Member Submissions Video Section

Recommended Posts

Hello!

So I normally don't go here because instead of actual member submissions, I usually just see a bunch of LTT videos and Bill Gates on David Letterman for some reason on the video banner which don't seem like member submissions at all. But every now and then a gem pops up such as @Bastiaan_NL's excellent videos around volt modding and other things, as well as @Mr. Fox's excellent videos around overclocking.

Just wondering if this was on purpose? Seems LTT and JayzNoSense is drowning out actual member submissions and those don't feel like member submissions at all, more like reposting of other people's videos. Maybe those should go somewhere else, or just be posted as a normal discussion thread? When I think of "member submissions", I would think member made videos. I doubt LTT and Jay is on EHW.

Just a thought I had.

I think as it is now there are just not a lot of categories for videos, so if someone wants to post a video of something like a game trailer or LTT video, they would either have to categorize it at member submission or industry news.

I didn't know we had a place for that. I might post some of my videos as long as there's a proper category for them.

I voiced my opinion on this issue several months ago. I agree that the members video section should actually have our own members submissions in it. I think there could be a separate category for reposting non-original content and that it should not get the spotlight when videos are being suggested by the site.

The below image is the random suggested videos to watch at the end of this thread. It should be suggesting our content, not other sites. Just my opinion.

I've never really looked at the member video section since it seems like it's mostly full of reposted vids from elsewhere. I just looked through and found a Z590 Dark OC settings vid that you posted. While I'm admittedly wasting it's potential having it in my racing sim PC, I do have a Z590 Dark and currently just use one of the Luumi daily driver profiles that came on the board.

I just want to say that it's exactly what I want in a video like that. You go through everything slow enough to see what's going on, but it's not a 20 minute video of babbling about every step of the way. It's also done on a capture card and legible, not some shaky cellphone cam pointed at a monitor.

I definitely agree that original member videos should be first ones to show up. It's weird that for you that early CGI video is the first one to show up. I posted that a long time ago now.

Yep I agree. Most of the time my list has multiple LTT videos, JayzTwo Cents, and Bill Gates on Letterman with maybe 1 or 2 actual member submissions.

Other times at least the podcast videos come up, though kinda old now given that's not currently active.

I agree with the sentiments here. Unfortunately while I could limit the videos showing to strictly member related content only...that would mean the rotation of the video content would be very seldom as ultimately the section is not utilized massively at this point. Perhaps when this changes I can revisit this. I have removed the video section from displaying at the ends of threads, instead I have replaced it with an activity stream for now.

I can kinda understand that, but maybe should still be helpful guides or whatever, not random LTT videos. That really seems to be antithesis of member video submissions.

I certainly understand your point here, but I think removing the video section from the end of posts is essentially gimping the section completely. Members should be submitting content to get it seen and this will be hard to do if the section is no longer displayed at the end of threads. If it weren't for it being there in the first place, most people wouldn't know we even have a member based video section. With it removed, I think it will have the opposite effect on encouraging new content.

I would, if we had more of that sort of content 🙂 Note that "Member Submissions" are simply videos curated by members, and was never meant as a strict "Member content" only section whereby the content was related to content found only on EHW or videos created by members such as Overlocking/Guide videos. if and when we get that sort of content, I am happy to create another category that is dedicated to "Member content" only and give that pride of place on the site, but until then I will leave it on random rotation. It is that, or do away with it altogether which I think would be a shame.

I do not agree it gimps the section. We have had the video section for a fair while now and having it at the end of the posts has not yielded any benefit to the section so far as submission of any extra content. it has a fairly obvious place on the home page to which most of the site traffic lands and still the submissions have been seldom.

Hopefully the section picks up and we can start doing more with it as previously stated, but with it still essentially being in its infancy it is hard. Curating content is difficult, strictly from a member created content point of view as unless you have dedicated members wanting to create that type of content, you usually have to create an incentive for content creation in the guise of prizes etc which at this point in time is not something we will be looking to do due to financial constraints.

Well thanks for your input. It seems you are going for a quantity methodology here. I get it, but also feel like the random LTT crap just hides actual member videos so that was my only concern. I don't feel like people are coming to EHW to find LTT videos so it just clutters and suppresses the actual videos you mention there are few of. I guess I am looking at it from a standpoint of we are in a niche area so its going to be niche on videos too. Honestly I didn't find a lot of the cooler videos @Bastiaan_NL put up because they were always forced out of rotation by random LTT, JayzTwoCents, or other stuff. I guess I am looking at it like that.

After looking at this again, I am going to have a reshuffle regarding the video section to split "Internet Videos" which is just your standard off the internet videos such as LTT etc away from "Member Content". This gives us a clear division between that content. I will also post up some banners to make it clear the type of video content we expect in each section.

"Internet Videos" & "Competition Drawing" will now no longer display on the homepage as I think you guys are right, while we do not have lots of pure member content, the little we do have, we should not hide it 🙂

@Avacado, I have also created a dedicated section for "Competition Drawing" videos so they no longer clutter up core video feeds, but still available for those who wish to check draws are fair.

I agree there should be a clear category for member made videos and other videos and member made content should be prioritized. Would it not be possible to have two rows on the home page with the first row being member content and the second being other stuff? If the other types of videos are not visible, might as well remove them completely since they will probably get no traction.

Having another row is likely possible but I want to be careful as the homepage is already fairly busy. That being said, the homepage is meant to be the "summary" of site content. I will have a think on this 🙂

Does anyone want two rows? IMO two rows makes sense because I like to see user subs for random videos as well as user made videos, but if no one is using it... lets just delete it. No point in keeping it if it doesn't work.

That is the point of our argument Ultra, we don't want OTHER video content getting any traction within our site. This is another reason why I bugged @Simmons to bring back the podcast, it went a long way to generating additional content that appeared in the video stream.

Personally, I'd rather just not have any "other" videos. If people want to go watch whatever the big techtubers are doing they can go watch it on youtube.

I get wanting to draw attention to the site to get more pageviews/interaction/whatever since we do need the site to grow. I also understand that there isn't a ton of user created content yet, but we're still just getting started. I think slowly building up a collection of relevant videos makes sense. We have a lot of very knowledgeable members here. If we can get more of that knowledge put into video form, I think it will all work itself out.

Last I checked this is a hardware site... We should focus efforts on content related to building/modifying/overclocking so we can really live by our "Pushing it to the limit" motto.

Yeah well said. It's really been since joining this site and connecting with you all here that I've really gotten interested in overclocking, benching, etc. At some point I'll get brave and try volt modding and shunt modding.

I mean I've never even delidded anything before but with the video @Bastiaan_NL put up of his 260, I will be trying it on the 275 I picked up for HWBot.

Completely get your point bud.

I have disabled the "Internet Videos" from showing on our widgets. I did not want to erase them completely and they are still accessible should you want to browse to them, but they are no longer promoted as such. I think strikes a decent middle ground 🙂

I agree with everything you said but the part quoted is something that can easily get lost in the shuffle.
