[Official] Starfield Discussion Thread

The Starfield MetaCritic score is currently fluctuating around the high 80s on PC (we've seen 88, 89, and 90 in the past few minutes), though it's currently still unscored on Xbox - it's worth remembering that the two versions of the game are pretty similar. That's likely to change a little over the next few days, as other reviews make their way into the public domain. For balance, the game's Opencritic score currently sits at 87, but it's worth noting that that site doesn't split review scores based on platform.

I figure this is a big enough deal to make a news thread about it. Probably one of the biggest game releases we will see for a while.

Seems that HDR is broken on PC.

TWISTEDVOXEL.COM

It appears that HDR functionality is not working as intended in the Xbox Series X|S and PC versions of Bethesda Game...

I was thinking Atlantis looks really bad, the color all seems off and it makes the lighting look weird. This is probably why.

Yea I saw from the latest Digital Foundry video that they noticed that HDR on consoles was broken. With blacks being over exposed and no controls for paper whites / peak brightness. Let alone contrast for SDR.

I don't believe the PC version supports HDR (yay console first development...) and honestly, I am kinda used to this. Some games really have poor HDR implementation on PC. On my LG OLED, I've turned off HDR because I am getting tired of how bad it can be. Especially noticeable in some RE titles and I don't recall but I believe RDR II would break or be glitching. It may be a Windows 10 issue too because I vividly recall playing RE7 and RE8 in HDR and it was great but for some reason, RE2 was really washed out.

I believe Elden Ring's was good but its been a while. God of War's implementation on PC is some of the best I have ever seen.

It seems to be broken in HDR and SDR. Some combination of terrible color filters and very bad HDR support. It's mindboggling to me that this passed QA.

There are a lot of mods popping up aiming to fix the HDR issues but none of them seem to have clear instructions to get them to work yet, or at least I haven't been able to.

There is a mod that removes/tones down a lot of the color filtering. This mod will improve over time, and the dev says for now it's more of a sledgehammer approach. I just got it to work and it looks way better IMO. The instructions on the mod page didn't work for me tho, but I was able to figure it out after reading through some posts and I made a simple download for it. This will work on the game pass version and I suspect the steam version as well, but I cannot verify the steam version.

Mod page:

Removes the color filters from the game, making the colors more uniformly neutral with deeper blacks.

It is SO god damned hard.

SO effing hard.

NOT TO JUMP INTO MODS IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT HAVING PLAYED THROUGH FIRST!

😛

I mean I've loving it and taking my time.  It's a game I can't just pop in and out for 20-30 minutes, I need half day, full day etc.

Fun so far, excited to continue playing/crafting etc.  Haven't even started ship constructs, just landed in Alpha Centauri this morning.

Anyways... man the articles, the mods, the Reddit blasts... I'm... I'm DOING MY BEST DAMNIT, STOP ENTICING ME WITH MORE GREAT STUFF ON TOP OF AN ALREADY GREAT GAME lmao.

LOL

I'll never mod on my first playthrough. I usually mess around with them after but I wouldn't call this filter removal really a mod. I also really like the colours of the default filters but what I don't like is the super, blown out dark areas.

In Fallout 3, I've installed the silly mods like killing kids or in Skyrim, making the dragons Macho Man Randy Savage.

What I am tempted to mod in Starfield is the menus. I really don't like them and I am a fan of all of their menus in past games. This just feels... bad. Way too many button presses to get some decent info.

Yea I wouldn't call the color filter remover a mod either. More like a fix.

I'm getting pretty sucked in to the game and I feel like I have barely scratched the surface.

I only played it for about 4 hours but yes… I feel Starfield has potential to be one of their best games 🙂 I’m gonna deep dive this weekend and I cannot wait. Woot!

My personal list is:

1. Fallout 3 (Point Lookout DLC a must play)

2. Oblivion (Shivering Isles DLC a must play)

3. Skyrim

4. Fallout 4

NV sits in between Oblivion and Skyrim but it’s Obsidian.

