Google to close Stadia cloud service and refund gamers

Stadia was touted as a "Netflix for games" when it launched in November 2019, allowing players to stream games online without owning a console.

But the service will now come to an end on 18 January 2023 because of a lack of "traction" with gamers.

Google has promised refunds to players who purchased its Stadia controller, as well as any games or add-on content.

Not at all surprised.  However they are doing the right thing by refunding users.

their whole thing kinda sucked, but I'm glad they're refunding the subscriptions people got. Gamepass offers cloud streaming of games on certain subscriptions. It's nice because U don't have to download a game onto a limited size drive to play it,it's on their servers and keeps the info there. Edit: Amazon seems to still be hanging in there.... Free trial of the Ubisoft+ channel through Oct.10th if anyone has prime and wants to give it a go. 😉

This is not really surprising. The only thing Google hasn't started and shut down is Google search and Gmail.

Apparently, Google had a bunch of devs on the line with contacts that would pay once they released their games for Stadia, so now any devs that were working on Stadia games expecting to get paid will either be totally screwed on any dev time the put towards Stadia, or they'll have to release their games for a platform they know is about to be shut down. Google didn't tell any devs before-hand, they found out when we did, yet they kept letting them work on projects for Stadia regardless.

Stadia was always such a terribly implemented service. Its swift death was basically guaranteed from day 1.

Yeah that is not ok at all. Devs should.

A. Be paid to date for work

B. Should have been made aware that all dev works should cease. That should have happened latest 24 hours after it was decided the service would be canned.
