I believe the usual answer is send the signal to the AVR first, and then out from the AVR to the TV. Coax / optical is capable of 5.1 channel. HDMI is capable of 7.1 / THX / Atmos if I remember correctly from when I was diving into this on my TV setup. I think @Fluxmaven might know a better answer though? He's been way more into home theater type stuff than I have been lately. If you're only doing 5.1 channels though, I think the easiest solution is likely just using the HDMI ARC capabilities. If you're after more than 5.1, I'd probably want to research a little more carefully before recommending something.

Neat results. Expected, but neat. It's amazing how quick and snappy those FX chips can still feel today honestly (and how SURPRISINGLY capable they are). They really do surprise you, even if the benchmark numbers show "bad" numbers.

Depends on what equipment you run it on. "How much electricity" depends on how many 4090's or 5090's you throw at it. Last year I ran it on my 7900XTX, 6900XT, 5700XT, and my Vega64 for the 96 hour event. My apartment was getting VERY hot and my AC was running nearly 24/7 during those 96 hours. I couldn't tell you how much electricity I was using. My bill went up probably 30-40 bucks or so that month I'd guess (at around $0.1099 / kwh) from where I'm normally at (in the $200 ish range, for scale). But my two bigger cards were drawing around 350w each, and the two non "bigger" cards were around 180w each (5700xt and vega). Nvidia cards do it probably a million times better and more efficiently though. I do it for fun on my AMD cards, because its what I have. You do NOT have to go crazy with multiple cards or systems. One CPU or GPU is all that's required (Nvidia preferred, AMD "works" / CPU's don't really help much these days anymore). What is the benefit? You're giving your resources to Stanford University while its running on your system, to help "fold proteins" to help find cures for incurable diseases such as Alzheimer's and others. Best way I can describe it "simply", you're providing your system to be used for AI purposes at Stanford for researching cures for diseases. You get free internet points on a made up scoreboard that doesn't count for anything. Except maybe a prize here at EHW.

Sounds like a solid build! I went with the Patriot Viper Venom 64GB DDR5-6400 CAS32 kit myself (which tightens up no problem to CAS 30 at 6400). CL @ 30 at 6400 speeds SEEMS to be a pretty good sweet spot, at least when I was looking about 2 months ago for RAM. If you think 32GB is enough for your needs, a lot of people like those Neo sticks. If you're after tweaking performance, I cannot speak as DDR5 is like greek to me still. If you're looking for EXPO and go settings, those are probably a solid bet for ease of installation and performance.

Really wasn't sure where to put this, as I don't think we've ever had too many people creating custom software on EHW. Well....I did it. I bashed my head against Grok and Copilot, and I learned how to code. To all you buttholes on this site that told me it wasn't possible, I DID IT!!!!! I finally figured out a way to share my one GPU across multiple VM's on my rack server. And I'm going to share with you guys my program that I made, to make this easier! I started off with "Easy-GPU-PV" script. It's not PERFECT, but for server duties that require a GPU, this program works GREAT. I then created a batch file that runs (with Grok / Copilot), that asks the user for some input, and customizes the Easy-GPU-PV scripts, AND automatically runs them for you. No need to learn scripting, I already did for you. Just run the "setup_vm.bat" included. The script files are all there in the /data/ folder, its an exact copy / paste of the original script from github. I own no rights to the scripting of Easy-GPU-PV. I only created the .bat file to automate this process. Note: ONLY WORKS ON WINDOWS 11 PRO / ENTERPRISE HOSTS Note 2: I wasn't sure on "version" type in the script. It calls for version "6" which I guess is "Professional", but I tend to use the IoT Enterprise installers too, which is version "2". That option in the installer batch MAY be confusing for people. Pro = Win10 / 11 "Professional" (consumer), and IoT = Win10 / 11 IoT Enterprise. I did NOT code anything in for home versions or any others. This script is CONFIRMED WORKING on an Intel Arc A770 on Windows 11 with a variety of VM clients, 3d working on all. REQUIREMENTS (that I know of): Windows 11 IoT Enterprise or Professional Host install Hyper-V fully enabled and working on the host Nvidia, Intel, or AMD GPU with drivers (that the script can copy to your VM's) Windows 10 / 11 Professional or IoT Enterprise VM install Dedicated RAM resources for the VM (cannot use dynamic RAM) Screenshots: Installing a new VM with a GPU: Updating a Virtual Machine's GPU driver (from the host): Easy GPU VM Share.zip

Well yeah, but its a modular 80+ Gold 750w. I can get a nice Cooler Master unit for $80 that's equally as good or arguably better since Cooler Master OEM's their own stuff, unlike Corsair. The Corsair unit is a good unit, don't get me wrong. I'm just upset that it was a forced buy just to get a card, and it was overpriced. The card was overpriced. But alas.....newegg "combo deals". -_-

Same here, but I blame Newegg and their "combo deals" moreso than AMD. There were MSRP cards available at launch, I just missed out on that 5 minute window. I didn't really want a $120 PSU. I needed a PSU, but I was eyeballing an $80 unit. -_-

My 10 year old has a Ryzen 2600x and Vega 64 playing at now 1440p / 165Hz. Honestly, the games kids his age seem to play, my kiddo probably would've been fine on something like a 3770k + RX 580 8GB (or GTX 1060 6GB). Yes, you can absolutely put something together cheap. Look for an older i7 with any board it'll run in, or go for some used Ryzen kit. Whatever GPU you can find, even something like a RX 480 or a GTX 1050Ti (or higher) is probably fine for graphics.

I tend to turn on FSR or similar features instead of dropping graphics settings. I do it for a good reason though, most of my gameplay I'm recording these days. So it doesn't matter if I lose a little fidelity with the resolution, youtube compression will ruin it anyway.

If I have time to, I have a stock 3200+ I can run. I don't think we currently have a hwbot team anymore though. They all left when the site was about to get shut down.
