  1. ...your GPU's serial number should unkey to the production date, but your would need Asus customer service assistance to do it... ...Yeston GPUs are so far beyond weird-looking that they almost qualify for cute (if you're 11 years old...). The Galax HOF OCL actually have the nicest-looking and performing PCB, but their oddly ornamented cooler and accessories with crowns everywhere look like graffiti (IMO) on it. The special Galax HOF OCL versions hold most of the Firestrike and Timespy HWBot records, though. I know someone in the US who always gets the latest Galax HOF, but he mods them anyway, so the RMA 'process' is mostly irrelevant to him. He just ordered the Bykski block for the Galax 4090 HOF (afaik, the only Galax 4090 HOF waterblock) and that cleans up the appearance. ...have you ever heard of Kudan ? They make the others, including Galax and Asus Strix, look cheap (see inserted prices for previous versions, 4090 was just announced recently)...
  2. That's one way to eat disguise your veggies
  3. What is the core oc'ing like on your 4090 Strix OC ? I know someone else who just got a new Strix a few days ago (store-bought afaik) and his core-oc is 'decent' but not special, though VRAM oc is among the best I have ever seen (close to +2000). I wonder if the one you got was older stock. Don't get me wrong re. the table above, TPU is among my fav trusted sources - but they won't have more than a few samples to work with, and early 4090s were all over the place. My water-cooled Giga-G-OC for example benches at up to 3.24 G core at ambient temps. VRAM at +1540 as long as it is warmed up, and some weird memory holes above that (+1702 works, but not less or more). I do think though that Micron GDDR6X 2GB chip VRAM has been getting better with more recent samples which is why I wonder about the production date of your card. FYI, overall, my experience with Asus has been mostly positive with top-end mobos and GPUs, exception being the X99 gen which had some wild early bios voltages for VCCSA that liked to kill CPUs (they fixed that later on). I had one major GPU RMA experience with Asus which they handled really well, ditto for MSI.
  4. FS2020 > Bing > new copilot ChatGPT_ing ??
  5. ... notwithstanding its 'age', I often return to Need for Speed: Most Wanted. It may be 'old' but it it still a ton of fun, IMO. Also, it has received a fair amount of updates, patches and what seems like new content over the years. On my way to the airport (which allegedly is the most dangerous time when flying)... ...arrived ! ...getting snacks at 57 km/h ...and back to FS2020 - learning to fly the Bell Helicopter / decided to 'try' in the Ethiopian Highlands for baby steps jumps. ...crashing at 4K ultra adds 'painful' realism
  6. ...Cessna 152 at 275k feet ? I hope you had an oxygen mask and a thick coat ! FYI #1 - Another FS 2020 fan recommends > this Boeing Thrustmaster setup; kind of pricy though, even at $100 off. I am quite happy with the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and the XBox controller (I use both at the same time). FYI #2 ...another patch today. At first I wasn't sure what it was about when I went for a quick Alpenglow flight near here in the trusty Beaver. Then I noticed 'her'...I think you can have a conversation with your passenger - I wonder if that is Chat GPT (since FS2020 is incorporating Bing anyways)
  7. ...I'll let you know after my next round trip
  8. ...that floppy drive and I/O shield takes me back ...also had Quantum HD drives but a different kind. Below is a still-shrink-wrapped ATX 2.01 PSU from ~ 20 years ago...I always kept identical back-ups for our early-days business '''machines''' when we initially started out, but this one never got called to action.
  9. Noice ! ...I have tried to get the F18 on real physics flight model above 50,000 feet and it started to get tricky (I also recall reading that 75K feet was a built-in limit in earlier versions of FS2020 for any plane). But as posted before, there's this little flight I did...275K feet...very cold up there
  10. ...Antarctica is not what it used to be - instead, I already got a cottage out in the Boomerang Nebula - comes with auto round-trip
  11. ...you start benching a CPU or GPU with the stock air-cooler...dissatisfied, you add a custom air-cooler...dissatisfied, you add an AIO...dissatisfied, you add custom water-cooling...dissatisfied you add bigger custom water-cooling...dissatisfied, you add a phase cooler...dissatisfied, you add a custom pot for DICE...dissatisfied, you add LN2 for the pot...dissatisfied, you are looking for a Liquid Helium supplier...dissatisfied you...
  12. ...your posted prices in Europe have to include the VAT, unlike posted prices in N-America. Still, 4090s had a big increase in supply and prices are steady-if-not-down. According to a big retailer I spoke to last week, they still move off the shelves, but it takes 2 -3 days compared to the 2 - 3 hours before... Without VAT, my 4090 came in at EURO 1535 back in late October 2022 at today's exchange rate, with 21% VAT, that would be EURO ~1858...still a decent price for its 3240 MHz top bench speed at room-ambient-temps, though. I wonder how long it will take @Mr. Fox to slap that Asus XOC 1000 W vbios on there (I have it for mine but am 'making do' with the Galax 667 W vbios as the Asus XOC has all the safeties removed).
