Replacing Desktop With Laptop, Recommendations?

The new 15 inch MacBook Air just released 

 

 

 

If I were going to go for a gaming laptop, I'd probably go for the Dell G16. 13900hx, RTX 4070, 32GB RAM and a 1TB nvme SSD. It comes with a 240hz 2560x1600 screen for £1900.

Lol what ? You see that is the sort of stuff which is absolute bull. You should be able to load up whatever you want drivers/OS wise without receiving a penalty for doing so. So wrong.

it's not really that cynical. 

 

Dynamic boost is set through the "NVIDIA Platform Controller and Framework" driver component and the laptop manufacturer has to set it since they know the laptop's thermal/power design. 

 

No idea why you can't download a separate "GPU Dynamic Boost" driver but I wouldn't be surprised if NVIDIA doesn't allow it.

Go with something lightweight, comfortable, and efficient for the laptop. Render the games and heavy stuff on the desktop and stream it to the laptop. Michele does it all through Steam, even stuff on other platforms like epic or Ubisoft launchers. It works very well with very low latency. She even does it from her home computer to her laptop at work.

@ENTERPRISE What did you end up picking up if anything?  I'm looking at a similar choice right now, with my kids still being younger I'm a few years from really desktop gaming again.  I'm usually downstairs on the couch or table hanging out. 

 

I was looking at the new version of the asus rog scar with mini led.  I'll probaby try and hold off for newer gen gpus as I feel buying a 4 series right now isn't the smartest choice.  I have been looking at the legion, scar, and blade.  All 16".

old thread but still relevant, I have to buy a laptop every few years for the wife, last one we got was a MSI. Only Input I have is get one with the longest warranty they offer. Between keycaps breaking at the hinge, lines on the screen, heatpipe failure. i didn't have to pay anything and msi support was willing to direct ship me parts. It's just not something you should be doing on a $3k+ device.

Yeah I always bought razers extended warranties to make life easier.  I don't really bring them on work travel anymore and don't travel enough to warrant super slim like the razer so I was thinking about branching out to save a bit.

In the end I ended up going for an upgrade for my desktop. While the laptop sounded like a good idea, I feared I would get hit by the "Tweaking" bug, which is not something you can do with a laptop all that much.

If money allowed/allows (in the future):
IMO, a Ryzen APU - based Framework Laptop would be the closest to a 'proper' desktop replacement.

Alternatively (and personally),
I've always been attracted to the idea of having a 'main desktop' and then a Ruggedized (older-generation) laptop to take with me *anywhere* [or, even leave (hidden) in my car]

However, a decent smartphone or older phablet can almost 'stand-in' for those needs.

IMO, ARM-Android is so prolific, just about any non-x86_64-exclusive 'function' of a laptop, can be sub'd-in by a 'mobile' device.
