Not sure how many folks here have a 3D printer, but I imagine there must be a few. Currently printing something very uninteresting on my Ender 3, but I'll take a pic and post it with an explanation when it finishes in another day or two.

Alright so it's been a hot minute and not only did I forget about this thread, but I also went idle with my printer for a few months. Got back up and running last week and I'm having some annoying issues. Almost seems like my bed is warped; either my bed is too close to the extruder in the center and has good adhesion in the surrounding area, or the first few layers aren't squished in the center but the first two or three layers a little bit outside of that don't stick.

Any new 3D printers join EHW with the recent influx of members? Suggestions?

I did successfully print Leia's blaster for a friend as a Halloween costume prop but never got a picture of it before I gave it to her.

Here's my latest print.  My transmitter was delivered today and I got it running for the first time......and it's already covered in dog hair. ?

It was printed in mostly Atomic Filament CF-PETG with some parts being Colorfabb XF-CF20.  I still need a parallel cable so I can hook up both batteries.

Sweet! I'd love to do a printed RC car eventually. I'd have a great time trying to design custom parts, only to realize they probably aren't as good haha. How much did the electronics cost you for a fully functioning car?

I would love to be able to 3d print whatever I need, maybe some day..

Barrier for entry into 3D printing is actually pretty low in the grand scheme of things. The Ender 3 is typically the go-to budget/entry-level printer and it goes for $200-250. Very capable, healthy print volume, but it just doesn't have an "luxury" features to keep it simple. And in some ways, you could argue that's a good thing, as it forces you to learn to do some things manually from the start.

Really easy to learn how to set up, but if you want to make your own designs, getting CAD sorted is another story. If you're familiar with CAD though and have some software at your disposal, you can just save as an .stl and you're good to go, extremely simple.

I'm not sure how much.  I'm guessing I could have bought an RC car for less than what it cost to print one.  I know i spent over $100 on packs of different size screws from McMaster-Carr.  I started printing 3 different ones so I went through about 3 rolls of filament and the filament I used isn't cheap.  Plus I have a bunch of left over bearings and other parts.

I have a Prusa i3 MK3S that I upgraded with a Bondtech extruder and a Slice Engineering Mosquito hot end.

I'm actually wanting to invest in a giant 3D printer, for business, not pleasure though.  Still haven't figured out yet what I'd print with one though.

I know for sure I could use one for various car audio purposes, and making my own custom bits and bobs for my ride.  I dunno, just a purchase and idea I had been debating for the last few months.

Subbing for just general reading and knowledge. :)

I was actually thinking dash kits, A pillar pods, door adapters.  Maybe get into the engines some with fuse panels, maybe air intake things.  I dunno, just been thinking of various ideas.  Tired of living paycheck to paycheck, and have a chunk saved up.  Just trying to think of what I wanna do with it lol.  Still thinking up various "hustles".   Being here on EHW, might just make me take the plunge lol.

When I say this thread my first thought was "what does it mean by prints?". Now I am super jealous. Next time I have some dickin around money this will be on the top of the list of things to use it on.

I FINALLY got my printer up and running again. Have a couple trinkets for myself planned, as well as some parts for the FSAE team. Threw the headphone hanger pictured together in CAD real quick, and printed it later in the day. Works like a charm.

Since I've last posted, I've acquired a Creality CR-10S Pro V2 printer. Snagged it on Prime Day for $500, while it usually costs $680. The one I got was used and broken, as the extruder motor seemed like it had died, so I returned it and got one that's actually new. First interesting thing I've printed with it is a balcony box that's quite popular on Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3688892). Not the most useful thing in the world, but it's neat. Print quality wasn't perfect, as seen on the top surface, but otherwise it looked good. Still dialing some things in and trying out different settings. Planning some larger projects (hardware has been ordered), as well as some aerodynamics-related stuff for the FSAE team.

20210817_222514.thumb.jpg.3b42d091d9bd8eab3c9a165d8c52d424.jpg

The Ender 3's silicone sock around the heat block tore and doesn't stay on anymore, after a clogging incident. Causes some excess filament buildup and creates some annoyances when printing, so that's out of commission until new parts arrive.

I've had both printers running for the last couple weeks now, and I'm cranking out parts left and right. Mostly uninteresting QoL things for the printers themselves, but after a few iterations I printed some airfoil molds for the FSAE team. We're exploring using expanding foam in molds we make rather than machining much more expensive blocks of low density foam for airfoil cores. Here's the result of the very first run, obviously quite rough but pretty good for not having done anything like this before.

Also tried printing molds to do layups directly on. Just a little test piece made up of three prints held together with wooden dowels and epoxy, will try scaling up soon. Just a few layers of fiberglass, and the first run ended up turning out really well!

Also designed and printed this pointlessly over-complicated pencil box with a magnetic lid for some reason.
