I recently did a thread titled 'Old HWBot warhorses makeover - fixing bent pins and other past sins' after visiting a storage area full of older parts...being in a computer related field, you can never have enough functioning 'old iron' for back-up, mundane tasks or retro gaming etc (I'm excluding machines here that have full server and firewall tasks here as a back-up location). In addition to my 'regular' machines that run daily (a TR / 2x 2080 Ti / MSI X399 Creation; the recently rebuilt 5960X / 2x 980 CL / Asus Rampage Ex IV; and a recently updated 6700K / 2x 780 Ti CL / Z170 SOC Force), I ended up deploying the fully rebuilt 4960X / 2x 980 CL / Asus X79-E WS) as a NAS + retro gamer. Now I'm left with a choice of deploying either a highly-binned 3770K / Asus Maximus Extreme V (e-atx + extra PCIe slots) or a highly-binned 4790K / Asus Maximus Formula VII (faster, fewer PCIe slots). Both setups were rebuilt and fully stress tested, but not completed / deployed...but the time has come to make a choice for another full retro build. I have all the other pieces (PSU, Case, GPU, HDDs). Rationally, I think the 4790K makes more sense, in part because of the much faster memory bandwidth...but emotionally, I'm really fond of the 3770K setup as that was one of the first hardcore daily + oc builds I ever did... What do you folks think ? Which one should get the nod for a build to pass the time before the next power build in early 2021 (Ryzen5K and/or TR Zen3) ? I'm itching to do a build before then, but only have space for 'one more'... As an aside, I also did manage to test out the old Abit 7 (G) / Pentium 4 below...even found the OCZ (rare) gold heat spreader RAM that went with it. It runs, but it's filthy - be thankful I converted pic to grey-scale -and I do not have an AGP card for it anymore, just some Virge S3 / DX PCI. Besides, I really don't want to fool around with IDE HDD 'master and slave' pins anymore. May be I clean it up and mount it as 'wall-art', the big Zalman Copper 'flower' cooler will look great once cleaned and with the right lighting. The '''loser''' of the above query re. 3770K and 4790K will probably end up right next to it on the wall...? ? ? :

I watched this earlier in the day, and yeah, nothing new to report really (other than the unwritten jab at GN re. their recent vid ?). I use at least 4 sticks (or more, depending on HEDT etc) and tune for 'CL' preference over maxing outright MHz near the limit

I never make any errors - coz once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken ...so getting one of my finger caught in a 3K rpm fan (yes, there was blood) never could have happened...nor the time I wanted to clean a complex custom water loop w/ CPU and 4x GPU blocks and decided to speed it up by putting the whole bottle of concentrate in (instead of the recommended number of drops per liter)...bye bye O-rings

...a quick heads-up re. 'Rolling Cache': MS FS 2020 had two big patches last week...one of them changes your rolling cache path back to the original default location by mistake...I ended up with a '0' GB rolling cache, to my great horror. Fortunately, the 200 GB rolling cache I had built up on another M.2 drive was still there. After fixing the path in MS FS / Options / Data and saving the changes, everything got finally back to normal, even after rebooting. ...given various problems other users also have had with Microsoft patches for this sim, you would think they would make these (often giant download) patches NOT mandatory before you can even start up the sim and play again...

Igor's Lab has a recent article that focuses on the 6900 XT 'Turbo mode' (<> in addition to 'Rage mode'). Interestingly, his AMD GPU 'MorePower Tool' is also ready to play already with 6800 XT and 6900 XT. ? The GPU example he used gave an extra PL of up to 15% (300 W > 345W) with options for board partners to perhaps push a bit beyond, depending on their cooling solution(s)...personally, I hope Aorus will offer a factory full w-block version of the 6900 XT 'xtr' Overall, 6900 XT(s) could be a nice addition for an all-AMD build project for 2021 ? Still, I also like to see more news about the 7nm TSMC NV 3090(s). Either way, 2021 will be an interesting year to put a new system together source

...not sure if this is applicable to Ryz5K dual chiplet designs such as 5950X (and 5900X) as the tests were done on a 5600X, but this is interesting re. best RAM configs for Zen3 - could also be worthwhile to check this on X570 mobos with different topology (Daisy Chain vs T topology). In any case, Zen3 seems to like all the RAM slots filled...: Speaking of RAM, here is an update vid (in German) by DerBauer running a 5950X with Infin clock at 2000 MHz, along with a nice DDR4 4000 C18 kit...btw, in an earlier vid, DerBauer also relayed Elmor's finding (for LN2 XOC only) that there currently seems to be a built-in CPU MHz cap for Ryz5K at around 6040 MHz, independent of displayed CPUz. This though doesn't affect any 'real' speed below the 6040 MHz, i.e. on water etc

Mt. Waddington & Glacier flying fun After multiple test flights landing on ice, I finally did 'the trip' I was planning to Mount Waddington and its glacier valleys, one of which runs down from 13,000 feet or so to the sea (Knight's Inlet) with not interruption - an awesome sight. I just love the area around Knight's Inlet. Low-level lacier flying is far trickier than I first thought - a lot of shaking due to thermals and temp differences, not to mention winds in the glacier valley. As to landing on a glacier, I found some hard-frozen but smooth stretches at a slight incline to help slow down quickly works best... Per map below, the red dots depict the approach from Knight's Inlet, flying high up over the mountains to Mt. Waddington and almost hitting the service ceiling of the Icon A5...the purple dots show the route down via the glacier valley... ...leaving Knight's Inlet (lower right) ...gaining altitude (slowly)... Mt. Waddington in the distance... Glacier below... Checking out the conditions for landing... Yup... After departing on zeroing in on the glacier run, I noticed another nice smooth ice field for landing across.. ...on the way there, looking back at Mt. Waddington... Now it's time for the low 'flight down' to Knight's Inlet... ...a lot of shaking due to thermals and wind 'tunnel'... ...almost there... Back at the inlet, ready for a water landing

...I am partially kidding of course, but that said, I am very interested in the future version of unlinked / explicit multi adapter tech, which IMO will replace the aging crossfire / sli. Long story short, it *might* be helpful with a Ryzen 5(950)X to impart some of the 'full AMD-only ecosystem' benefits to a NV 3090... ...thinking about a system that would stay current for five yeas plus, and ready to exploit the new mGPU tech. Why ? Why not ? mGPUs of the same type in one system have been around for a while (two 8xGPU setups below)...but, I'm just dreaming in technicolor while waiting for the next build project in the new year...

That's a nice Threadripper home server build you got there ! Re. cooling, I have been using a CPU-only loop with a Heatkiller IV Pro Nickel-Copper for a TR2+ 2950X @ 4.275 to 4.325 all-core, along with 2x XSPC RX 360s. Absolutely zero problems for two years now, even with heavy use
