  1. It was more of a reminder of something that has been on my mind towards the beginning of the year ahah, but it is good as I am not moving on it lol.
  2. Moved to OT. Remember chaps we have a classifieds section for this sort of stuff https://forums.extremehw.net/classifieds/ Looks like @Avacado has a few things for sale too.
  3. Hello all. Originally my plan was to keep EHW ad free for everyone as nobody really likes advertisements and I include myself in that category. However, with the recent massive increases in the cost of living in the UK, I am now considering bringing advertising to the site so that the site can start working towards being a self sustaining entity. After taking a long hard look at finances, it is clear that my monthly "Free" pool of money is decreasing. As I say, this is mostly due to the increase in the cost of living plus some personal factors that I cannot get into. As we all are aware, sites cost money to run on a monthly basis with the hosting, Security/CDN, Remote backups, SEO etc etc, this does not include development work to bring features to the community to make it a better place to be. I will in the coming weeks begin looking into advertisements, this will include your standard ads (Google) and hopefully some sponsor places ads. This was not the sort of move I wanted to make but for the site overall, it will be a beneficial move. It likely goes without saying that anyone who is a Premium Subscriber will not see the ads. Ads will only be viewable by standard members, or if you are logged out. More info to come. All the very best, E
  4. Did you not have HT enabled before then ? Possibly a CPU reseat is required.
  5. Thanks for the input thus far. Yes, I personally see one of the disadvantages of Unraid being the it doesn't have the advantage of Raid so far is disk striping etc which is a little concern as I would like to maintain best possible speeds where possible.
  6. Hey guys. So I am consolidating 3 machines into one server. 1x Plex Server/Windows VM 2x NAS I have done research on both solutions but struggling to decide which to settle with. The new server storage wise will have: 4x SATA HDD NAS/Enterprise drives 2x SATA SSD's (For Cache) 1x NVMe for OS or additional cache The server will serve as the NAS and will also be the Plex server, as well as need the function for me to run an instance of Windows in a VM. Originally my plan was to use TrueNas and run my HDD's in RAID 10, however I then started reading up on Unraid. Would love to hear opinions on which is "Better". I know they will both have Pros and cons. Flexibility to be able to have the server do other things in the future may be nice too, which I see Unraid has a nice library of plugins. Anyway, would love to hear some thoughts. Thanks, E
  7. Just read through this, great discussion :). When RAM doesn't work as expected...I feel the pain. Sometimes troubleshooting it is a right PITA.
  8. I would prefer to keep these names out of the pocket of larger entities just for the sake of keeping some independent studios. However there are there are times where the studios have lost direction, whether it be passion or financial etc and some good can come from those Studios being absorbed. Especially if said studio is responsible for a well loved series that for whatever reason has gone down hill over time, sometimes a fresh injection of cash, talent etc can revive studios/titles.
  9. An interesting concept. A little like ClockTuner but for RAM. I wonder how accurate it will be so far as REALLY getting you the best profiles, or if it will be one of those features that makes a half assed attempt lol. Time will tell.
  10. Thanks for the advice guys, I can confirm I purchased the below spec. I wanted all DIMM slots populated, but this was not possible with 4GB modules to get 64GB total. Actually that is a lie, I could have, but meant using slower 2133Mhz modules. However they had 8GB modules at 2400Mhz. So Alas my config is a total of 128GB lol. I will use of it for caching that is for sure. This machine will enable me to go from 3 machines to 1. But at a little bit of a cost :/.
  11. Thanks for your help bud, I agree with what you are saying, however it looks like I can only get 16 modules of the 4GB 2133Mhz, I guess I hesitate as it is the slowest of the bunch, I have no idea if have it in 8 Channel effective would offset the fact it is slower ram ?
  12. Edit*** So I have been bitten by the bug. Looking to get one of these to consolidate my NAS & Plex requirements into a single machine, plus any other services I feel like. I am looking at this configurator here: https://www.bargainhardware.co.uk/hp-z840-tower-a-configure-to-order Looks like I can get a good system . I have configured one as per the below 1 x HP Z840 (Grade A+) - Windows 10 Pro 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2696 V4 - 22-Core 44-Threads 2.20GHz (3.70GHz Boost, 55MB Cache, 150W TDP) 2 x HP Z840 Heatsink 1 x HP Z-Series 2nd CPU Fan 8 x 8GB - DDR4 2666MHz (PC4-21300, 2Rx8) - TBD 1 x 512GB - NVMe SSD - Major Brand 1 x HP Z Turbo Drive G2 - NVMe Adapter (New) 4 x HP Z Series LFF HDD Caddy 1 x HP Z840 1125W PSU However I am not great at RAM and the RANKS side of things. I am going to opt for 64GB as I do not see the benefit for my use case to go any higher. The RAM configuration options are below, what would be the best performance wise ? Also, What is the latest BIOS for this system that will not kill it ? I saw mentions of some hubbub with a BIOS bricking these units, for obvious reasons I do not want to go there haha. Thanks, E
  13. Honestly, you people have me looking into this for a FreeNAS project. SIGH. All your faults lol.
  14. Nice, Thanks. I was looking for a free solution as I was going to purchase ramdisk software from Romex (I use their PrimoCache Software)
  15. It is not impossible for their to be conflicts but this would usually only affect the reading of the sensor in Windows. Assuming fan speed is left to Auto, the VBIOS will handle it, meaning that it would bypass any potential software conflicts. Have you tried this GPU in another system/vanilla Windows installation ? If you have issues on Auto in a different rig or vanilla OS install, I could only assume a bugged VBIOS, or the VBIOS has a really poor fan curve setup.
  16. Out of interest, how large did you make the RAMDISK ? Wondering about doing the same. What software are you using ?
  17. It is my plan to have these on EHW, but in more realistic increments due to the fact that getting a million points these days is fairly easy and it would mean one would be inundated with badge requests lol. I also wanted to state that this new feature has now finished development, however I need to create some new artwork before I can do anything more haha.
  18. Nice! Is that your daily rig ?
  19. Closed. This one is a little on the fringe of political and I see little good coming from this conversation. Thanks, E
  20. Erm, no idea bud. This would be hard to diagnose until it was a fairly repeatable issue.
  21. Another possibility is to update the VBIOS, or swap out the VBIOS to another compatible one. ? Perhaps that is the issue. I know just how different fan profiles can be across different cards. But check to see if there was an actual VBIOS update your YOUR card first as one may have been released addressing a fan bug.
