Puget Systems: Critical Samsung SSD Firmware Update
J7SC_Orion replied to EHW Ai's topic in Hardware News
The new 990 Pro are apparently affected as well (2 TB again); firmware update still a question for the 990s: -
Thanks for the trip down memory lane --- I built a 3770 K / Z77 Maximus V Extreme back in late 2012 (still have all the bits). That was also the first CPU I ever delidded (razor blade in those days, with blood splatter) and applied liquid metal to...accidental LM droplets 'skillfully placed' between mobo traces. It could (can) run up to 5.2 giggles on water. But that was then, these days, hardware is a lot more capable and much easier to handle. As @bonami2 suggested above, an AMD AM5 setup might be a fairly good bet as it is a fairly new socket, while Intel's competing LG 1700 is expected to be replaced soon. For video editing, there are also the much more expensive HEDT platforms (Threadripper / Pro and the like), but these days, it may make more sense to get an AM5 Ryzen (12c/24t or 16c/32t), some fast large-capacity NVME and other storage. I would spend the rest on the latest and biggest GPU that fits your budget...FYI, on video editing, OBS Studio now has support for the RTX 4090 dual AV1 encoders. I use that card and 24 GB of GDDR6X is highly useful there...beyond that is the RTX 6000 Ada w/ 48 GB of regular GDDR6 (for more than double the $s) Lots of options for you in a slowing market.

A well performing 5950X combined w/ the 2x LAN Dark Hero mobo, fast RAM and a 4090 is all I really need(ed) since I play exclusively at 4K (FS2020, CP 2077, Ride4, ForzaH 5, F1 2021 etc). I may be short a few fps compared to AM5 or Z690/790, but in CP 2077 with the latest patches, my average 4K ultra fps is > 130 anyway (on a OLED 4K / 120); FS 2020 around 115 to 120 fps at 4K ultra. Bonus: No P+E cores, no differential CCXs, no 'arguments' with the Windows 10 Pro scheduler. I will of course still upgrade in due course, but I doubt that I will actually notice, other than in benchies.

...secret test footage of the new down-sized Aventador ?
-
...yeah, re. LAN and PCIe lanes, I keep on referencing 'work + play, productivity' and so forth...it's like being a contractor who wants a pick-up truck with a certain minimum payload capacity ...As to DDR5 32GB DR sticks, the ones I want aren't out yet > 7200 MT A-die. I plan to buy several of this type for mix-and-match applications across different Intel and AMD...
-
...re. LAN daughter card, it takes up valuable PCIe on a desktop (rather than HEDT) mobo. I do admire your courage re. Samsung 990 Pro (I use several 980 Pro), given the various stories about 'disappearing' space. On the 980 Pro, the 2 TB versions are apparently also affected but after recent tests, mine seem to be ok. Hopefully, a firmware update by Samsung for the 990 Pro will fix it w/o gimping the speed. What DDR5 are you getting ? I'm still holding out for a certain type of 32 GB DR sticks.

Do Or Don't - The Neverending Story Of Windows 11
J7SC_Orion replied to PCSarge's topic in Operating Systems
I switched one machine back from Windows 11 Pro back to Windows 10 Pro as the former is even more of a big-data sucking apparatus that has zero problems violating privacy and IP. I also build two Linux systems using older hardware and my plan is for emails and documents just to use those. A quick anecdote: As context, my firm is among other areas active in developing Intellectual Property protection software. I was emailing one of our shareholders about some things, and after I sent that somewhat lengthy email, I wanted to check s.th. I had written after I had sent it. To my horror, the Windows email program in Win 11 Pro had 'hidden' it, with a link to their servers. I hasten to add that I never use Microsoft's OneDrive (as an aside, no Facebook, either for me). In addition to this, I noticed that after a few months or so, my general sent and received emails 'disappeared' from my system and are only accessible on the cloud (see above re. no cloud account). This is just one of many horror stories as to how deep Microsoft (and others) are burrowing into your private and business life...I did switch to Mozilla Thunderbird as my main email program, but the Microsoft email program can be hidden but not truly removed (somebody please correct me - would love to know for sure). At the end of the day, Ai is fast becoming all the rage and is creating all kinds of headaches re. copyright and various other legal concepts. The point is that if AI is the engine, big data is the fuel and big corporate tech along with a few governments have no problem adding your data to big data, whether you like it or not, never mind agreed to it. Thus my ongoing switch to Linux for emails, browsing and office suites (LibreOffice). > related...will get worse before it will get better -

