NVME Drives are getting pretty cheap

Recommended Posts

Bought a 2TB NVME Mushkin drive, 3200mbps read 2500mbps write for $80 on Newegg yesterday. 1TBs are down to ~$35.

At this rate, HDDs entire existence is coming into question.

They have come down in price by a fair whack at the 1-2TB but they do start looking less attractive as the capacity density increases and for any large storage 24/7 applications I still would not rely on consumer drives and would go the Enterprise route, by which point HDD's still make sense.

Agreed, but it does seem like a future where HDD become almost entirely replaced by SSDs could be getting close.

That's pretty damn good. I paid £195 ($240) for a 512GB nvme drive in 2019. I'm looking forward to 4TB+ SSDs from reputable brands coming down to below £150. In the mean time, I am going to buy a Seagate Ironwolf 4TB as a media storage drive.

Technically, isn't all SDDs and HDDs you own, Enterprise SSDs and HDDs? 🤔🤔🤔

You can get 4TB sata SSDs for that price, at least here in the US. NVME drives are not far behind.

For sure, there will be a time where SSD's prices will come to a point where it will make more sense. We all know the performance is there. Once the price per GB gets more favorable, then the performance increase would still warrant paying the little extra. I would love an all SSD array. I did look into it recently when I re-worked my home server but cost in 2023 didn't make sense.

I reckon in the next 5 years, if I were to re-assess, SSD's would look better, but still cant be sure if they would be at a price point to pull the trigger. Time will tell.

Ha, I see what you did there. It would be fantastic if any drive I owned had its endurance increased based on my ownership...one can dream.

Meh, I paid something like ~US $380 and change for a 40MB La Cie hard drive back around 1990 or so. Thought it was the best thing since sliced bread w/butter at the time; and it helped me complete my college studies before I retired from the military back then.

Anyway, it's all relevant (relevance over time, something dr. one stone might proffer). Today's $2,000 video card will be worth a fraction of that in a few years.

Yeah, absolutely, but it's just insane how much prices have come down over such a short amount of time.

$0.04/GB for an nvme drive today vs $0.46/GB just 4 years ago is an insane price drop. This is new for new prices as well. Going on used, the nvme drive I have now is going for less than £25.

I got my 2x4TB SN850X's for CA$500 each. It's kinda neat upgrading from 128GB->512GB->4TB SSDs in 10 years, hopefully I can replace my storage with SSDs - but I'd want 16TB drives that are ~CA$500...

Just picked up a 1TB nvme for $60 at Micro Center. Was not the cheapest one they had - they certainly had 1TB drives for $40-$50. But I needed a TLC drive with a DRAM cache.

As for 2.5" SATA SSD's, the 1TB Crucial I got for like $100 a couple years back is now $50.

Just saw a 1TB NVME 3500MB/s PCIe4 drive for $35 on newegg.

And prices are expected to drop more over the coming months.
