EHW has a very nice mix of technical competency and 'pioneering spirit', IMO, compared to other more corporate cookie-cutter boards. It will be important to try to keep that pioneering spirit alive as the site grows and starts to attract many more members and corporate (advertiser. other) interest, as it undoubtedly will... ...as to 'dark theme', yes please - I'm starting to work and play now on big 4K monitors exclusively, and staring at a 40 inch or 55 inch, mostly white and/or bright screen gives me in my eyes

videocardz NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080(Ti) 20GB allegedly tested

I am amazed how good the combo of 'open' airflow and low noise is with those 8-year-old TT AIO fans that have been continuously running in one build or another...a 4 C drop on the memory of the Strix 3090 with its 24 GB is significant, especially with GDDR6X. Now, it is just a question to put 'The Thing together nicely with a mix of old and new hardware...a nice X570 / 5950X would have been better, but this combo is decent enough....for 'The Thing' -

...I finally found a backplate-cooling solution that is quiet yet works great - two ancient TT AIO 120mm fans (which I had exchanged for Noctuas during the AIO rebuild). Compared to other fan solutions, they dropped the highest VRAM chip temp by 4 C...yet you can hardly hear them, if at all. Now its time to start getting this thing off the floor (below) after finishing the setup and oc testing and move it into 'The Thing', a dual mobo contraption for our master-br that also includes the Gigabyte Z170 Force...just got plan ahead now re. positioning for the GPU w-block and peripherals later on -

With the Strix 3090, there's extra space (may be 2 inches?) on the right beyond the PCB once the air cooler is off (please see TPU pic below). That said, I test-fitted the Strix in a CM Stryker case and it just (but just) fit length wise...and then decided to mount it in an 'open frame'. As mentioned, even with the GPU w-cooled, you need to pay attention to the backplate, fans, air-evac etc I am actually planning a w-cooled front and w-cooled back (back via older Swiftech universal GPU coolers I have) once I get around to it. -

If you're NOT watercooling the GPU (you were talking about a 3090 afaik), you might want to think about an open case...no really. With a waterblock on the other hand, those cards are much shorter and 'thinner' and you shouldn't have a problem. I'm thrilled with the 3090 Strix, but apart from being huuuge and heavy, it really pumps the watts...the backplate in particular (with those extra VRAM chips) heats up and that heat has to go somewhere. I will eventually watercool the Strix, but for now, it is in an open frame case. Temps are actually quite good for the GPU and even VRAM itself, but only because it can evacuate the hot air quickly...note this stock bios read-out with Win 10 in power-saving mode and NV Panel on 'normal' (instead of 'prefer maximum performance') under power setting ? : -
Yeah, the new build with the Strix is using that, an AX1200 from circa 2013ish...in those days, I did some HWBot w/ quad-sli, so I bought two of the AX1200. They both still work fine, though they didn't run the entire 8 or so years as I had also picked up two Antec HPC 1300s and a BeQuiet 1200 (quad SLi on sub-ambient and CPU on sub-zero = ? power consumption). The irony is that I haven't bought a new PSU since those days and missed the whole shortages thing...and the loony price rises for those

As mentioned, I do have a need for more than 10 GB (both 4K productivity + gaming). That said, I had almost given up until I stumbled upon the Strix 3090 which was just being checked in to the store's shelving...still even had the wholesale shipping info on it. Anyway, those things are not cheap, but I got it at MSRP and no tariff...scalper-free zone ? (well, unless you view NVidia as one...) -
...held my breath for a moment after reading the story - I just used an (older) Corsair 1200 for a new 3090 Strix...great clocker, but does this (on stock bios): Fortunately, my PSU is not the Corsair HX1200...for a moment there, I though I would have to remove the PSU on a new build, along with all the cabling ?

...two out of four systems (not counting developmental and back-up servers etc) in my home-office are on 4K monitors. One 4K system uses dual w-cooled 2080 Tis, but the other is still on 2x/SLI 980 Classifieds, as I usually skip a GPU generation. However, 4K at 4GB VRAM is not fun... ...you're right re. the length (and for that matter weight ? ) of the 3090 Strix OC, but it does fit into one of the cases currently hosting a pair of 980s. Besides, I plan to w-cool the 3090 as soon as possible. ...for my use-cases, whether for business and/or personal, I won't invest in a new GPU in 2021 that doesn't have AT LEAST 16GB of VRAM. That doesn't make the price drop any lower, but I know I got a decent deal today, even if it was a business expense... -
...indeed, I am conscious that it is, but I'm in the computer related field and it is a business purchase. I had been looking since October, and this is exactly the card I wanted, and at the best price so far...