@Andrew...I was playing FS 2020 tonight on that older work machine to which I recently added the 3090. I noticed that I could toggle NVidia Reflex on and off, even when using AMD FSR 2 'Quality' instead of DLSS(2.x) 'Quality'. Do you see the same with your RTX 2K setup ? Not sure if it makes a difference, I am on the latest NVidia driver / 4K res.

...another option for me is to just wait for the Zen-4 Threadrippers which often have boards with dual LAN - never mind a lot more PCIe lanes. Unfortunately, AMD isn't the underdog anymore like it still was around late 2018 when I picked up two nice TR boards at reasonable prices, in relative terms, back then.
-
Every mobo I bought since 2014 has dual LAN , whether Intel HEDT, AMD TRs or X570...Below in the pic are two, ahem, cases with four mobos, six GPUs and 8x LAN, and apart from needing dual LAN (re. productivity) I also don't plan to downgrade though I may have to eat my words later... For now, I am going to try to find more third-party info on the Asus X670E Creator ProArt; I know you don't seem to like it re. RAM, but with 7950X3D coming out, they'll get a new bios anyways...besides, I have a secret plan
-
That's really helpful ! ...But in a way it is also 'disturbing', at least when it gets to comparing nice AM4 mobos with nice AM5. I have a couple of Asus CH8 X570, and the Asus CH8 Dark Hero in particular is superb from board to bios features. The closest thing in the AM5 670E costs about twice as much...never mind that the CH8 DarkHero itself is also $100 more than when I purchased it.

...well, that explains everything...

Cyberpunk 2077 HD Reworked Project
J7SC_Orion replied to bonami2's topic in Journalism & Entertainment
Grumpy ? Toothache ? I knew about the Google map mod but figured Microsoft had plugged that by now. In any case, MSFS 2020 is getting a lot of patches these days, and a custom-hack might throw a monkey wrench into patch / update things. BTW, AMD FSR 2 works great in MSFS 2020 even with NV cards ! -
You are only the 4th person I know who (m)uses it - so MMO is out of the question , but I like my forest empty of people anyways... FYI, I had added this little thread because of @Sir Beregond 's comment in @Nikado7 'Highlights of your day' thread
-
...I like that open rear hatch trick FYI, running various filters (little windows have descriptions in the title). Obviously a .png of multiple .jpg so some degradation, and sometimes the display numbers were in the middle of changing, but overall, it gives some clues. Positive surprise of the bunch: AMD FSR2 'Quality' (w/ NV Reflex ?) - worst of the bunch AMD FSR2 'Superperformance'

Cyberpunk 2077 HD Reworked Project
J7SC_Orion replied to bonami2's topic in Journalism & Entertainment
a.) ...you were already crazy, and we're all getting old anyways, entropy and all that b.) CP2077 was a RTX release title; at 4K everything ultra, RTX (= psycho) and DLSS 'quality', it looks very different on my C1 OLED compared to (trying to) play it on my AMD 6900XT. The 4090 can even run it at TAA full RTX - that's when it becomes stunning, IMO. c.) this game has a certain genre of visuals, almost anime-like with a good portion of Bladerunner. You folks sound like chaps who go to a buffet in a restaurant with a hundred different types of foods, but you only pile on 5 pounds of horseradish - and complain that there's too much horseradish... d.) I already linked some realistic Unreal 4 game (with anticipation about Unreal 5). When I go to a buffet in a restaurant, I take more than one thing...Here is a good helping of photorealism 'on my plate', noting that some of which are downgraded from .png to .jpg, but still... -
...I get cranky when I do not have enough free space / time for myself. It makes the rest of the time of togetherness worth more, IMO. BTW, for some free roaming while stuck at home, > here is one remedy I've used for a decade
