Q: How often do you find yourself swapping layout / configurations of your mech for missions?

fairly often, mostly for boss battles. It's easy to play for a while without changing the mech, but once you hit wall you might have to change your mech you 5+ times or so to get past the wall.

I haven't tried playing with the mouse and keyboard because I grew up playing these games on PS2 and I just want to use the controller for nostalgia if nothing else, but I've heard the PC controls work very well. Playing with the controller is definitely hard because it forces you to press more buttons to keep up with the combat than a game typically would. I don't mean like fast button presses, but constantly using all 4 shoulder buttons and the R3 and L3 buttons can be harder than it sounds, at least for me. I end up pressing the R3 and L3 buttons on accident because my grip is just too tight while trying to manage all 4 shoulder buttons in fast combat. I wish common game controllers like the xbox controller came in larger sizes, that would totally solve my issue.

AC6 is a lot of fun and I think anyone who has played an AC game before will be very happy with it. That said, while it is a well polished game, it's clear FromSoft didn't put the same level of effort into this game as they would with something like Elden Ring. Perhaps because this is the first AC game in a long time, they didn't know how well it would sell. It doesn't feel lacking, it just feels like a smaller project. I hope this is just the beginning for a new era of AC games. There is so much potential to build on what AC6 does. I'd love to see an AC game that wasn't held down by PS4 era hardware.

Gotch'ya 🙂 Btw, I play most PC games with a controller so no judgement here 🙂 Yes, I've heard that each shoulder / trigger button controls the right and left side of your mechs attack and defense.

Glad you're enjoying it. Definitely still on my list, even if it doesn't have the same effort as Elden Ring.

Decided to try the Sea of Stars demo whilst I wait for Starfield to unlock. It does not disappoint. If you're into old school JRPGs, give the demo a try. Plays a bit like Paper Mario with the combat too (timing button presses).

Cyberpunk 2077

High (Custom) Path Tracing & Ray Tracing - 4K

First time booting up CP2077 since 1.5 (early 2022) to actually play the game. I normally just use it for benchmarking or performance testing (custom benchmark). I was very surprised by how much better it feels and plays. I started to mess around in the city, I noticed thugs facing each other, with one group performing a drive by. I took out them out and police came after me and... very impressed. Feels like GTA with the road blocks and level of effort they now put into stopping you. I may need to FINALLY play the game.

First two screen shots are with Path Tracing enabled. I was getting 15fps at 4K with a 7900 XTX lol. The second two screenshots (police chase) is just with RT enabled and was around 40fps. Felt fairly smooth all thing considered.

7900XT here. Try this mod. I made a video about it a while ago. It reduces the bounce lighting from 2 bounces to 1. This will make some areas of the map darker, but you will get much more playable FPS.

Thanks, yes I might try that. My other settings are fairly optimized but this may push me closer to 60 fps at native 4K 🙂

Edit: I lied before. I was running Quality FSR 2 at 4K (it wasn't native... oh no!). I didn't realize until booted up the game again on the weekend.

Posting this here as there is a new guide for CP2077 settings with 2.0 / Phantom Liberty.

Alan Wake

This is the original release from 2012, not the remaster. Visually it holds up really well and looks great on an OLED. The gameplay (combat) gets repetitive so this isn't a title for everyone but if you enjoy a short game and thriller / psychological horrors, it's a good fit before Halloween and Alan Wake II releases (Oct 27).

I don't game a ton, but when I do it is often a benchmarking venture to see what I can get away with. I played BF 2042 for a couple of hours today to test my system "game stability" with the CPU and memory overclock. Buttery smooth with maxed out settings at 4K and the 4090 stock. CPU set for P-Cores 60x8, E-Cores 48x16, Cache 50x and memory at 8000 CL34-48-48-48-2T.

Kinda interesting seeing these. When I see videos of this game, it makes me think Ubisoft has taken a step back with their lighting model since Ghost Recon Wildlands, which I played a lot of, but looking at these screenshots here it seems to be at least on par. Wildlands was a very demanding game at the time, one could argue it was even too demanding for the hardware at the time. Still pretty demanding today. The lighting in that game always really impressed me. I almost seemed like it was using SVOGI.

The lighting can be very impressive depending on the time of day. Just note that all of those screenshots above are from the photo mode. It doesn't mean that in-game looks bad, but I've tweaked aperture and post-processing effects in game to jus it up.

I'll add some screenshots below, not from photo mode. I'd also flag that there are two notable scenarios or elements that look bad in my opinion. Some large open interiors during the day and faces (depending on the scene).

An example: I raided a large prison today and found, arguably the most bland area I've seen in the game. Once I went into the prison court yard, the direct sun light brought some life into it. I suspect largely due to the particle and volumetric effects (sun light hitting clouds of sand).

Example screenshots from the prison at 1440p (TAA native) max settings.

Figure 2. Exterior, same time of day, just outside in a courtyard.

Once I passed through this mission and area, night started to fall and the next interior with the local lights and candles changed the perceived visual quality immensely.

Now, if find a nice scene for lighting outside, even at 1440p, and use the photo mode, you can a better understanding of the difference.

I can't take screenshots with my controller when playing on the OLED (4K) because there is no shortcut / input on Ubisoft Connect but here is a "screenshot" in photomode with all the default settings (no additional post-processing). Which looks by and large, the exact same when playing at 4K in realtime.
