  1. Folding Performance Based On Differing PCIe bandwidth settings During this build process which essentially making a mining rig into a Folding rig, the loud question we have all been asking is, does going down to PCI-E 1x bandwidth affect TPF and PPD to a point where you see horrible performance loss. Thus far thanks to @tictoc we gave been able to do some comparisons to see what sort of loss you are looking at if you go from folding at PCI-E 16x bandwidth to 1x. Take a look at the table below. If anyone is interest in purchasing then please send me a PM. I am UK based so please be aware that international shipping is a little more expensive but nothing crazy. Please be aware these items are listed elsewhere so it will be on a first come first serve basis. *NEW* Nidec Servo Gentle Typhoon D1225C12B5AP 120mm 1850 rpm Silent Case Fans (No longer widely available) Quantity 8 Of Remaining £20 Each or £35 for a pair.
  2. Hello all, I am pleased to announce that we will be looking to put setup a dedicate folding machine that will fold on behalf of ExtremeHW and its members. Not only is Folding@Home a fantastic cause that we want to continue contributing to, we also appreciate that contributing to Folding can be an expensive venture on the higher end and not all will be able to afford to put together an entire folding system for themselves or have the time. It is with that we have decided to open up a community folding project ! So what does this entail ? The folding machine in question will be a dedicated GPU folding machine. As most of us know, GPU folding is the most efficient and it only made sense to go with a multiple GPU setup. For this build we will be going for an 6x GPU system. The neat thing about this is whenever we need to upgrade the system, it will only be the GPU's we have to look at, we like it simple! As this will be a community project we are hoping that of those that are able to, can donate towards this cause. This will help us get the components for the build that we need to really make this rig the best it can be. ExtremeHW will of course be putting in its own resources into making this happen. All donations received will go into the community folding project ONLY. Any donations received after the build is completed will go to A. The running of the machine & B. The next GPU upgrade. You can donate here: DONATE VIA PAYPAL We are also looking for reputable sponsors to join us in this noble cause, so if anyone would like to come forward or if anyone knows of a sponsor that would like to get involved then please send me a message. **UPDATE** We are pleased to announce that Overclockers UK & TeamGroup have stepped up to the mark and supported our project by supplying us with the SSD and RAM components required. You can see exactly what they have kindly sponsored us below. A huge thanks to OCUK and TeamGroup ! 3. Some of the gentlemen in this podcast sound very handsome, one of them sounds like they also have a distinctive face !
  4. Welcome ! Good to see you joined up, by the way it was good to meet you last night....wait that sounds dirty.
  5. Yeah luckily the CPU and GPU's crunch the numbers really well to be honest. I would leave the rig on 24/7 for folding but right now it is in my room and my other half just cannot sleep with noise, though I could sleep in a server room...just does not affect me hah.
  6. Haha, I get that guilt too lol. At some point once I move I will look into a dedicated folding rig. Just do not have the room for it now...or the money lol.
  7. Yes that is a live Google sheet embed, well live so far as it gets updates every hour or so, thanks to a importing CSV from his stats server to the Google Sheet. We are working on a full fledged Folding stat system for this site which is exiting, but more news on that at at a later date For sure, well we will certainly love to have you back afterwards bud. I will try and keep them staggered with OCN where possible
  8. Another great thing about VM's is they are super easy to restore should something untoward happen. In the business world it is better to part out your I.T services across VM's. The good thing is if one goes down, then you are only missing 1 or 2 business services as opposed to all of them if you were keeping all your services on the host OS or a single VM. Also worth noting that in the server world, you cannot install some applications alongside a domain controller (such as some backups applications) as such VM's come into play as you can have the DC on one VM and the backup application on another VM, while all on the same physical system. Negates the needs of having to have 2 or 3 physical machines, you now only need the one machine with a few VM's running.
  9. Just as an update our total submitted Work Units thus far comes to 2585. Fantastic work as always. Even with those dry spells we are still packing them away
  10. The bandwidth can be hurt by the risers/conversion ribbons. That is why I was looking at a board (Mining board) with full PCI-E 16x slots, in order to negate some of the lost performance. Luckily they do exist : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Colorful-...97.m4902.l9144
  11. No probs bud. If you get stuck then give us a shout
  12. Vm's via VMWARE are very simple. Aside from downloading and installing VMWARE, you will want to download an ISO of the operation system you are going to use in the Vm. These are readily available on the internet but for the sake of simplicity you can download Windows 10 ISO here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10ISO If you are going for Windows 7, I use this as my source: https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-iso-download-tool Fantastic tool and can also Grab Windows 10 if needs be. Once you run VMWARE it guides you through the process, much of it is self explanatory. The good thing is you get to configure the Vm as if you are building a PC...sort of, as you can configure what anount resources it uses from your hardware, what it can and cannot use etc. You will have some fun. Vm's are a big part of I.T life, so gaining experience with it will help for the future. Once you install one, I promise you, you will think of other things you could do in a VM rather than doing it on your host operating system
  13. Yeah pretty much bud, you will end up paying a premium but it is what it is lol
  14. Oh right that makes sense, especially now as I was looking into a mining motherboard and chassis haha.
  15. Im SSD/NVME only but use NAS/Surveillance HDD's for my important storage needs.
  16. Ohhhh nice. At somepoint I may use ex-crypto currency mining cards for folding as they are super cheap from China. They are just standard GPU,s without display ports and you can get modified drivers to get them working as a standard GPU.
  17. I may have to do it for my next main build....but it will be a while as I have no plans to rebuild right now.
  18. Speaking of water cooling, is it bad that I still want to get one of those beefy Case Labs cases ?
  19. The price is better for sure, but comparing against other phones in the same price bracket, I still think I would go for the other phones lol.
  20. What I would find interesting is a comparison on this next Crysis release between RT Core ray tracing and the Cryteks RT agnostic method. Without the use of dedicated hardware such as the RT cores there will be a performance hit to cards without RT Cores, would be interesting to see.
