  1. Can confirm I probably have the update (I install all updates blindly like a moron / since Windows won't let me avoid anyway).  Windows 11 Pro x64, fully up to date here.

Can also confirm, I've been having stuttering for a while now, since just after I tweaked and tuned my system.  I did updates too around the same time and the tuning showed all rock solid stable results.  I'm back to all stock now, and still stuttery.  Which was really weird for me because this new system was soooo buttery smooth when I first assembled and installed it, and also for a few days after I tweaked it.

Seriously debating on installing Linux at this point, but I REALLY don't want to deal with those headaches too. -_-

@LabRatFor some reason I cannot view that image you posted...  Also it's stable, it has texture streaming issues because I'm running the game on a HDD & the game notifies me saying low streaming bandwidth due to slow HDD.  If it was running on a SSD, it wouldn't have missing texture issues.

By the way Vega only allows undervolting, I couldn't get it to go above 1.200v, but it did report 1.244v at one time.

    Thanks.

Can confirm, I've seen similar artifacting on Forza Horizon 5 as well, loading off a HDD on an older system.  Those "artifacts" absolutely DO look suspicious, but if that's the only title doing it.....its likely not a problem, and I'd lean more towards the HDD being the culprit too.

Yeah I use connectify too but its nice to have the default windows hotspot, working.

I was NEVER able to get that feature functioning correctly myself.  My fixes were using "Connectify" with Windows, or to just swap my "router rig" over to Linux, because Linux has a hotspot feature that "just works".  I actually do plan on formatting and going to Kubuntu soon on my "router rig" soon, just don't want to risk the downtime anymore than I "have to", considering its literally my router for the whole network lol.

  4. Really too bad about that Gigabyte model, but I DID warn you about that didn't I? 😛

TPU Link for anyone that would like to see what was going on with his Gigabyte card:

    https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/gigabyte-has-fallen.320080/

TLDR:  BUY A GIGABYTE CARD IN 2024 AT YOUR OWN RISK (Labrat here isn't the only one reporting MAJOR problems with Gigabyte cards).

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Glad you've got the Sapphire Nitro+ model now, I get the feeling you're in for a GOOD time with that card! :wheee:

Now, let's see your benches.  You're probably the only person on EHW with one of these.

What about their legacy steam? Someone will probably find a hack or something. This instruction junk is not needed on a game launcher seem like someone paid them....

Is beam ng on epic store?

It's not JUST about BeamNG.drive, its about EVERY game I've bought and paid for on Steam, that I am no longer ALLOWED to play because Steam claims the CPU is too old falsely.  I literally have damages from this, and it sucks because there's not a lawyer around that'd probably touch this case.

I ran windows 8 on a pentium D am sure windows 11 too. What kind of game?

Steam itself will not launch on CPU's missing the CMPXCHG16b instruction set now.  This is NOT a requirement to play games I've purchased on Steam, but it is a requirement to launch the Steam client itself now.  Just tried on Socket 939 with Kubuntu last night.  The system itself was snappy and quick enough to daily drive even (as a dual core with DDR400).  But nope, can't install Steam even on Linux anymore.

I was actually planning on recording a BeamNG.drive session on the Socket 939 system soon, that's why I was prepping the system for Steam on Linux, since Windows 7 Steam doesn't install on anymore.  This is a system I've literally played the game on before just fine.

  7. Update:

Valve will no longer allow Steam to even be installed on older CPU's now, its not just a Windows 7 thing.  They are now actively blocking Steam installations on Linux on older machines too.  This actually is now directly effecting me, and youtube content I was preparing to make (playing games on old rigs).  Literally cannot play games, I've paid for, on hardware that's officially supported by the game now.

    Sale ends on March 21

A bunch of classic EA games just got added to Steam. I literally just bought Sim City 3K on GoG...

No thanks.  Can't play a lot of retro games on Windows 10 anyway, and Steam only works on Windows 10 and newer.  I'll stick to GoG copies.  You guys are more than welcome to be guinea pigs though.

Well boys, I got er' done.  I pulled that Vega 56 red dragon apart,  gave it a nice isopropyl alcohol bath & threw it on tin foil balls, threw it in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.  I have a proud announcement, it's working beautifully now.

  10. I still have no clue what I'm doing with mine.  🤣

So far, here's what I've done with my 7900x system:

    PBO enabled +200MHz
    Undervolted -0.90v
1.40v VDDQ / VDD (whatever the 2 RAM voltage settings are)
    1.25v SoC
    Scaler set to 8x
    RAM @ 64x multiplier (stock was 60x)
Timings set manually to XMP (slightly tighter now)

    2100 IF Clock
UCLK = MemClock enabled (I think I got the terminology right?)

No clue what any of these new ratios and stuff means you guys are talking about.  Don't know if I'm doing it right or not.  But the system's noticeably faster than my tuned 5800x system.

If one was to decide to step up into a 48GB kit for a 7900x later on, what ARE the proper tweaks to be doing on this platform?  Do you want fast RAM?  Shouldn't IF Clock be 1:1?  What is a UCLK?  Ugh, I was hoping this platform was going to be similar to AM4. -_-

Amusingly, I tried to 'min-max' too hard, the opposite direction.

