2nd look at Extreme HW

Following Enterprise's departure from OCN, I figured it's time I take a look around.  OCN really isn't what it used to be.  I really like the news section, and OCN's news section went from great to bad.  There's so many mainstream things that aren't even mentioned anymore.

I looked into ExtremeHW back with the VS take over.  I like to lurk on forums a bit before posting.  The need to register to see if content is worthwhile kept me from joining back then.  It would have again if not for so many OCN members here.  I'd like to see the requirement to register to see posts removed.  I understand it's useful for keeping bots/AI from scraping all our data, but I think this change should happen once the site has a lot of members, not from the beginning.  OCN was great because I could find the answer I was looking for, and that's what made me join in the first place.

I wasn't even aware of that, that's a really good suggestion!  @ENTERPRISE?

I do believe a similar thing was recently implemented in our reviews, so even guests could comment on the reviews.  Shouldn't be too difficult to implement a "read only" feature for something like the news section, I'd personally imagine.

Welcome back Kaz,

Quick question, where is it happening that as a non registered member, you were unable to see posts ? This is not something we have set and I just tested in incognito mode and not logged in and I can see posts just fine ? If you could let me know where you are experiencing this, that would be a great help.

Thanks,

E

Great question, so I tried to duplicate it again.  It turns out the text at the top of the banner "you must register to view or post in our community..." is not entirely accurate.  I think I read that banner and clicked a topic that didn't have any replies and felt I was being gated and not able to see all the content.  Further testing reveals, I can see all the posts without issue.  It might be worth changing the text on that banner.  Who would have thought people actually read that stuff?