  13. ...I seem to recall s.th. about "slippery slope" ... Congrats, and have fun with that thing (I know you will). Model specs, ie. Watt cooling, lowest temp ?. Also just keep in mind that their transient response can be a bit slow, depending on what is being benched (ie. 4 core vs 16 core). In some such cases, it helps to just 'pre-stress' the PC before the bench you want to run.
  14. ...they are getting better and better with that - new yachts, freighters, fishing boats, tugs, LNG ships...living in a coastal city right by the ocean, I am bit of a naval fan anyway. Speaking of water, below is the Beaver w/floats for an early morning cruise above our home w/real weather (cropped and converted to .jpg)
  15. ...may be it is time to buy a whole bunch more powerful ATX 3.0 PSUs ? Hopefully, AMD will hurry it up with their new Zen4 HEDT and we'll have a nice price war may be
  16. ...in addition to the Unreal 5 segments in the above Coreteks' YouTube vid released yesterday, Unreal 5 engine fans can enjoy some earlier material on it, such as: ...and here is a vid I posted before on an Unreal 4 engine game which I actually have ( @bonami2& others commented on earlier because it is wild in its own right). One thing is for sure, video game graphics are set for another big upgrade in 'realism' in the near future - and I am looking forward to that ! In a few years, OLED 8K 240 to go with all that ?
  17. It probably helps to have a good RAM kit to begin with before trying to manually tune it - I have been down that rabbit hole so many times for over a decade. Eventually, one gets ready to rip one's hair out but It can really make a system fly though if done and tested right. And yes, Ryzen 7950X/3D will likely love very tight timings more than speed (Hardware Unboxed did a recent vid on that, including using Buildzoid's timings). With the specific DDR4 kits I have, I dropped speeds to 3800 but can also run CL13...I am hoping to read more about upcoming DDR5 A-die DR kits and see how they behave along those lines; trading bandwidth for timings...still early days for DDR5 A-die Dual Rank, though.
  18. Well, there always is something new round the corner - it is how the industry functions. For example, I posted the vid below yesterday in News/rumour mill but it disappeared from that segment...anyway, some of the Unreal 5 engine and related tech looks awesome.
  19. On the RAM, did you see what I wrote there ? " I know that 7200 speed won't likely work with the 7950X/3D but for other reasons which include upcoming HEDT builds, I want to settle on as few DDR5 versions as possible for interchangeability down the line." ...Simply put, I am planning the same approach I took with DDR4 re. a particular type and speed of GSkill DDR4 which I use interchangeably on Intel HEDT and desktop as well as AMD desktop and HEDT. Anyway, it looks like my AM5 build will have the same dimensions as one of the two AM4 ATX builds I showed in the pic above, so the 'exchange' if and when should take no longer than a weekend or so. PSU-wise, I am using a Seasonic Prime Platinum PX1300 for the current (up to 265W) 5950X and 675W max RTX 4090. I think the 7950X3D exchange won't require a PSU upgrade as there still is plenty of additional headroom. That said, the next PSU(s) I will purchase will all have to be ATX 3.0 and 1300W or higher.
  20. ...some interesting tidbits regarding AMD's RDNA4 GPUs - and also some nice tech dive into upcoming graphics techniques, including into Unreal 5 & Co
  21. I am genuinely looking forward to multiple & trustworthy 3rd-party reviews of the upcoming 7950X3D next week, also re. its asymmetric chiplet design impact on OS and apps. I may not like differing chiplets in the same CPU but that and/or P+E cores are probably here to stay, unless one moves into the high-end HEDT space. The other thing I am still waiting for is some seriously clocked & low timings 32 GB Dual Rank A-die sticks, s.th. at least as fast as 7200 DDR5 (lower speed Dual Rank A-die already exists). I know that 7200 speed won't likely work with the 7950X/3D but for other reasons which include upcoming HEDT builds, I want to settle on as few DDR5 versions as possible for interchangeability down the line. I am not too worried about cooling the 7950X3D though - my 5950X has hit 265 W when fully oc'ed, and its cooling system - one of two loops below - has 1320x63 mm rads and dual D5 pumps (used to have 3x D5s, but I downsized it ...). Regarding 'case' and all that, I don't foresee too many issues (other than that itch to build s.th. new and different yet again). The 5950X Dark Hero / RTX 4090 combo at the lower right would simply move to the upper left and displace the CH8 Hero WF with the 3950X that in turn will move on to other work-related tasks in another build. FYI, I also recommend the use of Koolance QD4s (lower left below) as they make swapping components a lot easier, especially with big complex dual loops. I have used this type of QD since 2014 or so and very much like and recommend them.
  22. ...yeah, I noticed that. It must be a vbios thing. On my cards below, it correctly identifies the 'GPU model type', but the Asus 3090 is actually running the EVGA KingPin 520 vbios while the Giga-G-OC 4090 is running the Galax HoF vbios.
