So the cost per kWh here is 9.6 cents. Since it's summer and we're using the A/C (though it's set to 78F) I was going to stop folding for a few months. But I really want to and we worked it out and the cost would only be about $34 a month. Actually, it may be a little less as I used 500w power consumption for the calculation, but my Kill-A-Watt meter as well as GreenWithEnvy show the card using 350, 400, 450 or 500 watts depending on work unit. I ran it by my wife and she's ok with me continuing to fold, because I really want to, and we can afford it.

Also I was folding in January and February when it was 10F outside or less and the heat was going, and we had high natural gas bills as well as power bills. Like $250 combined.

Heat isn't an issue at all really because my rig is in a finished basement that's probably 10F cooler than upstairs. The heat IS an issue if I run the 3060 for foldathons in wife's office, I was pretty shocked at how hot it made the room, it was sweltering.

TL;DR I got the ok that we can afford for me to continue to fold over the summer. 🙂

Have you tried tuning a super low power folding profile? I bet you can get amazing points at just 100W. Also put your CPU in ECO mode 35 or 45w and it should also still be very fast.

Cost is always a consideration with electricity for Folding. That and heat. That is why I fold very occasionally. Energy is not cheap here in the UK. Also to get heat under control I would need to use my portable AC unit which is not cheap to run. In the long run I want to get a proper split AC setup for the office which is much more efficient than the portable, but its low priority and about £3K to purchase and install.

Something for the future haha.

Get a heat pump that does AC as well. Hot and cold, plus no need to use gas for central heating. You get pretty much instant heat as well. Don't need to wait 20-30 minutes for the radiators to get hot.

I have heard of those but would need to check their efficiency as Gas is still cheaper than electricity and ultimately the heat pumps still use electricity to run.

Here's an alternate version taking into account some suggestions from Flux on Discord:

2nd version. Because my gradient tool or possibly magic wand tool was not selecting on the edges for "folding@home", I had to manually touch it up with black lines using a 2px black pencil tool.

You must have some of the most educated and talented gang bangers in your area then.........

Just saying, that really doesn't look like any type of graffiti I've ever seen.

Oh, I can do graffiti art that looks like the real deal and is difficult to read etc. I learned how from a guy in prison. But I chose to be conservative with this one and just do bubble letters because I usually get complaints about legibility.

Constructive Criticism:

Know your audience and also know the company (or companies) you're representing in your image.  Brand recognition is a big thing with companies, and that includes getting their logos, fonts, and colors correct.  This doesn't mean you can't get creative, but usually it means leaving the logo / text in the logo alone.  I think that's the biggest issue I personally see with the image above, is that the text and fonts don't match the companies represented in it.

Graffiti art, actual graffiti can actually be pretty neat and expressive.  I could see why legibility would be a concern when talking about brand recognition.  Graffiti might be a better solution to try on something else.  I mean honestly, it'd be kinda neat having a tagged up graphics card or something like that.  Kind of like we used to get with the gamer anime girl stickers on GPU's.  Or maybe even a case mod or something.

Y'know, I was just trying to do something cool and do some art to represent the team.

I'm not even really sure what to reply with, because I don't see myself or my art misrepresenting a "company", (it is not on social media or anything in a capacity where it would be used that way) it is simply what I decided to make in hopes of doing something cool for us and hopefully making some of you guys happy. It also took a lot of work to sketch out and ink, to the point that now my low back is messed up and painful two days later from leaning over a table to make it.

I don't think it misrepresents the logo for the site, it has the stylized "E", and it's using the exact same gradients and colors the logo does.

I didn't want to cause trouble or start a flame war. I just wanted to do some art to show my folding team spirit. That's all. I'm sorry you don't like it and we disagree.

It was just some constructive criticism.  It's not an adult toy, you don't have to take it so hard.  I was only trying to help you progress.  "You don't post it on social media".....ummmm, what is a forum?  Again, I was only trying to help you get even better.  I wasn't being mean or anything.  There's some things to take creative liberties with, and some things that really shouldn't be.  Company logos and fonts are one of those that really "shouldn't be" in most situations.

You also completely skipped my opinion about the graffiti idea.  Have you ever thought about painting any of your equipment?  Modding it?  I think that'd be a great use of your graffiti skills!  Modding of PC parts with artwork would absolutely get more attention than photoshop work, and graffiti, as I mentioned can be VERY expressive and beautiful.

EDIT:
It does appear that I might have upset you though.  So, with that said.....I'll go ahead and back off.  If you're not wanting constructive criticism from me, I'll go ahead and stay out of it from now on and not say a thing.

I appreciate this and sorry I didn't respond to the second idea.

Yes, the forum is social media but it's not on the front page of the site nor is it officially sanctioned by Enterprise to represent anything. When we talk about social media I'm thinking Twitter or Facebook. I would of course love to see this art posted there but that's probably not happening. I appreciate that you are trying to help me get better, but if I just copied and pasted the site logo (like I've done a million times) and did bubble art saying "folding@home" it wouldn't look very good or match at all.

Also, this is a 29 page forum thread that will have many more posts and pages in the future, eventually the art will be buried and forgotten.

Regarding the graffiti on the rig or graphics card: cool idea. Flux already does this (not graffiti though) and said he uses vinyl sheets you can print on (I think) but our printer may not be usable for it as it only accepts thin sheets of paper, we tried using mixed media paper one time and it wouldn't go through...

I generally eventually sell all my components when I upgrade, so I prefer to keep them stock. I also don't want anything on my glass side panels as it would detract from the clean look of my rig imo.

Thank you for your opinion and input man.

I appreciate this and sorry I didn't respond to the second idea.

I will openly admit, my comment about gang bangers originally was a smart aleck response.  That's just how I am, I joke around a lot.  🤣

The rest though, like I said, was just trying to help.  :eat_cheers:
If my comments are a little to brazen, as I said too, I'll happily back off and not comment again.  You seemed like you were curious why nobody was commenting about it, so I was trying to help, while still being me.

It's cool, sorry if I reacted with hostility or negativity. I was only trying to explain that I did this for fun and hopefully to make other people feel the pride that I do as a member of this site and folding team. It was never meant to represent the site, though when I was graphics designer I got similar complaints about misrepresenting the brand. That was not my intention and honestly not even something I was thinking about when I drew this stuff up.

I appreciate and understand that from a business point of view, you are 100% correct that this could be taken to misrepresent the brand, possibly because the logo is not the official logo. But as I said, if I paired that with bubble art "folding@home" it would look weird. Representing the site as a brand was not even something I was considering, I just wanted to do some psuedo graffiti art and scan it in and color it. Because it's been on the back burner as an idea in my head for months.

I do appreciate the feedback and will try to keep it in mind in the future. And yes I was curious why it was getting no comments on here or Discord for a day or two so I appreciate you commenting and apologize if I seemed hostile. I appreciate you trying to help. Thank you.

We should chat on Discord again sometime.