Next F@H event @ eHW, I'll have at least 3 MI25/WX9100s going, and probably 3x AM4 Ryzens. (Also, how are OG GTX Titans @ folding, these days?)

It was merely 'timing' that I had the Vega 64 in, as I'd just re-TIM'd the card and been testing it (when @pioneerisloud twisted my arm to join 😁)

Testing stability on a bunch of "useless old cards" anyway.  Why not fold on them?  🤣

    So anyway..

My top 5 retro games/game series other than FF games:

    1. Armored core 2 on PS2

    2. Unreal Tournament 2003, 2004, UT3

    3. Tribes Ariel Assault on PS2

    4. Halo 1

    5. Battlefield 1942

What are your top 5 retro games?

There's so many to choose from, just 5?  Here's what I'd say mine would be, and this is in absolutely no particular order.

    1. Super Mario All-Stars (SNES)
On the list because there's 4 great games, sometimes 5 (depending on locality I believe?) included all on one cartridge.
    2. Rush 2: Extreme Racing (N64)
Who didn't love playing the Stunt track on this?  But even better yet, who didn't love bringing the arcade game Rush home on your N64 and CRT television set?  I even had Dolby surround sound for this game, it was great!
    3. Quake (Win9x)
I only ever had the demo for most of the time I played this, but I got REALLY really good at the first level at 320x240 resolution, software rendering, at like 10-15 FPS.
    4. SimCity 3000 (Win9x)
Creating amazing cities and then blowing them up?  Heck yes!
    5. Driver (Win9x)
First game I had stumbled upon that "simulated" a good burnout in a car.  The police chases weren't bad either.  Like GTA games later on (I played this long before GTA), never really played for the story.

Honorable Mention:  NFS Underground 2 (WinXP):  Do I really need to explain why?  🙂

Don't let these old farts rile you up over excessively defining "retro". Some of them were probably already halfway in the grave when pong came out 😜

Not everyone needs to have the same definition in their mind, we can all discuss retro gaming here, pc, console, or otherwise.

Would chess be a retro game?

Just a simple misunderstanding over words again.  Stuff happens.  I'm not worried about it, we're all friends here talking about our retro hobbies afterall. 🙂  To me, retro GAMING in general includes all of it.  Consoles, old PC's, Amiga's, Atari's, Commodores, whatever.  If its gaming, and old, its retro gaming.

To answer your question Ultra, I PERSONALLY would classify "Chess" (assuming board game version) as a "classic" game, not so much as "retro" or "vintage".  Kinda like Monopoly or Checkers or any other board game.  It's not really retro, since you can still buy new play sets today.  But its not exactly "modern" either since its a board game.  No?  Idk, just thinking aloud. 🙂

Pretty cool but as I made clear in the OP, this is primarily a retro console gaming club

You are more than welcome to add and discuss retro pcs here, and I've tried to be accommodating. However, if you want your own club, feel free to make one. I wish you both the best, and again, I really feel like I've been nice and open toward retro PCs, offering to add lists and such. I just can't add much to the discussion myself.

Unfortunately the user base here is small. Bear in mind, this is a continuation of my club on OCN which had 40+ members discussing retro gaming consoles. Clearly not happening here.

The above quote is all that I saw so far this morning (in the post from Labrat).  I didn't see the rest of your edit and post above his comment (I should've scrolled up).  I'm just going off what you said bro.  If you want it to be consoles only, we can absolutely discuss our retro PC's elsewhere.  If you want us included, that's great too, we'll stay right here.  No harm, no foul. 🙂

You have connections and are familiar w/ processes here, better than I.
I have no idea who I'd ask to fix this, as IIRC users can't edit posts (or titles) after awhile.

*shrugs, I usually just dm Enterprise for things like that lol.

Perhaps if this thread is only about consoles, maybe we should make a new EHW Retro club for the PC enthusiasts here.  🙂 I can go start on a thread if we need one.

    Being EHW, I just assumed it was Windows / Linux / OS/2 / DOS / Mac-PPC / Mac-x86_64 (/Etc.) "Gaming General" Retro Gaming. My apologies. 😅

Perhaps @pioneerisloud can help with a thread title change? At least, for the inattentive members like myself (and search results/The Algorithm😁

Something more clearly Console-Handheld/'non-PC'? Esp. now that handheld PCs are taking-off, and been around on/off since the 386-era.

Slightly different rules than OCN bro, I'm not moderator here lol.  I just do content creation, I don't have any special editing privileges here.

If we are wanting to keep the thread to consoles only, perhaps @neurotix should change the thread title though.  I don't have any consoles.

  17. I mean technically speaking, per the definition in the article, "Neural Processing Units are dedicated AI chips that remove some of the work from a computer's CPU or GPU so the device can work better.", that would mean any RX 6000 or 7000 series GPU can function as a NPU (same with any of Nvidia's RTX series cards).

Interesting, I guess we'll see what the future of NPU's will end up looking like soon enough.  Maybe one day, we'll be popping NPU's into our systems to assist with our GPU's.  Like I said, we kind of can NOW, its just people aren't well enough aware that you can run Nvidia and AMD together (or Intel too now).
