MORPHEUS 8069 on XFX 6900 XT?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

looking for some information's, advice, experience about the MORPHEUS 8069. Im tempted to pull the trigger on it with a pair of Phanteks T30... But as it is not cheap (more than 200 EUR) i wanted to throw in the room the following:

1, Compatibility - Classic layout of PCB - as the XFX is not the standard AMD layout it should not be fitting, but as the cooler is mounted just with the 4 screws and the positioning of the wholes look the same it could work?  Any thoughts?

2, Back-plate - there is a recommendation to keep the original one but i assume it would be looking like a ship from Star trek Enterprise look. (which could be cool or as well not idk..) But are there any aftermarket back-plates made for the XFX 6900 XT Merc 319 ?

3, Would be the Phanteks T30 the best you can put on it?

I watched some reviews and im kind of surprised that there are not more information's about it... I found it just by coincidence as i was wondering if there are any third party air coolers out there and have to say that Raijintek is the only i found...  Had one back in the day with my R9 290 and was happy with he performance but it looks that there are not much interest in it..

Thought as well to buy a XFX 7900 cooler from someone who would WC his card, as they changed/improved the vapor chamber of the cooler. But the wholes are not fitting.. 😞  Would be interested to see if the "Improvement" improves anything at all in regards to the old design..

So yeah if you have any advice/information/recommendation or experience to share, then please do so.. Looking forward to it.

Wish you all a nice day ahead..

BR,

MM

I had the Morpheus II Core on my 1080 Ti but never bothered with my 3080 Ti since temps are fine as-is. Assuming it's the same story with the 8069 as the Core:

1 - as long as the mounting hole spacing is the same (it should be) then it shouldn't matter, my 1080 wasn't reference. the heatsink only touches the die it doesn't really hug the card close enough for clearance to be an issue.

2 - if your backplate is thin or the included screws are long enough you can reuse the stock backplate. They weren't on my 1080 Ti so I ran without and never bothered getting longer ones.

3 - T30 should be fine. I ran iPPC 3000s but even a crap fan is going to be better than the stock ones.

  • 5 weeks later...

So im reporting back...

Its as well like in RL - one success and one fail.. Im going to share both of them....

The success is that first i tried just to replace the stock fans, did it a bit Ghetto style as a first prove of concept:

IMG_1380.thumb.jpeg.77c990dab8fe09b5d41ab365412dc687.jpeg

and here are the results:

stock fan temps

Stock.thumb.PNG.1eb019c8c9e2b3da059d87455716490b.PNG

and Ghetto mod temps:

Stock3T30.thumb.PNG.36ccbbca980962f95cf7eabb991fcdf2.PNG

Difference of 4-6 degrees with the same RPM and way more quiet? Jackpot! Summer can come lol....

Next to the Morpheus - it doesn't fit ... One module is in the way of the IHS of the cooler as its as well cooling the ram modules and 1 specific module R68 is blocking to fit there.... So i thought OK then lets cut of the unnecessary piece of copper with the motto "what doesn't fit, you make fit"  but yeah fail... i came to a conclusion to fast, should have take better look at it...its exactly the point where the heat pipes are melted to the plate and i cut in to 2 heat pipes.. so after i can look at it again i will probably cut it in half and make a nice decoration out of it lol.... "Memmento Mori" i just killed a new cooler lol...

At least i can confirm the Quality of the cooler and that the plate is pure copper :confused_frusty2:

yes  exactly the "flaps" are new. but what irritates me is that the R68 module is the same as on the reference card but i suppose its "higher" and blocking the Morpheus flaps... Dont know its simply preventing the cooler to "sit down" to make contact on this side....

here is the reference PCB:

Here the XFX PCB:

and here the teardown with the XFX cooler and take a look there is a "cutout" for the module in the cooling plate...
