more and more like they're dropping around many a person's ankles.

Rhetorically speaking, of course 😉

I was given the Furbo dog cam, from that list, for christmas.  I've never taken it out of the box.  Hell if I'm going to set up a spying device in my house.

I just caught that list, wow....... :lachen:  A smart toothbrush, floss, an easy bake oven for adults (isn't that called a regular oven?), and a smart condom and wine bottle?  Seriously, people need to put the screens down more and go outside.  If you need to order yourself a new bottle of wine without putting down the one in your hand, I think its time to admit there's a problem........ 🤣

I don't blame you on the dog cam, seems creepy too.  I don't like the fact that I have smart phones in the house myself even, but I can't deny their usefulness either though sadly.