Yeah, I decided to not wait any longer re. will they/won't they actually release a 20GB 3080 Ti, especially as an unexpected opportunity arose this morning By the time the 3080 / Ti 20 GB VRAM does appear and gets hyped in reviews, it will be out-of-stock, out-of-stock' again anyhow. -
...went to the store to 'save some money' on the Arctic P12 pwm fan 5-pack - and I did ! ...I also had been looking for a Strix RTX 3090 OC for a while and almost gave up - but there it was by its lonesome self (just came in ? ). Fortunately, Asus imports directly into Canada, so no tariff...came out to US $ 1,877 (before the Arctic P12 5-pack)

Yeah, but 3080 Ti rumours are like the cat w/ nine lives...or as Arnold likes to put it... -
Not sure if this has already been covered, but there are persistent rumours that the NVidia Turing RTX 2060 - and possibly the RTX 2060 Super - are about to be reintroduced to the market (pass the salt). Still, the tried-and-true 12nm Finfet process might just help to plug persistent supply shortages of the newer 8nm (and some 7nm) RTX 3k, at least for the segment the RTX 2060 covers. Some rumours also have the RTX 2060 Super joining the resurrection party, while others suggest it will only be the 'regular' RTX 2060 ...can a re-branded 2080 Ti be far behind ? ? source

..one of those new WRX80 TR Pro workstation monsters (which come with 2x U.2) would be nice with 2x Intel's new P5800X Optane (PCIe 4.0) in RAID ...one probably could even add M.2 to U.2 adapters and then two more P5800X before ever even using one of the PCIe 4.0 x 16 slots . Sounds like a great plan ...until one hits the checkout / cashier ?

I am sure that the '3080 Ti' exists, just as the 2080 Ti 'Super' apparently existed (but was never released, depending how you categorize the MSI Gaming Z {not X} Trio). Whether they'll release the 3080 Ti remains to be seen, but I figure eventually 'yes', probably just later than originally planned. If the GPUz screenie is accurate, it seems to suggest the same number of Cuda as the 3090 and the same GDDR6X, just 20 GB instead of 24 GB...could actually be a killer card for oc'ing -

I think they are a couple of issues intertwining that led to issues I described, noting again that the game itself has never crashed, just the loading of CP2077 after disrupted patch/Hotfix downloads. To begin with, the game only came out 1 / 1/2 month ago, and the sheer number of Hotfixes and patches issued in that period are part of the problem, and also well documented to cause other problems in turn (see above). It speaks of a release that wasn't really ready, as much as I personally never had any issues 'in game' from day one with any patch once loaded correctly. Secondly, the trend of online game suppliers such as Steam, Microsoft Store, Origin and many others to load themselves into YOUR home and YOUR computer network at startup and call to their server even when the app is not started is appalling - and also part of the problem. AI needs big data, so their vacuums are there by default (I unload them as much as possible)... The same holds for the fact that even when you have a perfectly-running game 'before' a new patch / fix, you still cannot play it as the provider insists on loading the new patch first before you can start your gaming session. I have had similar issue with MS FlightSim 2020 (though not the crash following a patch). If they wouldn't force millions of people to all try to download typically large files at more or less the same time, network loads at near-DoS levels would not lead to the disruptions... My fav exhibit (on a network here that has another computer right next monitoring the health 'my' network): I remember the 'good old days' when you could download a game and keep the setup files on your computer...then every once in a while you would get a notification that a patch was available - key is that it wouldn't block you from playing until you had downloaded it. When you felt like it, you could download a patch later and store it as well. We need a digital rights bill with teeth ! Next, when loads at the patch-providing servers lead to a crawl or standstill, or the user decides to 'pause' and do something else, some steps have to take place to ensure that a resumption of the download is seamless...and therein is the issue buried I now experienced twice on two separate patches/hotfixes within a week. It's not unlike an encrypted file that got corrupted with a non-matching checksum. Whether this problem is at Steam's end or CDPR's end I do not know yet. However, MS FS 2020 also has had some giant patches which could slow the system down so much that load indicators would stop showing any progress. However, resumption on a subsequent try/ reboot fused it all together correctly, without crashes when the app itself was finally loaded. Finally, there is the lack of decent support by both Steam and CDPR when using their support / help registration pages. Since the first crash issue arose last Sunday and I followed their instructions on submitting a support request, I haven't heard a thing from either (apart from Steam's acknowledgement that they got my request)...it's now Friday -

yeah, I've been suggesting it's a network issue...the point is though that it happened twice in one week at separate occasions (patch 1.1 and Hotfix 1.1) and as mentioned, the network I'm on is monitored and not the issue, nor has this crept up with any other big patches (FlightSim 2020 comes to mind...) whereby the host server is overrun and my download temporarily pauses (and not for 143 days... ?) I am just not sure whether it is at Steam's or CDPR's end - and it would be nice if either would respond within a few days of asking for support...or may be they're just too busy... -

...haven't had any actual in-game crashes either, just when getting there with the latest patch / hotfix (per above, only 143 days to go before load...) ? -
...thanks, @Laithan ...Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 deserves the credit as it is easy to adore and thus invest a bit of time in to share, especially given the accuracy re. area I live in - I usually start my workday early by driving to the local mountains (only 20 min away, unless rush hour) for a quick hike and also some reading over a nice coffee, and I actually use Flight Simulator 2020 (set to live weather...) to help pick a particular spot, like this local ski area...
