Search function has been weird lately

Recommended Posts

Alright so I can be on any page and this happens, but lets go ahead and say I'm on the homepage.  I type in, idk, let's say "pio" in the search and hit enter.

A wild new tab appears!
https://reviews.extremehw.net/all-reviews/corsair-mp700-pro-2tb-nvme-review/

Meanwhile in the background on the tab I was originally browsing and searching on:
https://extremehw.net/search/?q=pio&quick=1

This has been a recurring bug for a while now.  I just keep forgetting to report it. 🙂

EDIT:  Also, I'm pretty sure its almost always the TOP review that gets pulled up as a new tab.  I think.  Cannot confirm as its almost gotten instinctual to just close the tab and continue going.

Can confirm, appears on my end too. I thought it was just my phone (im usually on mobile) being weird.

Pressing enter after typing my search query opens that review page in a new tab.

Edit: 1:14pm EST, oddly enough, I cannot replicate it right now. However, this has been happening for the past (at least) 2 weeks. I was trying to dig out my gaming threads using the search function for context when I noticed this event / bug.

Also, as a retired albeit fairly experienced web dev/designer, the note that follows might be useful as well (fwiw):

Note: given the wide array of available browsers/viewport sizes/etc. (e.g., mobile vs. desktop; different screen sizes, portrait vs. landscape, etc.) that are likely in use, when reporting content related issues/problems, it'd be a lot more helpful if those reports included any additional relevant info that can be provided.

A shortlist follows:

  • the name of the browser used when the issue was noted (e.g., firefox vs. chrome, vs edge, etc.);
  • if applicable, desktop vs laptop, screen size., operating system, etc.;
  • if applicable, mobile phone/tablet make and model; whether viewing in portrait or landscape, etc.;
  • and whether you tried to confirm the issue could be repeated using a different browser/hardware/os, etc.

Good point (to help troubleshooting). I can't replicate it now but if it appears again, I will note the above.

I can replicate it every time on Brave Browser on desktop, which I believe is based off Chrome?  Mobile doesn't APPEAR to do it.  I don't have / use any other browsers to test, nor will I be installing one to test since its a minor issue. 🙂

On Windows 11 Desktop Chrome, it seems to be tied to the Carousel.

Just loading the home page and hitting the Enter key, it loads the currently visible 1st item in the Carousel.

So it seems like the Carousel is immediately setting tab focus on it's first item as it scrolls so when the use hit's enter, it opens up the carousel link instead which does default to opening a new tab with the review.

able to confirm, just going to https://extremehw.net/ and hitting enter, does open the review.

Also can confirm.  Happens on me with Brave / Win11 or Win10.  I didn't even think about just hitting enter on the homescreen, yeah its the carousel causing that behavior.

Again, given the plethora of browser/user related combinations, all of you want to keep in mind that what you see and how things work browser-wise for each of you will depend on an array of things. For instance, I can make things work the ways you are experiencing them by adjusting options that are available to me as a signed in user with a premium subscription.

It would also do well to keep in mind that this site is technically a combination of two separately managed  (unique), but somewhat integrated instances of web content (the Invision forum side of the site and the WordPress side for the review content).

Anyway, in what follows (and to illustrate a few points), I'm using the current version of Firefox on Win 11, with my premium user options set to allow the display of the carousel and side nav bar when viewing the forum side of the site:

2024-01-26_22-59-36.thumb.png.7fb14265b4514726917b90c567f34ed4.png

Then, when I opt to hide the sidebar and the slider blocks on the "Home" page, a setting which only really impacts the Invision forum side of things:

premiumoptions.png.3b247d286a6df00a31fc4fd5fa311a8a.png

I get what follows:

2024-01-26_23-24-45.thumb.png.cc59701ddcb19bbbf954de5328023c24.png

The confusion is actually more related to how each half of the site's linked logos and "Home" top nav menu items are set up; the use of "Home" in each top menu bar (and the two logos, each respectively assigned its own unique link), being the important distinction.

That said, I used to have a WordPress business site that also provided access to an SMF (Simple Machines Forum) forum in a subdomain; the header and logos of each half of the site cleared spelling out which was which (e.g., X Site "Home" vs. the X Site "Forum"), as well as nav menu items that received a similar treatment (e.g., X Site "Home" vs. the X Site "Forum"). That way, users could easily go back and forth between the two halves of the site and know just where they were at.

Finally, a few links that some might find relevant:

I can now replicate it, 100% of the time.

How I did it:

  1. First, I had to manually open a review. I chose this one: https://reviews.extremehw.net/all-reviews/corsair-mp700-pro-2tb-nvme-review/. Closed the tab and that instance of Chrome. Now, if I start a new instance of chrome, two things can happen:
    1. If I type any query into the search bar on the main page, and press "Enter", a new tab opens any review that is currently highlighted in the carousel and the original browser / instance will search for my query.
    2. If I type any query into the search bar on the main page, and click on the magnifying glass, my search will resume as it should, with no additional tabs opening.

Oddly enough, I had to click on the review (step 1.0) to initiate all of this behaviour. Prior to that step, pressing enter would not result in the extra tab.

I can track that as the carousel moves through the highlights, represented by the black dots, the currently highlighted review or link will be the one that opens in a new tab.

image.thumb.png.f61b43a990d370ee0bc27c5dcffe1c70.png

Test environment:

  • Windows 10
  • Chrome (default browser) with uBlock Origin
  • 1440p display

Edit: I am trying to replicate it on mobile (iphone SE, Chrome browser) and I cannot as the action of "searching" requires you to click on the magnifying glass. There is no search bar on the main page, like on desktop, to pre-type your query into.

Can confirm on Windows 11 latest Chrome that the issue looks to be fixed.

1) Loading the main page and hitting Enter does nothing now.

2) Loading the main page and clicking in the search box and hitting Enter loads the Search Page

3) Loading the main page, clicking a Carousel item which opens in a new tab, returning to the main page tab and hitting Enter will open the selected review again, but clicking somewhere else on the page then hitting Enter does nothing as expected.

Figured why not, and I tried these same EXACT steps.

Can also confirm - seems fixed.