I really like NV, especially the factions and ammo system but the desert / atmosphere and the excessive jank pulls it away from being a contender for the top.

You skipped Fallout 3? Well, I aint no better, I haven’t played Morrowind.

It’s likely difficult to play it now by today’s standards but when Fallout 3 came out, it blew my feeble mind.

Atmosphere drives the experience (look and feel) for me and Fallout 3 nails it. From the radio and music, pipboy interface, towns like Megaton, which can be nuked from Tenpenny Tower with the old aristocratic ghoul sniping peasants from his balcony. I felt Bethesda nailed the DC vibe, even if the main plot is meh and no real factions, the side quests and characters lift it up to the top for me.

As odd as it is to say, you wouldn’t have NV without Fallout 3. I haven’t done a full playthrough of Fallout 4 yet (35 hrs in) but it seems to be objectively better but I’m not picking up on the vibes as much. Feels more iterative like a 3.5 than the jump from Oblivion to Skyrim.

Oblivion is right there too. The guilds quests, like the Dark Brotherhood are still memorable. The world helped me get my LotR RPG fix at the time and really introduced me to large RPGs. I also love the fact the entire game is voiced by 6 or 7 people, the lock picking mini game and well all the jank. I haven’t played it in a while but I remember skills were ranked up by just  completing actions. I think you could boost your acrobatics to max by just jumping everywhere. Mod your stats in command prompt and you could jump over the city walls lol.

Speaking of Oblivion, I played about 4 hours of Starfield last night and I’m getting some serious Oblivion vibes. I think because of the little things like the skills system and the lock picking (difficulty / learning curve).

BTW, I really recommend that mod (fix) @UltraMega shared. I went back and forth a few times with it (on/off) last night as I was unsure if I should keep it. I like some of the colours the dev's were going for but... theres no questions that contrast is much better with the fix. I wonder if I could tweak it to ~50% strength to retain the original colours but also keep the contrast.

FWIW: if you have a 3000/4000 series, force REBAR in NVIDIA Inspector. for whatever reason the game doesn't by default. Good for a few extra frames.

NVIDIA Profile Inspector -> Starfield -> 5-Common -> change these ⬇️ from disabled to ⬇️

Some mods I recommend using:

This one I had to manually install. I just dropped the inventory folder into the Starfield data directory in the "My Documents" folder and it worked. Very useful:

StarUI Inventory at Starfield Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com)

I think the rest of these worked with Vortex Mod Manager:

Skip Launch Video at Starfield Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com)

Undelayed Menus at Starfield Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com) - speeds up menus/interface navigation.

Starfield FOV at Starfield Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com)

Icon Sorting Tags - Starfield Edition at Starfield Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com) - adds icon-tags to loot to make them easier to categorize.

Enhanced Player Healthbar at Starfield Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com) - Health bar will more color stages

Enhanced Dialogue Interface at Starfield Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com)

And then probably the most needed mod:

Round Butt Sarah at Starfield Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com) 😆

my mostly cheat free mods so far:

image.thumb.png.62fa5ff7290106a27e61b15836edbf22.png

SFSE - self explanatory

Baka Achievement Enabler - self explanatory

Starfield Upscaler (DLSS) - self explanatory

Cleanfield - No Intro Videos - self explanatory

Natural LUTs - self explanatory

Undelayed Menus - removes the awful delay in menus

Ship Builder Tweaks - various tweaks to ship building (overlap tolerances the main benefit)

SkyUI Inventory - the GOAT, same idea as SkyUI for Skyrim

Enhanced Dialog Interface - makes the text dialog boxes marginally better

Enhanced Player Healthbar - adds a gradual green -> yellow -> orange -> red color change to the health bar rather than just red @ 10%

Ship Storage Multiplied - makes ship storage make sense (because storage containers the size of a bus holding only x2 more than my character is dumb)

Visible Skills Descriptions - make locked skills show perks

The Eyes of Beauty - stops everyone looking like they're on the verge of crying

Burden Me Not - removes junk from being lootable and from showing on the scanner (can still interact though).
