Great to see such a strong sign of healthy competition in the cpu market.

I love it, it is nice to continue to see AMD pushing Intel back, competition will hopefully keep up the growth of newer technologies while keeping prices relatively sane. Will be interesting to see this chart again after Zen 3 has done the rounds for a little while.

It is nice to see the competition though. The improvements in CPUs in both power and price has been excellent for consumers in recent years. I just wish AMDs GPU department would pull their finger out. The 1080Ti was released over 3 years ago and AMD still don't have a mainstream GPU that can compete with it.

HP has quite a few nice mid range models using Ryzen's with the iGPU. My aunt has one and it's a potent system for the $429 she paid.

Lots of great AMD laptops finally coming out too now that AMD has proved it's performance in mobile and laptop manufacturer's have finally been able to tool up for AMD options.

In mind shares AMD is winning drastically right now. A core for core performance crown from AMD in the next few months would seriously crush intel. I've got my popcorn ready!

HP has Zen2 APUs in their ProBook and EliteBook lineup now if that helps in the long run.

 

If Dell follows suit and makes "sufficient" models of laptop/micro (Read; Quadcore, 8GB, SSD) cheaper than the i5 models, there is a chance that my hospital ministry might pick up on it. Money is money and you don't really need a lot to run Citrix and Word.

... Funny enough, AMD does have a small foothold in the ministry already actually. All of our Thin clients are either AMD or Marvell.

After the Faildozer era, nice to see them being rewarded with marketshare increase with their Ryzen comeback. Looking forward to Zen 3 and 4.

The recent witty banter between Paul's HW, GN and Jayz2Cents shows why we need proper competition. For those who haven't seen, check Youtube.

 

It boils down to platform limitations and the issue that to fully take advantage of super high IPC as well as all the PCIE lanes, Jay had to go SR3 with the INTEL 3175. Which is not even the highest IPC chip out there. Poor guy had to disable 18 cores to make it 5.0 GHz stable. 

 

It is in our advantage to have both companies innovating. Nobody has anything to gain if one suffers or goes away. There have been cycles of stagnation in this industry. The EE days when FX was king and the Conroe up to Zen days where INTEL was king pretty much everywhere.

Competition is good for all markets. CPU and GPU markets have desperately needed competition. We saw that as soon as AMD had any chance of taking the performance crown magically core count and IPS started going up again. We were stuck at 4 cores for a painfully long time.

Personally, I'm all for having at least 3 proper competitors that actually compete with each other as long as they still are compatible and no pricing corruption...

 

Intel + Nvidia + Radeon for GPU might start having proper competition next year

 

Intel + AMD are currently duking it out for CPU for consumers, if Microsoft can get proper x86-64 emulation on ARM to make ARM an actual competitor, well then we could have Intel + Nvidia/Arm + AMD in the CPU space as well.

 

 

I think it's fine for the companies to have their own focused tech additions as long as they all meet a set of standards.

Yep yep! With performance competition comes innovation and pricing competition. Who wins? The consumer.
