  • bonami2 changed the title to Updated Windows now external Hard drive are saying access denied.

Is this denial coming when trying to access the drive as a whole (root directory) or when trying to access data on the drives ?

Are you on Windows 11 (or possibly earlier version, depending on settings) ? ...not sure, but might be worth checking that vaunted TPM.

I assume the drive works just fine on another PC ? Just to be sure, it's not coming up with an I/O error is it ?

Worth a check, though I would be surprised as you have to enrol a drive in TPM.

how are you checking/changing ownership? Windows is dumb, sometimes giving ownership to the drive doesn't give ownership to the partition.

right click on the partition in disk management -> properties -> security -> advanced -> add yourself as the owner there. if you already are, remove yourself and then re-add.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had USB's not show up in windows and had to reformat them using third party software.(They show up there for some reason) I use the free version of EaseUS partition manager to format them and rename them. Then I sometimes have to use Windows disk manager to activate them after it can see them.

Sounds like the file system got damaged somehow. BTW, it likely was still recoverable. R-Studio is an awesome piece of software.
