Last big snow of the year was last weekend, and night time temps have been pretty consistently above 34°F, so off with the snow shoes.

Is that an EJ25 motor? How many times have you had to replace the head gaskets over the course of it's life?

It's an EJ257, and the turbo cars (with the MLS gaskets) do not have the same head gasket issues that the NA cars have EJ251/53. 

 

Generally speaking head gasket failure is not that common on the turbo motors.  Ironically, I did blow a head gasket at about 130k miles, but that has been the only issue I've had with the car.  It is probably a bit of a unicorn, since it's been pushing well over stock power for 230k miles.

Nice. Looks good for it's age / mileage. 

 

I always go with the MLS gaskets now. I also torque the head bolts to the turbo spec, even if the motor is naturally aspirated (like an EJ25, etc)

Found the source of my very small coolant leak, it was a busted overflow res cap. Replaced that as well as all the other bits around it the past weekend. Sadly the bottle itself was on back-order until August so just tried to give it a clean with the pressure washer but this stuff was baked on there. Shouldn't really matter IMO.

Also gave it a wash and guess I warmed up the tyres enough to leave slight marks on the concrete lol.

You can also see my headlight clear coat starting to peel if you look closely... need to replace them with OEM units before it gets much worse. (Also those meaty front tyres).

...if the gas station earns a percentage, higher prices (at the same percentage) still means more mulla in their pocket - but yeah, meantime, many oil companies have reported a tripling of their profit now...

Having worked in the energy sector before (I don't anymore and am happy about that), its very volatile. In 2020 one company I worked for as recently as 2014 layed off 25% of its workforce. 2 years later and here we are.

I got this car dirt cheap because someone forgot to torque the pressure plate bolts to spec. They slowly backed out until one slashed right into the case itself. I used a mesh screen and JB weld to fix this. It's still holding up. They thought it was toast.

 

You'd be surprised how much a fresh set of wires/spark plugs can improve performance.

Rod bearings don't really go "bad" but the cut off for me is about 150.000 miles. Higher than that I will change the rod bearings out for peace of mind. You can see these bearings are showing copper, about typical for the mileage though.

Aftermarket Y pipe. Removing the 90* obstruction going into the second cat will net you about 10 HP.

Not that I have an interesting car, but I forgot about this thread, should have taken pics when I did the brakes a couple weekends ago. Ended up replacing all 4 rotors, pads, and had a buddy and his kid help with the fluid. First time I've ever done brakes. Buddy does all his cars so had all the tools, the garage, and helped teach me.

 

I am a bit overdue on transmission fluid, so hope to do that this month. Not standard stuff though, it's blue Type FZ so need to put an order in. Thank God Mazda left a fill and drain port. Car will turn 10 in January, 115k miles on it now. Still treating me good, so I treat it good. I don't really trust anyone else to work on it so I've been learning how to do all the maintenance myself over the past few years. That feeling was reinforced when I found unlubricated caliper alide pins and unevenly worn brake pads a couple weekends ago. Up yours Brakes Plus.

I'm also completely self taught on working on cars. I initially started doing my own maintenance because it was cheaper. Now I do it because I know if I do it, it's done to a standard I'm happy with.

Mine started out of spite. Where I bought my car, they also threw in free oil changes for life (and I was using them), but then they sold to another dealer group and they didn't honor that anymore. Which is fine I guess, but I was upset that no one bothered to call me when they changed owners and I showed up to my oil change appt and the place was closed. Guy on the lot tells me what's going on and to call the new place. I did and then they were like, yeah we'll get you in for oil change - $60. No thanks.

 

Decided to do my own oil changes, with blackjack and hookers! Ok, well maybe just oil changes, but from there, started learning how to do anything else I needed to do as they came up. 

 

And ultimately these days it also means that they are to my standard.

You did a suspension rebuild at a camp ground? 🤪   I've replaced a water pump in the parking lot of a bank, but I didn't CHOOSE to do it there...it was just where my friend happen to break down. 😀
