The ARC A770 runs Modern Warfare III (2023) at 1440p flawlessly. Looks and plays excellent. Solid 100+ FPS. I've bumped the power limits to 452W and locked the GPU core at 2700MHz and a fixed 1.160V. Runs fast and cool. No regrets... excellent value for a $300 GPU.

Apparently this game has a pretty good FSR3 implementation.

Can confirm. Just note that you can enable FSR3 with or without frame gen.  I tried at 4K with FSR3 and frame gen enabled. My base frame rate was 40fps and I resulted with 70 fps. I'll play more with it but yes... night and day difference between the driver level implementation. No large stutters anymore. It's just getting used to the latency of 40fps whilst the screen is displaying 70 fps. More subjective opinion.

Without FSR (disabling FSR3 & Frame gen), I've adjusted TAA (only alternative on AMD to FSR) to get my framerate at 60fps. Adjusting it (TAA) to "quality" gets me to my target frame rate. I found that 60fps experience better than the frame gen at 40fps but honestly, it really splitting hairs and your mileage may vary.

I wasn't aware that was ever an issue. Mine is only pulling about 38W at idle with an overclock locking the core at 2700 MHz even at idle, an overvolt and power limits set 200W above stock. That seems really low to me. My 4090 idles about 60W.

I really love the A770... way more than I expected to. It is a tremendous value. I was planning to replace the 6900 XT with a second 4090, but now I'm waiting to how see Battlemage turns out and will hang onto my money until then. I'm not keen on Radeon cards and have no intentions of ever owning another one, nor am I eager to have my wallet raped again by the Green Goblin. The only downside is nobody builds a waterblock for it. I may have one custom built for it by a shop in France that offers the service. But, it runs insanely cool for an air-cooled GPU already. My system has been running for 16 hours and the GPU temperature has ranged between 29° and 32°C with web browsing and watching YouTube videos.

How is it? Always been a fan of the Avatar franchise, so I'm definitely interested in this one.

Context: I received the game for free. I don't have enough time with it to wrap up all my thoughts. Maybe of gameplay 5-6 hrs (I tend to pause, walk away from games so my time is a bit fluffed). I generally dislike the Far Cry series, which this game is closely compared to. I love the spectacle of Avatar movies in 3D / at the cinema.

With that said, I am having a good time with it.

What I am enjoying:

  • Traversal
    • Strength / weakness. You can run fast, jump high, punch humans and watch them fly.
    • Level design / platforming. Everything sorta works in first person. It's not perfect but you wont be throwing you controller at the wall when trying to climb trees.
    • I haven't discovered my own Ikran (flying dino) but I suspect that will really help enjoy the world even more.
  • Sense of scale. You're  9' / 3m tall and humans stand far beneath you.
  • Nomad / tribal weaponry (bows, slings, spears etc.)
  • and as a PC gamer... the level of effort in the PC build. A lot of customizability, secret "unobtainium" graphic settings that I havent tried yet, FSR 3 works really well, and the upscaling over all is very good (all my screenshots are "quality" mode which likely means 1440p+ base resolution). One of the best looking games I have ever played. Maybe it doesn't compare 1:1 to Cyberpunk but it's up there. Feels like Crysis 4.

What I dislike:

  • Plot / narrative. Seems there just to be there, typical lets save the planet plot by banding together to defeat the bad guys
  • No decision making (stakes / impact)
  • RPG systems. Doesn't seem fleshed out enough. There are large branches and I leaning more into the stealth / hunter lane (bonus' for targeting weak points, quieter movement etc.) but I suspect it wont offer enough customizability to really feel like my playthrough will vary from another player who made different choices.

What I am unsure of:

  • Bases. I can see it becoming repetitive but so far, I've found 3 and they seem to vary in layout.
    • They're quite tough (I am playing on hard) and you die very quickly. Suites my gameplay preference of stealth. Run in, disable equipment, run out.
    • I wish the impact of "defeating" a base was more progressive. Once you beat a base, a cutscene plays out and the environment goes from dingey / abused, void of life to freshened up and full native species.

TL;DR Sitting between a 7 and 8 for me.

No editing done to these screenshots. Just photo mode for composition but matches 1:1 in real time. Some of the areas are giving me Morrowind vibes. Last one above is Unobtanium mode. I have to compress them to .jpg because the native .PNGs come in at 20-30mb per photo lol.

I don't want to spoil the Ikran sequence (build up to get to it) but once you bond with it, the game really opens up. Approx. 20hrs in, I made it to the next region (Upper Plains) where you can ride the direhorse. Upper Plains are super taxing on the GPU. Where I normally get 60-70fps with my settings, closer to 50fps. All that grass...

I took a break between 24th to New years but started to play again last night. Overall, I am still enjoying the game but at the 30hr mark (~50% completion), fatigue is unfortunately settling in. The game is still fun to play but the second region (planes), which I've spent a good 10hrs in now, is not as good as the first region (jungle). Less environment to traverse and take advantage of the good first person climbing and jumping. However, since it is so taxing, I've adjusted the FSR2 scaling from quality (67% reso) to balanced (58%) to avoid dropping below 40 fps and out of the VRR window of my TV.

