Is there a practical CPU upgrade for Ryzen 5 3600 on B450M Mortar Max (MS7B89)?

Currently running B450M Mortar Max (MS7B89) under Ryzen 5 3600 with 32GB DDR4 3600Mhz RAM.  Is it worth swapping CPU to upgrade CPU?  I don't want to spend a lot of money.  Don't know if I should upgrade or keep it as is.  Just wait and see what comes out later this year.  Most demanding software I use right now uses up to 6-8 cores.

Are you considering an upgrade because you HAVE to or want to? I'll let the guys who own AMD CPU's weigh in. The newest AMD CPU I have is an Athlon 64 X2.

Probably depends on what you want to use it for. If it's for gaming, see if your motherboard has a BIOS that supports dropping in a 5800X3D. Otherwise if you have productivity use cases can look at a 5700X or 5800X too as those will boost higher. Any of these would be a great upgrade to the 3600 if your motherboard supports them.

 

Preliminary research looks like they added Ryzen 5000 support with this BIOS from 2021.

Your motherboard supports the 5700x and 5800x3D. Both are a nice upgrade.

Buy a used 3700x on ebay for $100. Sell the 3600x for $60. Get 4 more threads at for $40.

Not even sure I want it.  Definitely don't need it as 3600 is filling my needs quite nicely as is.

5800x runs hotter but it's a good option as well.

If you go with ryzen 5000, IMO the 5700x is the best bang for buck cpu. Runs cooler than a 5800x but is about 99% the same in performance. 

 

Having enough threads to match PS5 level hardware is really all you should need, and the 3700x is pretty much right on target in that sense.

You do get a nice IPC bump and clock bump going to a 5700X. If it's not outside your budget, honestly that'd be my choice over just buying another Zen 2 part. 5800X should be around $200 now, but you should be able to find a 5700X for around $180ish. Sell the 3600 and I think you've done decent for $120.

Wonderful CPU series that was. Heck even the single core ones (I had the 3200+) was pretty awesome.

 

OP, I'll echo the 5700x.

What CPU cooler do you have? That's something to consider, since you'll be dealing with a little more heat.

I'm riding the 5700x train here.  Then I'd ride that system out till I had to upgrade because the next upgrade would require a whole new system since it's not likely a higher core 5000 series would benefit you much.

if you like overclocking id suggest a 5700G. It is fast in 1440p gaming in due to high IPC and potential insane RAM overclock, but lacks in L3 cache with just 16 vs 32Mb for the other CPU's.

 

I would say for 140 a used 5700G, a new 5700X for 185, or a new 5800X3d for 290.

 

My personal choice was the 5700G because i like to run DDR4-5000+, and is plenty fast for gaming with 3060ti. But you cant go wrong with any of them, even a 5600 will be a hefty IPC uplift. I owned one and it was faster than 5700G in gaming,

i think the 5700x is good, but too expensive for what you get if the 5600 is 70 cheaper. its the same in gaming anyway.
