Modern computer cases are going to hell

I knew it was bad when RGB hit the market. then the 50lb glass paneling showed up. THEN andre the giant cases started appearing... ones that you need a forklift to move for you... But when they start resembling a rug doctor that's been decked out by what appears to be a 4 year old you have to wonder... have modern computer cases finally damned themselves to computer hell with no chance for redemption?

While what makes a case good is subjective, I feel that the majority of cases are good and sensible. I think the ones where you go "What were you thinking" are mostly the minority.

Don't get me wrong though, there are some whack cases out there.

And they are, this I agree with (that they are sensible in most cases, forgive the pun). Perhaps I am just stuck in the past, but I prefer the "classic" era of cases for some reason. that's why I am ranting, it's just my opinion and like you said, it's very subjective. So I don't hold anything against people who like them, just that I don't like them.

Premium Platinum - Lifetime

Pepperidge Farms remembers the following case (and the earlier versions of it) that came equipped with a phase change cooler (it was like LN2 in a box) --

It'd be neat if they made a current day version of it:

Those ones look like Aliexpress Specials. There's still plenty of good cases out there that look like computer cases and don't have RGB.

My main PC is still in an LD cooling case. Sadly mine is just the LD PC-V7 so just custom watercooling,  no phase change. I used to have a 4790k and the same RAM that was used in this video as well.

Thing is, cases don't REALLY go "out of style".  At least not in my opinion.  ATX standard cases are still ATX standard afterall.  We literally have over 20 years of cases to choose from if you're looking for something that's of a different style.  Don't like the offerings brand new?  Go look for a used case.  Find one that's damaged?  Fix it up, paint's cheap. 🙂

I think classic cases and I think of things like the Antec 300/900. Good times.

But we've definitely moved past the era where stacks of hard drives/cages block the main air intakes. I guess now that's been replaced by radiators for many, but still you get my drift.

To be fair, the main intake probably is a good place to put a radiator.

Yeah, not disagreeing. As long as you have proper static pressure (and power) then should be fine for airflow purposes.

Very funny, I almost LOLd

No, next build will be white. Very under-rated, but I actually prefer white to pretty much every other color, but please don't think I'm racist!

Memory I will be using will be TeamGroup, similar to this:

memory:

1670226939714-png.2586911

Case:

11-853-054-V27.jpg

The cooling system will be upgraded, one 120mm radiator isn't going to cut it. Pretty cool it comes stock with liquid cooling though.

EDIT: @J7SC_Orion

I'm not knocking your case design or systems either. You have quite the unique setup with two computers integrated in one design, I like that, its innovative, rare and aesthetically, very pleasing. and plus u know I like the blue light as well.

Yeah, and I will be the first to admit there are plenty of people that have been at odds with me over my case selections over the years. Bottom line, if you are happy with it, that's all that really matters at the end of the day. TBH the case industry, if you can call it that, has come a long way since just 10 years ago. For a long time is was basically function over form, and now, each individual / builder has literally thousands of selections on tap to choose from to make it their own.

Sadly this case is no longer available, otherwise I would be using it with my next build.

Yep you are absolutely right.

I've only ever criticized how people use their cases. Most perfect example is all the O11-Dynamic based builds you see on r/watercooling and they really don't know how to set it up correctly and then wonder why they have a hot box.

I buy PC cases at least a few times a year. I'm actually pretty impressed with how cheap and competitive that market has become. There are tons of great options for $50 cases now.

Haven't looked at the $50 case market recently, but we had a good time building a rig earlier this year in an H510 Flow case I picked up at Micro Center for I want to say $90. Could have used more front panel I/O, but the designed was overall good and I was impressed with the cable management and overall layout. Was a breeze to build in.

The last PC I built used a $50 case and it was great. I just got another $50 case that I haven't tried yet, but I'm sure it will be great too. Way more good choices than there used to be, you used to have to spend a lot to get the kind of features you'd want in a high end PC like room for liquid cooling and a PSU cover on the bottom, but now that's basically standard. Lots of cases come with fan as well now.

There may be some dumb cases out there, but overall the case market is way better than it used to be.

Case I bought most recently:

Could check out the SUB $50 price range on cases too.  If you're mindful that they're cheap cases (mostly with screws being somewhat easy to strip if you're too aggressive), these cases are absolutely fantastic bang for your buck.

Shop DIYPC Computer Cases on Newegg.com. Watch for amazing deals and get great pricing.

Of course, most of the people on here probably aren't all that interested in such cases.  But hey, if you need a case, can't beat a cheapie with free shipping.  I think I've got 4 or 5 of these cases (various models) in various builds around the house.

I can't hardly stand to browse r/watercooling anymore. Most of the builds are the same overdone crap. When people ask for advice 100 people come out of the woodwork to toss their 2 cents even if they have almost no experience. "buy EK mystic fog, it looks cool. Don't worry about the haters, I've had it in for 2 weeks and my system hasn't blown up yet".

LMAO so true

Man you got that right.

I only sometimes go in there to provide good advice to a post where all the inexperienced "beauty over function" haven't chimed in yet. I even get people that agree sometimes in the replies.

But for the most part, that place is a cesspit where all that's really going on is a bunch of e-peen chasing and "look how pretty it is" over real water cooling.