The direhorse, while still fun and novel, is just an inferior and slower mount than your Ikran (flying banshee). I haven't seen or found a quest where it's needed nor does it have any unique abilities, compared to the Ikran, which I'll expand upon later. I feel like I am losing track of the main quest as missions begin to repeat and fall into the Ubisoft formula. It's unfortunate because this was shaping up to be one of my favourite surprise games of the year. For context, I destroyed what must be about 15 bases. I went back to the main board which tracks pollution across Pandora and it's at 17% clear. What? Unless the mechabases (large super ones tied to main quests) accommodate for at least 50% of the total pollution, there is no way I have the mental capacity to do anymore by choice / freewill.

It feels like these extra regions could have been DLC but for the stories sake (you need to tie all the regions together) it makes sense.

What I am enjoying more than when I initially started playing are the RPG skills. I originally thought they were lacking but I've obtained some new and interesting ones, like performing strikes, screeches, and wind gusts with my Ikran to attack or confuse enemies. Stealth ones started to stack nicely and playing on hard, you really need to use them as you die very, very quickly. Not ARMA level difficult but a few consecutive rounds (5-10) or a grenade and you're dead. I've put all my points into Stealth and Riding skills, Memories of the Hunter and Rider trees. The other trees are Vitality (health), Warrior (Attack / strength), and Maker (foraging / crafting.)

I also discovered there are two states of a base after you clear it out. The first, wild life enters and some foliage appears. The second (after time passes), its fully covered in nature, moss, weeds, vines etc. So I'd revise my initial impression of the bases. They're fun and fit within the theme, but just too many overall. Last note, not sure if a bug for me exclusively but in the photo mode, most of my foliage disappears or becomes fuzzy when the image is written to my drive. I only discovered this in the planes region because the quantity of foliage (grass) is insane. See example below. This area was so visually impressive but the photo lost about half the detail. If you zoom in, you will see half the foliage is there, but about 75% transparent.

image.thumb.jpeg.33a250212552318e399e8953340948d1.jpeg

Anyway, I still recommend the game but unless you are an Avatar fan (like me), wait for a sale. I will try to wrap it up ASAP so I can scratch this one off my list and move to Alan Wake 2

I pushed myself through a couple missions and discovered a few interesting areas in the Upper Plains. Not as bad as I originally thought. Found a unique area which seems to highlight a gorge, with all the stones smoothed off, washed, and rounded edges from a former river or body of moving water. It opens up the main plot again and provides something a bit more unique to the area. That being said, after I completed a couple missions (I'm on 18 out of 31 for the main campaign), I headed back to the main region to do some side quests and freshen up my perspective. Enjoying the game a bit more again. I was playing on my monitor (1440p) the past couple days so screenshots are lower res, but I disabled upscaling (it's native w. TAA). Most of the screenshots below are just "screenshots" by pressing F12, not photomode. I also tried making a couple videos using the built-in video recorder from AMD. I've never done this before so if looks like crap, my bad. I don't think the bitrate was high enough. First video is flying from the planes to hometree (main base in the jungle). Second video is a quest in the jungle where you need to transport a large moth. I failed it because I stressed out the moth too much by taking too much time, exposing it to too much "stress". Explorer mode is enabled so I have really have to find the location, which is part of the fun (for me).

Playing around with Youtube / recording. I made two more videos with a higher bitrate. 1st one is 1440p (native), SDR. 2nd one is 4K (Quality upscaling) HDR. It's a shame I couldn't get it to record in HDR (not sure how) but I hope these videos give a better insight how the visuals look in motion in different regions.

That actually looks like pretty good game. I will have to grab it when the price drop to around $20-$25. It looks like one I would enjoy (FPS fanboy here).

Nice! I dropped RDR 2, I need to restart and do a full playthrough at some point. RDR (1) is one of my all time favourite games.

It's my guilty pleasure of 2023. Plays more like Crysis than Fry Cry but it's definitely in that lane. I don't typically like to use the guns (bow and spear is more satisfying for me) but the weapons all feel and sound very good. I'm about 40 hrs in now and 67% complete. I feel you could beat it faster if you put it on normal and only did the main quests. Maybe 15-20hrs? TBD. Super fun to just explore and get lost in the nature. With the graphics, audio, playing on Hard with Explorer mode (hides HUD, waypoints etc.) it's really amps up the entire package for me. For example, in that first vid, I had a fun time just scoping out the base and taking my time.

If it plays like Crysis then I definitely need to get it when it falls into my game purchase range. The Crysis franchise is my favorite and the GOAT. I do not care for open world gameplay though. I lose interest swiftly. Linear FPS titles are the only ones I find captivating and play to the end, sometimes more than once.
